BONDI out of Italy
#general
Paul King <samorai@...>
On 19 April Michael Bernet asks: "Information on Italian Jewish Bondis,
anyone?" I can give the tiniest of windows on Bohemia. In "The family Bondi and their ancestors. Assembled and edited by Reiner J. Auman. 1966", the following claim is made: "Among families of Italian origin who entered Bohemia in the early 17th c. are Bondi, Bassevi (Basch), Luck, Wehli (Wahli are 'the Italians' in Slavic), and Aschkenazi." The very sparse amount of oral family history for my Koenig family makes a claim for Italian origins and the genealogical research I have made over the past 5 years has for the most part upheld the credibility of the oral history (all >from one family source). This family appears to have associated in its early Bohemian history with Basch and much later with Bondy. There was 17th c. trade across the Alps >from the north Italian towns and it is possible that Bondys arrived in Vienna and vicinity. Don't know if there are any references to Bondy in David Kaufmann, Die Letze Vertrebung de Juden aus Wien und Nieder?sterreich, 1625-1670, Budapest, G. Athenaeum, which deals with 1670 expulsion. Worth a peek. The Bohemian nobles snapped up Jews to run their proto-industrial plants following the Thirty Years War (1618-1648) and >from the plethora of Bondys (also Bonda?) >from the Familianten lists of 1724, it is possible that some came out of Italy. Crumbs, but maybe others can add. Paul King Jerusalem

A marriage document for two people with childen born twenty years before

Rose Feldman <rosef@...>
Has this happend to anyone else? Two days ago, I received a marriage
registration >from 1874 in Warsaw. It states that the groom is 60, as is the bride and that they have children born in 1853 and 1857. I am assuming that is the formal state registration of their marriage (which actually took place somewhere before 1837, because I have another document for the birth of a daughter in 1838). Do try variations Treper-Trepman-Treperman
#poland
Rose Feldman <rosef@...>
Luckily my mother-in-law had marked on a document or two, Treper-Trepman.
This enabled us to collect documents indexed on JRI-Poland for the two names and see that the names were used inter-changeably (is there such a word) in the 19th century. Last month I took a chance and ordered a document for a Treperman. I thought, if they used both Treper and Trepman, maybe one used Treperman. The document arrived and after a sketchy translation, I found that Gersa Treperman was born about 1814 in Warsaw and his mother's name was Sprincza daughter of Layzer. This matched the year of birth (it can't be a coincidence) of Hersz Trepman (Also between Russian and Polish Gersa can be Hersz) born in Warsaw in 1814, whose father is Kielman, and I know >from another document Kielman's wife is Szprinca. I now have 3 definite children for my husband's ggggrandfather, which means 3 different branches. JGS - Hamilton (Ontario, Canada) & Area - Wed, April 26 Meeting
#ukraine
Ina Levitt-Yanover
Offered by
Jewish Genealogical Society- Hamilton & Area Wednesday, April 26, 2006 7:30 PM to 10:00 PM Location: Temple Anshe Sholom 215 Cline Avenue North, Hamilton, ON Every week, people around the world suddenly discover their Jewish roots. Peter Jassem's lecture will reveal the reasons for the involuntary loss of Jewish identity after the war and provide examples of reconnecting to Jewish roots, and the psychological and practical consequences thereof. Examples, including Peter's own experiences, will illustrate the methods used to trace one's Jewish roots and how their discovery evolved. Peter's presentation will also encompass ways of searching for lost relatives, whether Holocaust survivors or their descendants living under an assumed or imposed false identity. Raised as a Christian, Peter Jassem suspected that his roots were Jewish for some time and was able to confirm this in 1995. During the following 18 months he located 1500 names of Jewish ancestors or relatives. He became an active board member of the JGS of Canada (Toronto) and is now on the board of JRI-Poland, Gesher Galicia and the Canadian Foundation for Polish Studies. Since 2002 he has served as president of the Polish-Jewish Heritage Foundation of Canada. He has written articles for genealogical newsletters, lectured on genealogy and participated in various projects. He was the program chair of the 22nd IAJGS International Conference on Jewish Genealogy, Toronto, 2002. Please join us for this presentation Discovering Jewish Roots of People raised as Non-Jews. There is apparently a connection between the family and Rabbi Yomtov Lippman Heller (1579-1654) who became Chief Rabbi of Bohemia. I discovered in my researches that he was born in Wallerstein in Franconia in Southern Germany, which is where my family came from. My family didn't arrive in Wallerstein till about 1700. Salomon BORG {Triesch} marries Magdalena SINGER, 1857
#austria-czech
Celia Male <celiamale@...>
If you are related to Salmon BORG >from Triesch/Trest
[Trieschet] in Moravia or Magdalena SINGER, daughter of H.H SINGER, a resident of Vienna, you would be very interested in a document being auctioned on a well-known auction site on 23 April 19.00 BST [source Austria, probably Vienna]. The document is signed and sealed in Triesch - 16 June 1857 by the local rabbi of Triesch, Joseph FRANKFURTER. The letter is addressed to Isaak Noah MANNHEIMER of Vienna - to read about the famous MANNHEIMER, Jewish preacher; born at Copenhagen Oct. 17, 1793; died at Vienna March 17, 1865 see http://tinyurl.com/kexp7 One day I want to get to the source of this pile of "permissions to marry" which appear on the auction site - where could they have come from? We can speculate that they were perhaps stored at the IKG .... and then? Once again thanks to Sigger Eric Elias for alerting me to this item. I have located this grave in Vienna which appears to match the young couple above: Zentralfriedhof Gate 1 5b 13 36 BORG Salomon age 75 - 11.10.1901 13.10.1901 BORG Marie age 74 - 15.08.1910 17.08.1910 SINGER Regine age 73 - 08.02.1885 BORG Leopold - 03.01.1919 05.01.1919 Nb Regine must be the mother of Marie so possibly we have a grave here with early links to Moravia. Possible but doubtful {found in the same grave, using a reverse search with grave no only] LOW [umlaut] Eduard age 73 - 15.10.1917 18.10.1937 LOW [umlaut] Henriette age 59 26.07.1904 I am not sure if the LOW couple is really buried in the grave with BORG and SINGER - it is most probably a computer error as group 5b is very complex and these discrepancies frequently appear on the database with a reverse search. Group 5b is segmented into various areas - and the graves and their occupants in these areas cannot readily be distinguished and identified by a computer search. Celia Male [U.K.] Footnote: 1. The direct url to this auction site is not given because of prevailing Jewishgen rules. I will be happy to send it to you, if you are interested. There is hardly anytime to spare though. 2. I would like to contact Mark Tritsch who appears on a *Triesch* search in the archives. Please has anyone got his correct email address?
