Jewish Genealogy Conference Update and Early-Bird Registration ends May 15 #galicia

Roni S. Liebowitz

The clock is ticking. Only a couple of days left to receive the early
registration rate for the 26th IAJGS International Conference on Jewish
Genealogy to be held August 13-18, 2006 at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New
York City. Early registrations must be made (or postmarked) on or before
May 15. No time to fill in the complete on-line registration form now? No
problem. You can respond to the basic questions to save a spot and up-date
your registration when you have more time to think about your ancestral name
tag, select the special events you want to attend, etc. Go to
http://www.jgsny2006.org. On the menu bar, click Registration. Read that
introduction and then proceed to register.
Questions? Check out the Frequently Asked Questions which also has a link on
the menu bar.

This year, for the first time, the host society is sponsoring its own
special experiential, evocative, and educational exhibit. You'll see it,
learn >from it, and even be part of it.

Another first at the conference, is our own version of the "Antiques Road
Show," where experts help identify the Jewish treasures you bring to them.
"The Jewish Chochka and Ephemera Road Show" -- will be held Friday, August
19th. Remember to check the attics, closets, and basements and learn more
about those items and photos you've saved through generations or just
acquired. Find out where and when they originated. Perhaps your chochka
is a recognized treasure of more than sentimental value.

The "meat and potatoes" of the conference includes more than 250 sessions,
SIG luncheons, Birds-of-a-Feather meetings, cemetery visits, computer
workshops, tours to Ellis Island and the Lower East Side, a gala banquet,
videos, resource room, repository fair, vendor room, musical entertainment,
and more.

You still have some time. Go to the website and get that special rate. We
really look forward to seeing all of you in New York this summer.

I have recently received data about my JEIDEL family including this entry:
Auguste JEIDEL born 23.4.1844 married Samuel BAMBERGER teacher of religion
and Rabbi in Bad Kreuznach.

I have tried JGFF family finder with no success, and wondered whether this
Rabbi BAMBERGER appeared on anyone's tree?

Writing on a matzeiva #rabbinic

Shoshana L. Boublil

Last week, a worker at Har Hamenuchot told us of a kever with our
family name that was neglected -- he didn't recall seeing anyone
visit it in over 20 years.

As our family name is unique, we went over to see the kever and
found an unknown member of the family:

Rav Menachem Mendel ben Rav Yisrael Skaist (we still don't know who
he was; he died in 1960).

The matzeiva also states that he "Hirbitz Torah BaRabim" and then
they have the following sentence:

"Shiyef v'eal, shiyef venafak"

A friend told us that this is probably from:

"Shiyef v'eal, shiyef venafak, velo machzik tivusa lenafshei.

Sanhedrin 88b:

"Eizehu ben ha'olam haba, invesan, ushefal berech, shiyef v'eal,
shiyef venafak, velo machzik tivusa lenafshei"

Rashi: he bends over as he comes in and as he goes out."

Why would this be inscribed on a kever? Does the usage give a hint
to the place this man came from?

Thank you.
