Nishgeshevet - is this a Galizien town? #galicia

Charlotte Steinzig <adazig@...>

When I asked where my husband's grandmother was from
(in Galicia/Austria, to US in about 1895), my
mother-in-law said what sounded like "nishgeshevet."
This was the first time my MOL indicated any knowledge
of this information. I could not find any town
similarly named. One day it occurred to me my MOL
might simply have been saying something like "no such
place" or basically giving me the run-around, as she
does not like any aspect of discussing genealogy. Any
thing here sound like a place or the latter. Thanks.

Genealogy As an Academic Discipline

Daniel Wagner, Professor of Materials Science at

Professor Wagner notes that "The Book of Genesis

This site evaluates historical knowledge
as it relates to ancient and modern genealogies.
Information gleaned >from social contexts,
both secular and religious, are reviewed,
using modern genealogical research specialist
standards: to properly reconstruct and correctly
portray real historical lives and family pedigrees.
Cultural, religious and family tradition, (their
stated facts and viewpoints), are surveyed within
given ancient contexts of primary and secondary
record sources, as handed down for the benefit
of our modern generation. Modern claims of
genealogical attachment to biblical records
are noted, with remarks.

List of Auschwitz Prisoners from May 1, 1944 #general

Fritz Neubauer

Dear Genners,

While looking for another book I saw on the shelves a book on the
persecution of Jews in Germany between 1933-1945 with the title

"Kennzeichen J: Bilder, Dokumente, Berichte zur Geschichte der
Verbrechen des Hitlerfaschismus an den deutschen Juden 1933-1945" (Mark
J: Pictures, Documents and Reports on the History of the Crimes of
Hitler Fascism on the German Jews 1933-1945), edited by Helmut Eschwege.
Published by Roederberg-Verlag in Frankfurt/Main in 1979. This volume
seems to be a reprint of the book that was originally published in East
Germany by the VEB Deutsche Verlag der Wissenschaften in 1966.

On page 273 it contains a facsimile of a list of Auschwitz prisoners who
were sent back >from Auschwitz-Monowitz to Auschwitz-Birkenau on May 1,
1944 because the were no longer able to work there ("arbeitsunfaehig")
which must have amounted to a death sentence. This list may therefore be
their last sign of life, but shows that they were alife at that date.

Number on the List, Prisoner Number, Surname, Given Name, Nationality,

1. 86763, SCHLOSSER, Erich, Dt. Jude
2. 99075, WEINBERG, Hersch, Staatl. Jude
3. 102491, CYSMANN, Sepsel, Staatl. Jude
4. 106936, HOFFMANN, Richard, Dt. Jude
5. 106977, KRZUK, Ali, Staatl. Jude
6.,107111, STERNBERG, Siegfried, Dt. Jude
7.,107963, UCKO, Erich, Deutsch. Jude
8.,197963, STEIN, Egon, Deutsch. Jude
9.,115035, FAIS (?), Mois, Griech. Jude, Entry deleted
10.,115900, ARAMA, Isaak, Griech. Jude
11.,116079, LEWI, Robert, Griech. Jude
12.,116123, MALALEL, Salomon, Griech. Jude
13.,116156, NACHMANN, Leo, Griech. Jude
14.,116246, SAMSON (?), Mosche, Griech. Jude
15.,116650, TORRES, Juda, Griech. Jude
16.,116983, LIEBMANN, Ludwig, Deutsch. Jude, Entry deleted
17.,117636, MAIBRUCH, Isak, Deutsch. Jude
18.,117706, STEPPEL, Bernhard, Belgien Jude
19.,124070, CHEJNACKI, Chaim, Staatl. Jude, Entry deleted
20.,126677, BUCHHALTER, Moschak, Staatl. Jude
21.,128042, GOLDBERG, Josef, Staatl. Jude
22.,128282, ZUNKIELROJT (?), Josef, Staatl. Jude
23.,133291, GUDANSKI, Mordka, Staatl. Jude
24.,133751, WILDER, Simcha, Staatl. Jude
25.,139722, BOUVMANN, Abraham, Holland Jude
26.,139771, KLEIN, Philipp, Holland Jude
27.,142346, FRANKOS, Salama, Staatl. Jude
28.,143797, UNGAR, Israel, Staatl. Jude
29.,143984, CYKERT, Jakob Isr., Staatl. Jude
30.,144000, FRAJDENREICH, Mendel, Staatl. Jude
31. 144183, ABOWICZ, Josef, Staatl. Jude
32. 144285, KIRSCHBAUM, Wolf, Staatl. Jude
33. 150708, VAN DE HAAR (?), Abraham, Holland Jude, Entry deleted
34. 151922, VAN GELDEREN, Louis, Holland Jude
35. 151928, GOBETZ, Jakob, Holland Jude
36. 151959, KOOL, Israel, Holland Jude

The data consists of the prisoner number, surname, first name followed
by nationality and "Jude" for all of them. The nationalities are German,
Greek, Belgian, and Dutch, most of them are described of being
"stateless" (staatenlos), their number is surprisingly high - possibly
because Polish prisoners were not recognized as being Polish any more?

The list with the title "Ueberstellungsliste nach Birkenau" (List for
Removal to Birkenau) consists of 36 names, four of which are taken off
after typing and deleted with a line through, this line makes some of
the letters difficult to read (marked by interrogation marks). The list
is cut off for this publication after number 36 but one can see that it
was longer. It is not indicated where the original is, it would be
interesting to know where it is now, possibly in the Auschwitz museum.

As far as I could ascertain, none of these names appear in the data
bases of Yad Vashem or JewishGen, information about Louis VAN GELDEREN's
wife is requested on one of JewishGen's data bases, but the email address
does not work any more.

from what I can see, this book was republished in West Germany at the
height of the Cold war, apparently to show, how some West German
enterprises were implicated in using forced labor at the time.

Further information and an Excel file is available.

Russian army musicians #ukraine

My grandfather, Simcha Zalman Schaefer, of Kiev was a drummer in the
Russian army. According to family stories, he actually liked being in
the army, which makes me think that musicians were treated differently
from regular soldiers. Does anyone have any information or family

Searching: Darryl Herman (David) VANGROFF (VAN GROFF) - California #general

Stanley Diamond

Dear friends,

I am trying to help a family find their long-lost nephew and cousin.

His name is Darryl Herman (David) VANGROFF (VAN GROFF)
Born in 1951 in Redwood City, CA

He was orphaned at a young age (in the U.S.) and moved to B'Nai Braq, Israel
in the early 1960s; by 1965 was living on a kibbutz.

He had returned to California in the 1980s but his family lost contact
with him after that.

Please contact me if you know anything about this man.

Thank you,
