DP camps in Germany and Italy #general

Avigdor&Laia <lbendov@...>

Many Jews were given a temp refuge in a DP camp after the War.
1) I am trying to find information about a camp called Shlachtensee in the
US Zone near Kassel Germany. My spelling must be way off as I can't find
anything on the Internet for this.
2) Was there a camp called Kruglasko in Italy for refugees trying to get
into the Jewish Homeland?

Names change >from one language to another and I have tried alternate
spellings and referred to maps to no avail. If someone can give me answers
or sources, I'd deeply appreciate it.

Festov pogrom 1921 #general

Dr. Trevor Waner

I am looking for information and background to a pogrom that took place in
Festov in 1921. I think that Festov may be near Kiev, as a family member
was taken there after the pogrom to a hospital where he died.

Re: Looking for Relatives of Philip BENJAMIN, New York Alderman 1880 to ca 1904 and his wife maria #general

Dick Jaeger <richard@...>

Phillip BENJAMIN and Maria ISAACS (my 2nd great grandparents) were married
in 1857 and had nine children Benjamin P. (my great grandfather) who married
Amelia LEVY and had three children including Jacob who married Gladys
Fauerbach and were my grandparents, Hettie (married name may have been RICH)
and Phillip born in 1889. Phillip lived to 1915, Benjamin later in 1915 and
Jacob died late in 1914 (Gladys remarried in 1916 and her first marriage was
kept secret >from the grandchildren until both Marion and Betty, Jacob and
Gladys' children had died and a birth certificate was found for Betty and
marriage record for Jacob and Gladys was obtained >from 1911. Marion was my
mother and the older of the two children born in 1912. I knew Aunt Hettie,
as a relative of my grandmother's but not what relationship and certainly
not sister-in-law. I have traced the Phillip's family back to Nathan and
Catherine Benjamin (Phillip's grandfather in London amd Ann Cohen is
grandmother in London as well as Maria's family back to 1550) All of
Phillip's children attended his and Maria's 50th wedding anniversary in 1907
according to an article in the NY Times. Other children of Phillip and Maria
were David, Harry, Max, Julia, Robert, Rosa, Lazarus, and Louis.
Any help in identifying additional family members would be appreciated.
All were born in New York.
Thanks Dick Jaeger

As Stan Rose knows, I am also >from Stoke Newington and went to the same
school. What he probably does not know is that the lady he mentions, who
was also evacuated >from the same school was a neighbour of mine and we were
friends >from the age of around five. We met up again through Friends
Reunited and I am still in contact with her, in fact we were emailing each
other last week.
If he does get in touch with her he should be sure and tell her that he and
I are not related. She might think we are, because she also knows my
brothers and my family name is Rose.

were there (first in Llandudno then Rhyl) for a whole year. It wasn't a
happy experience - for me, at any rate (whether that because we were
considered intruders and not welcome or because we were Jewish, I don't
know). >

==Llandudno at the time had a respectably sized Jewish community. The north
Wales littoral had many Jewish (and kosher) hotels, and the major seaside
towns had year-round communities.

==There was a Hachshara (agricultural training farm for Palestine) near St.
Asaph, near Rhyl that was run by the Orthodox (mostly German refugee) Hapo`el
Hamizrachi movement. A couple who left the Hachshara set up, in Rutland, the
only kosher ice cream parlor outside London.

==In 2001, just before the IAJGS conference in London, I contacted the
school of the village where I and seven other Jewish children >from Gateshead (all
German refugees) had been evacuated. I was invited to speak to the
nine-year-olds about my experience. They, and their teachers (brought up in an EU
world) were surprised to hear that the Germans were killing Jews. I asked the
children to thank their grandparents for their hospitality to us.

== The teachers prepared for me photocopies of the school ledger pages that
described the preparations for accepting the evacuees (there were some 30-60
non-Jewish children >from the same public school in Gateshead). Curiously,
there was no mention in the ledger that war actually started at some point. I
also got a copy of the page where all the Jewish children in the CofE
parochial school were listed with their hosts. One of the teachers >from the Gateshead
school was Miss Levine (Jewish, of course, sister of Jack Levine of
Newcastle on Tyne (Jesmond), and she was accompanied by her sister. My sister was in
Miss Levine's class, and the parents of the other Jewish children arranged
for them to be sent with Miss Levine's class.

==Incidentally, I remember being asked by my hosts, retired schoolteacher
Mr. Parry and his wife, to listen in with them on the Sunday afternoon
(September 3, 1939) to a BBC address by Chief Rabbi Hertz who was telling school
authorities and foster parents what accommodations would be helpful for Jewish
children. I recall especially that he said not to serve shellfish to Jewish
kids--a big surprise to me because in Germany we had eaten Schelfisch almost
every week--German for, I believe, whiting.

I am grateful to Nadia Woolf for telling us about the website for former
WW2 evacuees. I browsed through the lengthy list of persons seeking
contacts and came across a coincidence.

The entry was >from a lady who was evacuated >from the same school in Stoke
Newington, North London, as my sister and me, in September 1939, but who
was sent to a different location. She was later moved to the village in
Buckinghamshire where my wife and I have been living for the past twenty
years.

She has been trying to locate the family here with whom she had lived, but
without success. I hope to gather some info. for her in the morning.

Immigration records to the UK #unitedkingdom

Dayna <zoeys_mom@...>

I have had much luck searching the Ellis Island online
database for relatives that came to America. I've even
found many original European surnames this way that I
never thought were possible to find.

I have one set of relatives that immigrated to the UK,
most likely around 1893-1897, and would love to be
able to find them on a ship manifest and hopefully
determine their original surname (it was GLASSMAN in
England, which does not sound Russian at all). Both of
their daughters who immigrated to the US did so under
their married surnames, so their travel records were
no help in finding the original surname.

Is there any *online* database of arrivals in UK ports
with ship manifests that can be viewed?
