Was author Eric Hoffer Jewish?

Eric Hoffer (1902-1983),who wrote The True Believer, may have been of
German Jewish origin (Wikipedia proposes this) but is also mentioned in other sources as "non-Jewish". Britannica does not comment. Does anyone on JewishGen know whether he had Jewish parentage or ancestry? Thanks. Ari Dale (Israel). MODERATOR NOTE: Please reply privately.

Sassoon and Letchworth

Hazel Dakers
Mentioning the recent discussion of Letchworth and the Sassoons to a friend
of mine, triggered a member of the Sassoon family to tell my friend this: "Rabbi Soloman's grandmother Flora and parents David and Selina moved in court circles, entertaining and being entertained by Royalty - all the while maintaining their strictly kosher household. (Apparently Queen Alexandra who favoured long strings of pearls was slightly irritated by the fact that Flora's necklaces contained more and larger pearls). The family lived in Bruton St and only moved to Letchworth after their London house was bombed during the 2nd World war. Rabbi Soloman bought two adjacent houses in Letchworth (to be as far away as possible >from any likely bombing) and had them converted into one; but even then the family found the accommodation small for the type of entertaining they were used to. The drawing room was extended until it occupied most of the garden and a dining room was created by knocking down walls of inteconnecting rooms. The latter resulted in an L shaped room where those sitting at one end could not see the people sitting down to dinner at the other end. The house was always full of visitors and there were rarely less than 20 sitting down to the meals." Transnistria deportation list from Dorohoi
#romania
Monica Talmor
Thank you to all the volunteers who made it possible for this list to now be
available to the public. I want to point out, however, that is it only a fraction of the total number of deportees, even if one takes into account the un-named persons. It is my understanding that about 15,000 people were sent to Transnistria >from Dorohoi, with only about half of then returning alive. This list is about 3200 persons. Several of my husband's family members were deported, but I didn't find a single one of them listed here. So just because you don't find someone in this list, it doesn't mean they weren't deported. Hi all,
I recently found a record for my grandfather, Uriel ABRAMOV, on the JOWBR database http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/cemetery/ He was buried in the Chevra Kadisha cemetary in Johannesburg. I was wondering if the person who compiled the information for the Chevra Kadisha cemetary also took digital photos of the tombstones, and if so, how to go about getting a copy. Best regards, Assaf Urieli Toulouse, France Researching: RABINOVITCH: Mariampol (Marijampole, Lithuania), Taragin/Torigin (Tauragnai, Lithuania) JAFFE/YAFFE: Prague (Praha, Czech Republic), Karelichy (Belarus), Turets (Belarus) MEVSOS: Mariampol (Marijampole, Lithuania) YOSELOVITCH: Shavl (Siauliai, Lithuania), Mazheik (Mazeikiai, Lithuania), Germany SCHUTZ or SCHULTZ: Shavl (Siauliai, Lithuania), South Africa ABRAMOV: Ange/Anje (Dagestan), Petah Tikva (Israel), Johannesburg (South Africa) SVATITSKY: Pinsk (Belarus), Petah Tikva (Israel)

Lipsa Fleishman

Jon Seligman
Hello all,
I am looking for information concerning my great-grandmother. Unfortunately we have almost no details. Her name was Lipsa Fleishman. She was born in 1864, probably in Lithuanian Russia, and died in Johannesburg in South Africa in 1934. She married Aaron Lederman of Shadova (Seduva) in Lithuania. They have six children, five born in Shadova, before their emigration to South Africa around 1905, and the last in South Africa. Lipsa’s fathers name was Issac. We do not know in which town she was born. I have failed to trace a Fleishman family in Shadova till now. If any of this rings a bell please contact me privately. Jon Seligman Zur Hadassa, Israel. researching: SELIGMAN / ZELIKMAN in Slobodka; LEDERMAN in Seduva; FLEISHMAN; JOFFE / SCHWARTZMAN/YACHAD in Kraslava; GILLIS in Kretinga; SANDMAN in Koenigsberg, Newcastle; all the above in South Africa.
