IAJGS 2006 Conference New York Cemetery Visit FAQ's #southafrica

Ada Green

For those of you planning to take our organized New York cemetery
visits during the 26th IAJGS
International Conference on Jewish Genealogy >from August 13-18, 2006,
hosted by The Jewish Genealogical Society (New York), we have just
added a section on Cemetery Visits to our Frequently Asked Questions.
They can be found at
<http://www.jgsny2006.org/frequently_asked_questions.cfm>, along with
the already existing sections on Conference Registration, Hotel
Reservations, Hotel Accommodations, and Miscellaneous.

We tried to anticipate as many questions about the cemetery visits as
we could think of and hopefully haven't left anything out. Be sure to
read them all and if you have any further inquiries please post them to
the New York 2006 Conference Mailing List. You can sign up for the
mailing list by
visiting <http://lyris.jewishgen.org/listmanager/>.

During your cemetery visit, please consider indexing your ancestral
landsmanshaftn plot or other burial society (synagogue, fraternal
organization, occupational plot, etc.) for the JewishGen Online
Worldwide Burial Registry (JOWBR).

Re: Grave photos - Smith #latvia

It would appear that my paternal grandmother's name (prior to
her emigration to the U.S.) was some variant of KUSNETSOVA.
At some point after her arrival at Ellis Island (where her
name remained the same) and after her being in the U.S. her
name was changed to Smith.

It would seem that KUSNETSOVA can be translated to blacksmith
or "smith".

Good Luck.

Is there someone out there who might be willing to photograph the gravemarkers
for me in the hope that the markings would lead me to their name before they
became "SMITH" in the US.

It is with deep sadness that the Jewish Genealogical Society announces the
untimely passing of former Vice President, 2006 IAJGS Conference Co-Chair,
longtime Executive Council member and member of the JewishGen Board of
Governors, Lucille Gudis. Her tireless and generous devotion to the Jewish
genealogical community, her genealogical expertise and inspiration, her
warmth and treasured friendship, will all be sorely missed. The Society
will be establishing a memorial fund in honor of Lucille; details will be
posted at our website (www.jgsny.org).

May the family of Lea Bat Sosha be consoled among the mourners of Zion and
Jerusalem.

Happy Hanukkah to All #poland

Bialystoker

Dear All BIALYGenners:

We wish you all a very Happy Hanukkah. Also, a very healthy, happy,
prosperous, and genealogically successful New Year.

BIALYGen continues to acquire and process data and information that
hopefully will be helpful to all of you. We will outline some of these
existing and new initiatives early in 2006. As the year winds down, now
is a good time to think about BIALYGen and JewishGen, our parent and
host. Please consider a contribution to the BIALYGen General Fund to
allow us to continue to acquire and process data and information of
value to all of us. In addition, please contribute an equal amount to
the JewishGen General Fund. JewishGen provides this discussion forum,
the BIALYGen website, and all BIALYGen databases at no cost and we all
need to support all that JewishGen contributes to Jewish Genealogists.

Many of you may have seen the Latke discussion on the JRI-Poland mailing
list. My Bialystoker born mother always served her hand made latkes with
sugar. I did not know about latkes with apple sauce until I married. My
Romanian born Bubbe-in-law served her latkes with apple sauce.

Tell us how your Bialystoker ancestors served their latkes.

Enjoy the holidays,

trying to find kever in Israel of Rav Tzvi Hirsh Braude of Salant #general

Todd Brody

The Tzvi Hirsh that I am looking for is not the
son-in-law of Simcha Zisel Ziv, but rather the Tzvi
Hirsh Braude who was the rabbi of Alsedziai and later
the ABD of Salant where he was the teacher of Rav.
Israel Salanter. I understand that this Tzvi Hirsh
Braude died in Israel in 1865. If anyone can help me
find his kever, I would be most appreciative. I am
going to Israel next week and would love to be able to
visit his kever.
