Re: Belchatow Films at the LDS #lodz #poland

Roni S. Liebowitz

The Cyrillic indices in the LDS Belchatow's microfilms were indexed by
volunteers prior to the creation of Shtetl CO-OPs. Some other towns have
produced or are now creating finding aids for films containing records for
their towns. Indexing of Belchatow films was completed before this began.
However there is a webpage on JRI-Poland that is helpful to review before
researching family in the Belchatow films. See:
http://www.jewishgen.org/jri-pl/town/belchatow_txt.htm Indexing is complete
for the Belchatow films listed here in this early "inventory." Many CO-OP
groups later also indexed more of the data by reviewing the actual records
themselves, adding to what exists in ledgers' indices created by the Polish
scribes. Belchatow has slowly been doing this for some of the films.

However, it would be very helpful for researchers to have a finding aid for
each of the Belchatow films. As many of you know, I am registration chair
of the International IAJGS Jewish Genealogy Conference and cannot be
involved with this now. However, having this finding aid for Belchatow
films is a wonderful idea and not very difficult to do. If you are
interested in volunteering to create an inventory for a particular
Bellchatow film or films, please contact me and I will send you a sample of
what was done for another town. Once a finding aid is complete, we can link
it to the results page.

If your interest is Belchatow, please also see updated Belchatow Yizkor Book
translations and the Belchatow ShtetLink web pages listed under my
signature. If you plan to attend the conference, please let me know since
we will be having a Belchatow Birds-of-a-Feather meeting. LARG (Lodz Area
Research Group) members will be notified within the next 2 months about a
LARG meeting to be held at the Conference.

must scroll past the parish records to find the grouping of Jewish records.
I was able to identify these as Jewish by the names of the witnesses which I

With the help of the index obtained >from searching JRI-Poland I was able to
find most of the SADOWSKI records. However there was one record listed
(SADOWSKA, Sura Mindlja - 1870 - D - Akt 11) which I was unable to locate
because the Jewish group of records began at 1871. There was another
grouping of records after the Jewish group. Akt 11 in what I thought would
be the death records didn't look right to me but I decided to print it
none-the-less. I've had it translated and can now confirm that this isn't
the correct record.

I'm sending this for 2 reasons...first so that anyone else looking at these
films will know to continue beyond the initial records; secondly I'm hoping
that someone else may have used this film as well as 1713996 & 1713997
(which seem to have similar issues in how they are organized) and can give
me some guidance for finding the correct records.

Thanks as always,

1. Is Rezekne also Resitsa?=20

Yes it is the same place. Not different spellings, but different names
during different time periods.

2. Where would one go about finding records for
Rezekne?

JewishGen has a new database which lists the residents of Rezekne in

means School so this address would be 49 School Street...

Re: help finding litv. immigrant who left chicago for SA #southafrica

Ann Rabinowitz <annrab@...>

Dear Susan:

Getting to South Africa is the easy part, it is the finding out what
happened once he got there that is difficult.

The most likely scenario for his travel itinerary is that he would have
taken a train to New York, caught a ship to England and then caught a ship
from there to South Africa. Usually, you would look up the passenger in the
Poor Jews' Temporary Shelter Database, but he does not appear to be there.

If he was looking for gold, he would have gone to the Transvaal to
participate in the Witwatersrand Gold Rush in 1886 which produced almost
half of the gold ever found on earth. Many men went to find their fortunes
including one's who had also participated in the California gold rush. Very
often, they did not have relatives to go to; some made it, others did not,
and returned to their countries of origin or moved on.

Another factor which caused some of the gold rush miners to move on was the
advent of the Boer War in 1899. However, your great grandfather may have
stayed during that time and joined up on either side of the war.

An interesting 1911 article on the Transvaal gives an idea of what the
country was like:

"TRANSVAAL." LoveToKnow 1911 Online Encyclopedia. © 2003, 2004 LoveToKnow.

http://61.1911encyclopedia.org/T/TR/TRANSVAAL.htm

I would suggest you also look at the JewishGen InfoFiles on South Africa
which are located at: http://www.jewishgen.org/infofiles/#SouthAfrica This
will help you to determine what resources might be available for you to use
to find info on your great grandfather.

It would be good to know when he returned to the U.S. Also, you never said
if your great grandfather abandoned his family or divorced his wife. This
situation might provide records for you to check.

Good luck!!!

Martha LEV-ZION <martha@...>

Louis BLUM d. 1929 [son of Nathan and Agnes], married Bettie
HIMMELHOCH in South Africa. They had three children: Joseph, called
Jose, d. 1997, buried in Israel; Doreen [married WASSERSTEIN; and
Lesley.

I am looking for any information on these families and their
descendants.

Additionally, When Jose's wife Ruby came to israel to bury Jose, along
with their three children: Leon, Neil and Tessa, they reportedly
never returned to South Africa but stayed in Israel. Every Leon BLUM
in Israel has been called, and although every one of them has a South
African connection, none is "my" Leon.

Can anyone help with either knowledge or suggestions on where to go
from here?
Thanks in advance, and happy Channukah!
