You may be reading the name of the place incorrectly: try Ekatrinislav.

Or:

Kuropatwa-Goldstein Ellis Island entry? 1904-1905 #general

engshapes@...

I have researched my grandfathers name for 5 years now, and even with Steve
Morse's site I can come up with nothing.

Joseph(Jusk Gersk) Goldstein and Rachel (Rochel Gebel) Goldstein arrived in
NY about 1904-1905. Probably with his brother Jacob (Ick Jankiel), wife Etka,
and sister Sophia.(Szifra). My family only remembers them saying something
about arriving at Castle gardens. Since that facility was closed many years
earlier, why would that comment have been made? When I search Ellis Island
site I come up with blanks. When they left Zambrow Poland, I do not know what
port they embarked from. In addition, Since their name was Kuropatwa, and
not Goldstein, I cannot figure out how it got changed or why. We had no
relatives in the USA with that name. Can anyone help!!!

BAYLIS #romania

TheGoodLifeToo@...

My great-grandmother's maiden name was Baylis. We have little information
about her. Her father was Shabsie Isidore Baylis and her mother Rose
HIRSHMAN. Her name was Sussel which became Sophie in the USA. She was born in 1848,
probably in the area of Soroka, Bessarabia, Russia and arrived in the USA
with some of her children in 1903. At least one child preceded her and others
came after. Her children's names were Pina, Beila, Rivka, Menasha, Feiga,
Frieda and Hina. She was married to Shlomo SALTZMAN (or SALT or ZOLT).

If anyone is familiar with this family and can add to the information I have
I would greatly appreciate it.

New items on Steve Morse's One-Step Website #lithuania

Diane Jacobs <thegenie@...>

I see that Steve Morse has added several new foreign-alphabet tools to
his one-step website. These are in the "Dealing with Characters in
Foreign Alphabets" section.

The new tools include translating (real translations, not
transliterations) words >from Hebrew to English and vice versa,
transliterating between English and Greek in both directions, and a
virtual keyboard that lets you type any character in any Latin-based
alphabet (example, the slashed L in Polish).

The one-step website is at http://stevemorse.org Please direct any
questions to Steve rather than to me. Steve's address is at the top of
each page of his website.

Bydgoszczy/Bromberg 1923 address directory #poland

Logan J. Kleinwaks

A 1923 address directory for the city of Bydgoszczy/Bromberg is available
online >from the Kujawsko-Pomorska Digital Library at
http://kpbc.umk.pl/dlibra/docmetadata?id=12004. This directory is easily
manually searchable, as it contains both a section alphabetized by
surname/given name, beginning on image 382, and a section alphabetized by
street name, beginning on image 104.

To view the directory, follow the above link and click on "Content" on the
left, under "Publication." Either the directory will open or you will be
prompted to download a DjVu plugin for your web browser. If you have
already installed the plugin, click on "Browse publication" to open the
