Abraham "Jock" Beron was director of a school in Johannesburg known to me
only as "The Jewish Day School". Communication with his daughter, Wendy
Basden stopped abruptly after a cordial exchange.

I'll be grateful for help in contacting members of Dr Beron's family.

Re: S.J. Wolpe #southafrica

Ann Rabinowitz <annrab@...>

Today, I came upon an interesting reference to an S.J. Wolpe, naturalized
British citizen, resident of Transvaal, who was murdered on March 22, 1911,
in Angola. There are three references to this person in the SA National
Archives.

I am wondering if anyone knows who this was, what his actual first name was,
and why he was murdered?

One often thinks that the lives of our ancestors were safe and secure in
Southern Africa, but often they were not and this reference to a murder is
an example of this. There may be other references to situations which
occurred that also confirm this lack of security in the frontier society
which was Southern Africa.

STRIBER #general

Steinsteve@...

On a 1944 death certificate, I found that the maiden name of the deceased was
STRIBER. The father's first name was Julius and is listed as >from "Austria."
The handwriting seems pretty clear (e.g. the "t" is crossed and the "i" is
dotted), though I could be reading it incorrectly. The deceased is listed as
having been born in 1911 in the US. The family is a New York family, and the
deceased is buried in the New York City area (Beth David).

I cannot trace this individual back because I can't find any apparently
Jewish people with this surname, either in the 1910 thru 1930 censuses or on
Ellis Island, or on JGFF or JOWBR. I've also tried STROBER, STRUBER, STREIBER
and SCHREIBER with no success on the Julius part. I'm seeking realistic
suggestions as to what the name might really be, or if someone can find
references to the surname in some other source. I also called the cemetery
where the person on the certificate is buried, and there are no related graves
that might indicate a variation on the name.

I can email the scanned document privately if you would like. Thanks in
advance.

Sailing on the Kaylyn C 1910 #general

Hello_

My grandfather Morris Gerber sailed >from Bremen to
Philadelphia sometime in the late spring/ early summer
July 1910. On his Naturalization form, it says he
arrived July 1st. In checking ship's manifests,
info, I found there was a Kalyn and a Koln and that
the dates of the sailings do not quite add up to the
info I have. Does anyone else know about these ships
or have more info on going thru Bremen or arriving in
Philly?

My maternal grandfather was known in all documents as Salli GRU(umlaut)NHUT.
( GRUNHUT umlaut on first U )
His gravestone in Tauberbischofsheim shows very clearly, Samuel in Hebrew as
his given name.
I found it interesting that even in the official documents, he was never
known by any other name than Salli. Regards to all,

Re: how to order books from Germany #germany

Irene Newhouse <einew@...>

In the past, I have posted that there's a way to order new German books that
avoids the high shipping charges charged by the web's most visible online
source of books. The source to which I refer charges postage only >from
their location in the mainland US.

If anyone needs the URL for this source of books, please contact me.

As far as out-of-print German books go, there is a commercial URL that
serves as a major clearing house for used books in German & I can supply
that as well. They have recently added an English interface, though not all
the book descriptions are in English.

A heartfelt thanks for helping me find submitter of POTs- and Success!!! #general

Leslie Weinberg <artsoul@...>

So many of you volunteered to help me find an Eliezer Veinberger in
Israel. He had submitted a number of POTs for Veinberger and Blumenberg
in the 50s. Two people, Bila and Patricia, actually called and found
him, and through Bila, I was put in touch with Eliezer's granddaughter
Meital. As with the Blumenberg I was in touch with briefly here in the
U.S., Eliezer is totally unaware that there were survivors of the
Blumenberg family >from Tyczyn. I think the man is in shock at this
point! My grandfather's sister, Hene Eisen, married Jonas Blumenberg,
in Tyczyn, Poland, and, as it turns out, Eliezer is Jonas' nephew, and
remembers the whole family, including the three children, his first
cousins, and he has assumed all this time that they perished in Tyczyn,
Poland. I know, for a fact, that the eldest child, a son, Mozes, was in
Israel >from the 1930s till 1945 and that he spoke of going to Russia to
find siblings. This makes me think he got word >from his mother that she
had gotten the two girls out to Russia. Although the trail has been
cold since 1945, there is hope that the three children, or their
families, are still alive, somewhere.

In addition, if Eliezer' mother is someone other than the only known
female Blumenberg to have left Tyczyn in time, it means there may be a
lot of other surviving Blumenbergs >from this one family which had at
least nine or ten children.

These three children of Hene and Jonas would be my mother's first
cousins, and of course Eliezer's as well. Just hearing >from his
granddaughter that he knew these three children sends chills up my spine
- it finally makes them real.

Again, thanks to those who went out of their way to contact Eliezer,
something I would never have thought to do on my own. I will soon be
calling Meital in Israel with the help of someone who speaks Hebrew, so
that we may try to put some more of the pieces together and perhaps
continue the search for Mozes, Rachela, and Zofia. Leslie Weinberg

VM7230-31 & VM7234-35 Just Posted. Seeking Any And All Information On Them #general

sacredsisters3@aol.com <sacredsisters3@...>

Hello To All

I am seeking any and all information on any of these four pictures that
have just been posted. I am really interested in seeking any and all
information regarding VM7230. That is a marriage record of my
grandfathers mother. Apparently after being in America since 1930 and
already widowed had decided to remarry. So no one gets confused,
because the age is hard to read. The man she married was 70 years of
age and she was 58.

Her maiden name was LEMBERG. I am trying to trace her whereaboust after
that and have come to a roadblock. I am slowly chipping away at it but
could use some help. If you know anything about the FAIKES family
please contact me. I already know that she was still living in 1938,
because another researcher has helped me uncover the second husband's
death date. After that I have no clue what became of her and I have no
one to ask. So if there is someone out there who may know then please
contact me.

I also want to thank all the wonderfull people who have helped me in my
research, especially to the ones that continue to help because they are
just as determined to help me solve the mystery. The other photos if
any one has information that would be great too. One is an obit of my
great-uncle David Greenberg. He mostly lived in Connecticut and worked
for the Bridgeport Post Newspaper.

The other two photos are of my grandmother Ruth(rakoff)Faikes and my
great-uncle(her brother) Murray Rakoff. The one of ruth is a graduation
photo I believe. Murray died in 10/16/2001. Everyone who knew him loved
and always said there was never a nicer guy. I do know that he
volunteered a lot at the hospitals in Brooklyn. He never left brooklyn,
no matter how many times my grandmother tried to make him move closer
to her so she could take care of him. I think he was afraid to leave
his comfort zone.

Anyways I am getting off the subject here. So, again thanks to all
those whove helped and continue to do so.
