Subject: Is there an east coast US point of entry other than Ellis Island?
From: Eva Blanket <eva.b@bigpond.net.au> Date: Thurs. 25th May, 2006 Could anyone please advise how one can get details of persons entering the US after 1924, especially to New York, if they don't subscribe to Ancestry.com? Also is there any way of being able to get address and telephone numbers from US telephone directories for any time period in the 20th century(particularly the first half) on the net? Also, is there any overall registry of Jewish Cemetery records in the US one could access over the net? Thanks a lot. Regards, Eva BLANKET Sydney, AUSTRALIA Searching: HERMAN (Turka/Tuchol'ka(POLAND)/ Nizni Vorota(Verecky)/Israel/Australia) DAVIDOVITS (Szinever/Chust/USA/Australia) LIPSHITZ?LIFSHITS (Zhdeneve) WEISS (Talamas/Hukliva/Kosice/USA/Israel) NEUMAN/NEIMAN (Torun/USA/Israel) all originally Austro-Hungary then Czech. and today the Ukraine. Victims' Suitcases @ Auschwitz
#general
Sally Goodman <sbgoody@...>
This evening I watched the DVR of Elie Weisel and Oprah's visit to
Auschwitz. As they walked through the Museum, they stopped at the window of the suitcases and the name VESELY jumped out at me. I paused and forwarded, paused and rewound until I could see the name clearly. VESELY is a prominent collateral name in my family's history. How eerie this felt. Then I saw other suitcases with names. Again, I paused and forwarded and rewound until I could make out the names and information. I list them below as I was able to see them in case someone is interested: Petr EISLER #6446, born 20-111-1942, a child; Ruth Sara LAX; Fanni Sara KORNITZER, Wien; and LEVKOVIC Alex. Perhaps when someone visits Auschwitz, they could photograph the suitcases with names, if permitted, and post them. It really makes this so very personal. Sally Goodman Palm Springs/LA, CA

INTRO - Seek ENGLANDER m. STRAUSS from Presov > California
#usa
Madeleine J. English <madelanie5@...>
I am a new member of this list/community. My name is Madeleine J. English.
I live in Sacramento, California. I'm researching my paternal grandfather (PA), Jacob Paul ENGLANDER (abbreviated to ENGLISH upon arriving in the USA.) "Pa" was born 10 May 1863 Koshauer, Czechoslovakia. His parents were Philipp ENGLANDER and Helene STRAUS both of Presov, Czechoslovakia. "Pa" immigrated alone to the US in late 1876. He was "just" 13 years old. He lived briefly in New York and worked as a haberdasher. Within a couple of years, he started moving west and at some point, worked as a scout for the Arizona Rangers (in Texas). Later he worked as a ranch hand in San Luis Obispo, (SLO) California. Still later, he raised and raced thoroughbred trotters. It is most likely that he married his first wife (as far as we know) while in SLO California. All the information we have is that her name was "Daisy". IF there were children, they would have been girls since he doted on my father as his eldest son. In 1911, he married Elsie Betty NEHF. They had 3 sons: 1) - my father: Leonard Jack ENGLISH - 1912; 2) - Phillip Albert ENGLISH - 1916; 3) - Jack Paul ENGLISH - 1919. I am interested in locating any information about "Pa" prior 1911.Of particular interest would be any marriage(s)/child(ren) prior to his marriage to my grand- mother and information regarding his "scouting" with the Arizona Rangers. Thank you, Madeleine J. English Sacramento, California, USA madelanie5@sbcglobal.net OR madelanie5@gmail.com
