I haven't yet seen the movie, which disappeared all too quickly >from SF
Bay area theaters, but I did read the book and enjoyed it immensely.
It is a combination of fantasy and fact, humor and tragedy, and has a
lot to say about what drives many of us to find out more about where we
came from. See the movie or not but definitely DO read the book.

My name is Chaya and I am named after someone--my maternal grandfather
Chaim, who died in 1938, before I was born. Chaya is also a Hebrew
version of Vivian, my secular name. It's possible that my Hungarian
family had a different approach to naming traditions but, as we've said
so many times, there are very few hard and fast rules in genealogy.

Can someone tell me the reason the name LYAUFER / LAUFER sometimes appears
as a given name and sometimes as a sur name?

1879 Marriage Registration lists groom as Lyaufer KHAIM / Laufer HAIM
(Russian / Latin transliteration) but his father as Shimon LYAUFER / Szymon
LAUFER (Russian/Latin transliteration). The bride's names and her father's
names are not reversed.

1885 Birth Registration gives the father as Lyaufer KHAIM / Laufer HAIM
(Russian / Latin transliteration) and the child as Mashak Izyk / Maszah Izyk
(Russian/Latin transliteration).
The mother's names are in the same order as on the Marriage Registration

Both records were registered in Lodz, Poland in the Russian language.

1907 Immigration records give Mashak Izyk/Maszah Izyk as Morris LAUFER

In researching, do I look for both as surnames?

Thanks for assistance,

It's actually very difficult to find evidence of the existence of this
custom *anywhere*, especially in the last 7 or 8 centuries. Where it
did exist, it was generally an excuse for levying fines or taxes
"instead".

But it makes for a great plot device in plays and operas!

during the late 19th, early 20th century?

Hi genners,
Mark,

I remembered when I saw a photo of a grand-uncle in a unidentified uniform
and posted with no success. In my case it was so non-descript It could have
been the uniform of a waiter in a restaurant. The only difference was the
insignia on the hat. This search, not yet complete, led me to search some
web sites and there are several experts in research.

This is one:

http://www.austro-hungarian-army.co.uk/infunif.htm
and another >from a commercial site

Possibly either may hold the answer you seek.

I have found that the google search can reveal many pictorials that can
help make distinguishing points. Good luck.

TANNENBAUM - FEUERLICHT, NYC? #hungary

Marian Brown

Dear All,

I am looking for information about the descendants of Rabbi
Adolph/Abraham TANNENBAUM (cir 1841-1899) and his wife Lisette HOLSTEIN
(b1832? - ). Adolph married family members and was connected to
Congregation Chasam Sopher. In 1899 he lived at 9 Clinton Street,
across the street >from the synagogue.

Recently, I found that Adolph & Lisette had a son, Simon TANNENBAUM, a
physician. There is a Simon TANNENBAUM in 1920 in Philadelphia who was
Superintendent of the Jewish Hospital and Home for the Aged. His wife
was Sarah and the children were Adolf, , Stella, and Louise.

Also, Adolph & Lisette may have had a daughter, Rosa TANNENBAUM, married
to Max FEUERLICHT and they had a daughter Ethel, b 1873 and a son,
Adolph A., b 1901.

Is this familiar to anyone?

Thanks,

Dear group,

I wonder if there are any information sources you know about in Hungary,
specifically in Budapest, that can help me trace a relative whose details I
found in the Neveklarsfeld survivors list. I am trying to find the living
relatives of Erdos Gabor, son of Dr. Erdos Josef (son of Erdos Ignacz and
Reinitz Rosa) and Margit Barcza. Finding his descendants would help me
immensely in solving a difficult piece in the puzzle. His record details
are:

Registrant's First Name GABOR
Gender M
Date of Birth 1922
Place of Birth BUDAPEST
Mother's Family Name BARCA
Mother's First Name MARGIT
Address Street HORTHY MIKLOS

Any help would be appreciated.

Dear Judy,
I noticed that you had Grossman in your family. I believe my
ancesters Mendel & Raisa (Rose) Grossman came >from the
county of Saros. I was wondering if we might have a family
connection. I know it was a huge family. My great-
grandmother, Dvora (Dora) Grossman was one of their
children. They came into this country sometime in the mid-
1880s. Most of our Grossman family are buried in a Hungarian
section of Mt. Hebron in NYC.

Thanks for any help.
