Przerosl Jewish Cemetery Restoration Project #poland

Hank Mishkoff

A quick note for those of you with ancestors >from (and/or interest in)
Przerosl:

I'm coordinating a project to restore the Jewish Cemetery in Przerosl
(I created a website for the project, which is online at
http://www.Przerosl.com/).

I visited Przerosl in 1999, and I was pleasantly surprised to see that
the land occupied by the cemetery was still intact, but completely
overgrown (my website about that trip is online at
http://www.WebFeats.com/Poland/New/p100799/12.html).

I decided to try to restore the cemetery, so I launched the project
a few years ago. It's been slow going, but progress has been made
(in a series of fits and starts); I'm determined to crank it up again
in hopes of generating a little more momentum this time.

If you have any questions about the project, the material at the website
will probably answer most of them -- but please feel free to contact me
privately if you'd like any additional information.

[BTW: My favorite part of the project website are the essays written
last year by Przerosl high school students about the Jews of Przerosl
(they're online at http://www.Przerosl.com/Essays.html). >from one of
them, I learned that a local man got hold of the Torah before the
Nazis destroyed the synagogue, and he's been saving it ever since --
there's a photo of it with the essay, it looks like it's not in great
shape, but the fact that it exists at all is amazing.]

Biala / Bielsko / Bystra / Grybow / Kety/ Krynica / Nowy Sacz #poland

N. Ring-Kendrick <adamsny@...>

Hello Everyone,

It has been quite some time since I have been a subscriber to these two
lists. This week I decided to subcribe again, and post the areas and people
I am searching, with the hope that maybe a distant relative is out there
searching, too!

Surnames of interest: BLOCH / DZIEKIEWICZ / KISH / KWASNY or KWASNEY / RING
Locations of interest: Biala / Bielsko / Bystra / Grybow / Kenty / Nowy
Sacz / Tarnow

1. Herman RING was born in 1850 possibly in Nowy Sacz, Grybow, or Tarnow.
Died: 7/21/1884 at 34 yoa.
Burial: Jewish cemetery in Bielsko-Aleksandrowice, grave number:
F-VIII-2272.
We believe in 1870 he went to Kety near Biala (Bielsko) and >from Kety
he went to Bystra near Bielsko.
Father, mother, and siblings of Herman RING are unknown at this time.

2. Herman RING married Helena (Leni) BLOCH with the date and location
unknown at this time.
Helena Barbara BLOCH's exact birth date and location is unknown.
Estimated birth year between 1854-1858.
Helena Barbara BLOCH immigrated to the United States in 1889 or the
early 1890's.
Died: Location and date unknown.
Helena BLOCH's father was Baruch BLOCH

4. We know that Herman RING and Helena (Leni) BLOCH had several children,
with at least three of them immigrating to the United States >from the
former Austro-Hungarian Empire. We believe those three may have
Americanized their given names and only know them as Leopold, John and
Clementine RING.

Children of Herman and Helena RING we know of:

Leopold RING
Born around 1874 or 1875 possibly in Biala / Bielsko / Bystra / Grybow /
Kety / Nowy Sacz / Krynica.
Immigrated to the United States in 1889 or 1890 (still trying to locate
passenger record for him)
Lived in Bridgeport, CT and South River, NJ
Married Regina KISH in 1900.
Died: 1916 in South River, NJ

Clementine or Clementina RING
Born in 1879 or 1880 near Biala / Bielsko / Bystra / Grybow / Kety / Nowy
Sacz / Krynica.
Immigrated to the United States on the Elbe, September of 1892
Lived in Bridgeport CT and Cranston, RI.
Married Alexander DZIEKEIWICZ (who also used the surname ADAMS)
Died in Cranston, RI in 1929

John RING
Born in 1884 or 1885 possibly in Biala / Bielsko / Bystra / Grybow / Kety /
Nowy Sacz / Krynica.
Immigtated to the United States in 1889 or 1890 (still trying to locate
passenger record for him)
Lived in Bridgeport, CT, Cranston, RI, and Pittsburgh, PA.
Married Mary Irene Joyce in 1902 in Pittsburgh, PA.
Died September 07, 1965 in Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, PA

Salca (Sali) RING was born in 1880 in Bystra house number 8.
Died April 13, 1881and is buried in Jewish cemetery in Bielsko-
Aleksandrowice in children sector "D".
This is all we know about Salca.

Bernhard RING was born March 23, 1883 in Bystra, house number 8.
We have no further information on Bernhard RING.

In 1885 a baby was born to Herman RING and Helene (Leni) BLOCH in Bystra.
The child died during birth and was not named.
RING Baby buried in Jewish cemetery in Bielsko-Aleksandrowice in children
sector "D".

