INTRO - researching FREUND family Berlin > NY 1892 #germany

Art and Marti <ajannery@...>

Hi GerSig,
I just joined the group. I have been doing genealogy research for about 39
years. I consider myself to be a novice, however, in doing German Jewish
genealogy research. I live in a small City in the State of Florida, USA.
My native language is English [American] and I also know French, and am
presently self-tutoring in both German and Swedish.
I consider my self as perhaps advanced in using a computer. My experience
in using the Internet is at least intermediate.

I have identified the names of my wife's grandfather and great grandfather
and great grandmother as well as the death date of my wife's grandfather.

My primary research goals is now to find out as much as I possibly can about
my wife's Jewish Grandfather, Eugen FREUND [Berlin,Germany ---->NYC abt. 1892]
[aka Eugene FRIEND]. His father was Epharim Heinrich FREUND and his
mother was probably Rose/Pauline LEWIN / LEVIN / LEVILLE.

I have read the City Directories of Berlin, as well as the Civil
Registration records for Berlin around 1870 and both have yielded some
information re Eugen’s birth/parentage, and siblings.

seeking MODEL/BERLIN family #belarus

asleuth@...

I am looking for any information on the MODEL and BERLIN families >from
Plock, Vitebsk, Belarus. The last contact >from them was in 1935, after
that time all letters sent to them were returned or went unanswered. There
is extended family all over the United States and South America as well as
in Israel who would like to find out what happened to the family. If there
are any surviving members of the family we would like to hear >from them.
There were some members of the family living in Riga, Latvia, one who was
living in Lithuania and immigrated to Uruguay, SA. There was one who became
an automotive engineer and was living somewhere in Russia in 1935.

If anyone has any idea of where I could find out what happened to the family
please contact me.

Where is Latacz #general

Cousins:

I am asking for this information for a cousin who is on sabbatical in
Europe. I spent hours yesterday researching the location of the shtetl
Latacz. I found one reference to Latacz in Suzan Wynne's book "Finding your
Jewish Roots in Galicia." According to that reference, it is in Zaleszcyki
district, and Uscieczko sub-district. No reference to it anywhere else. I
was hoping to find coordinates or a map reference on the web.

Your help is appreciated.

Germany Approves Release of ITS Records #germany

Sally Goodman <sbgoody@...>

Congratulations and thank you Gary Mokotoff and Peter Lande and all those
who have fought long and hard to convince the International Tracing Service
(ITS) to open their record collection for copying to the eleven countries
that make up the ITS committee. For more information:

http://www.avotaynu.com/nu/v07n05.htm

"The holdings of the International Tracing Service are one of the most
valuable sources of information about the fate of people, both victims and
survivors, caught up in the Holocaust. Their records place an individual at
a specific place and time during the Holocaust period. They claim to have 40
million such pieces of information. Their sources, to name a few, are
deportation lists, concentration camp death lists, ghetto records and
post-war refugee records."

We have waited for this for a long time and we are grateful to everyone for
making this happen.

SCHILDKNECHT & HANSEN (1790s?), SCHILDKNECHT (b.1817) & BAHR / BEHR / BAER #germany

C <beachwatergirl@...>

Dear cousins,
Please contact me privately if you have any information regarding the following
surnames:

Christian Heinrich SCHILDKNECHT (Schleswig-Holstein) married Catharina Margaretha
HANSEN (b. 1780s-90s?) and had more than one son, but the one for whom I am
searching is Joachim Friedrich Wilhelm SCHILDKNECHT (b. 1817, Johannisdorf or
Marienthal, Schleswig-Holstein; d. ?).

He married Katherina Magdalena BAHR [BEHR, BAER, BEIER on different documents]
(b.?, d. ?) and had at least 2 sons, Carl and Gustav, in Germany.
Upon emigrating into the US in 1854, Joachim apparently chose to use the name of
Fred or William.

This SCHILDKNECHT clan landed in New York and traveled to Neu Holstein, WI, where
they engaged in the manufacture of Potash. Fon du Lac, WI, became the next family
home, and it was >from this home that the two elder sons, Carl and Gustav, went in
search of their own fortunes. In Milwaukee and Chicago, they learned cigar
manufacturing before moving to Mankato, Minn.

Carl Freidrich SCHILDKNECHT (b. 9/9/1842, Marienthal,
Schleswig-Holstein - also referred to as Luebeck,
Germany; d. 8/20/1941, Seattle, WA, according to a Mankato obituary).

Thanks so much! Have a great Pesach & Kul Tov...

WERTHEIM, PLAUT - Lost Message #germany

E Roth <tooter.ted@...>

This morning I was delighted to receive a note >from a possible
WERTHEIM cousin with connections to David PLAUT. Unfortunately, as I
was working with an unfamiliar keyboard, I hit something and the
message was erased before I could fully check the info or reply. I
have tried everything to get the message back, but it is definitely
gone. This has never happened before, and I would request the person
who wrote to write again. We definitely have information to share.
Apologies to the group for this bit of carelessness.