3. Vital records and source documentation infer that Helena married a
second time. Her second husband's name is either; Adolf KWASNY or KWASNEY
or Adolf RING (records list both names).
It is unknown where or when they were maried, but at least by 1893 (the
year of my grandfather's birth in the U.S.).
Helena is listed as my grandfather's mother on a birth record >from
Bridgeport, CT in November of 1893.
Adolf KWASNEY or KWASNY is listed as the father, which also coincides with
other vital records of my grandfather (Felix RING).
We do not know when or where Adolf (Adolph) died.

4. We are also trying to learn more about the following individuals, as
they may be RING relatives:

Augusta (Gusti) RING: hospital records inticate she died on 8/22/1915 in
Bielsko hospital at 24 years of age.
Gusti was called "home register" in Krynica.
She died of typhus and is buried in Jewish cemetery in Bielsko-
Aleksandrowice in grave number: F-VI-2216.

Near the grave of Herman RING is the grave of Gusti Ring who was born in
1868 and died in 1892.

If anyone has any information or links to these individuals, I would love
to hear >from you. In addition, if anyone lives near the Bielsko-
Aleksandrowice cemetery, and could take pictures of the grave stones
(if they still exist) it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your time and any response!

Searching the 1929 Polish Business Directory #poland

Howard Fink <HowGen@...>

I am happy to announce that it is now possible to search for surnames
through the entire 1929 Polish Business Directory. The credit for
this goes to Logan Kleinwaks for performing the OCR (Optical
Character Recognition) effort and developing the tools to make this
process work, the purchase of higher quality scans of the 1929 Polish
Business Directory by Jewish Records Indexing - Poland. Logan has
added this Directory to his other databases at his Historical
Directory Search Engine:

http://www.kalter.org/search

A few years ago the OCR technology was not capable of analyzing the
spotted and accented pages that we had >from this Directory.
Fortunately, we are now able to surmount these issues and thousands
of pages have been processed.

After finding potential pages using Logan's Search Engine you can
view copies of the Directory pages on the Jewish Records Indexing -
Poland web site, hosted by JewishGen. Here are the basic steps:

1) Select the button to Search the 1929 Poland and Danzig Business
Directory at:
http://www.kalter.org/search and provide your search information and
type.

2) Make a note of the resulting page numbers, which will appear below
the search fields.

3) Go to the Jewish Records Indexing - Poland 1929 Polish Business
Directory Project web site at:
http://www.jewishgen.org/jri-pl/bizdir/tableofcontents.htm and select
the section that contains your page number. (Note that you may click
on the Directory title on the page containing your search results to
go to this web page.)

4) Enter your exact page number in the box at the top center of the
screen and use either the "Click for Page" control or the "Right
click HERE to save page ..." control at the top of the page.

5) You can continue to navigate to additional pages >from here.

More information on this project can be found at:

http://www.jri-poland.org/bizdir/start.htm

Please consider that both sites may have heavy traffic for a few days
after this announcement and that while Logan can answer questions
about his Search Engine, questions about the pages and Town Indexing
should be directed to me.

Seeking ROTHFELS in Ronshausen #germany

Volker Biehl <rehaugen@...>

Dear readers,
I am searching ancestors and descendents of Leopold ROTHFELS, Born in
36217 Ronshausen, Hessen, Germany, died in WW I, 6 Okt 1916. I suppose,
the family moved to Bebra, between 1887 and 1898.
Theodor ROTHFELS, b: March 4, 1901, Bebra; Roni ROTHFELS, b: May 3,
1898, Bebra; and Berta ROTHFELS, b: Jan 16, 1887 Ronshausen; All three
were murdered in the holocaust.
It seems to me, that they were related, but at the moment I have no
connection between this names.
The ROTHFELS family would be the second Jewish family in 36217
Ronshausen. Up to now I haven`t found any trace of this family. Thank you for
your answers.

Bronx births in 1920's #general

Gloria Bailey <GAB123@...>

This is just a clarification in response to Shellie - below.

The reason my relative believed her parents lied about their home address is
that their address as written on the birth certificate is her Uncle's Bronx
address rather than her parent's own address in Queens. Whether they felt
it was necessary to live in the Bronx to have a baby there is unknown to me,
but certainly, they claimed to live where they did not live on that birth
certificate.

I do want to reiterate a point that Shellie is also making. Registration of
births is a legal requirement. Hospitals had the forms and midwives had the
forms. A home birth would have to be registered even if not aided by a
doctor or midwife. Perhaps the parents in question in the original posting
(birth elsewhere than in hospital) took the baby to the hospital as the
easiest way to register the birth, or for a checkup and at the same time
registered the birth.
