Re: Town of Hertza #general

The town called Herta, actually with a diacritical under the letter 't',
was pronounced for that reason as Hertsa. It was formerly in the county
(judete) of Dorohoi. It is now known as Gertsa, and is in Ukraine.
This is one of the few areas of Romania where there are Jewish metrical
records filmed by the Mormons, since it was not Romania at the time, but
in Ukraine.
The ROM-SIG and JewishGen have been attempting to get permission >from
the Ukrainian archivist to put this data online, but so far have not
been successful. We will keep trying...

Meanwhile, if you go to the LDS Catalog <www.familysearch.org>, and
enter the place name of Dorohoi, and Romania, you will get a list of
films that contain data >from Gertsa(Herta) >from about 1869-70 till
about 1807.

Notation on Post-Holocaust Manifest #general

Stew Driller

I have a manifest for two relatives who arrived in NYC in
1948. The title is "Alien Passenger Manifest, For Passsengers
Traveling to the United States under President's Directive of
Dec. 22, 1945."

In the Remarks column, there is a notation "H.T.C." for each
person. Does anyone know what that means? There is also a
handwritten (the rest of the manifest is typed) note for each
person which either says HIAS, TA, or USNA. I know about
HIAS. What are the others?

Thanks,

Stew Driller,

Tracing my grate grandparents SOKOLOWER with your help on Viewmate - part 2 #poland

Avraham (Avi) Ayalon <ayalonav@...>

Dear list members,

I am still trying to trace my ancestors: I know that my grandfather
Abraham Icek SOKOLOWER who I am called after, was born in Zielun in 1895
to his parents: SOKOLOWER Shraga fajwel Majer and SOKOLOWER Chawa.

I have posted on Viewmate 3 more certificates, that I ordered >from
Archiwum Panstwowe m. st. Warszawy, Oddzial w Pultusku, In the Russian
language.

As the names are similar but varies >from one document to another, I can
not be sure which of them are my g-grand-parents. Also, it might be that
they were called after another member of the family, dead or alive (a
common tradition in my family), and thus all of those certificates are
of family members of mine, but of different generations.

Any assistance with the translation of these documents and the details
contained in them into English or Hebrew would be very much appreciated.

The files VM7659 - VM7661 are all in the VM index:

Following the posting of Logan Kleinwaks I took a
stroll of leisure through it. Looked mainly at
Krakow,Lodz and Lwow.Though knowledge of Polish might
be helpful, you do not have to know Polish
to understand it.The 2 last paragraphs in every entry
give the names of the board of direcrors and the
managers.Quite a Jewish presence there.The given names
are sometimes Polanized(is it the right term???) but
the surnames are quite intact.

I understand that in order to obtain a birth certificate >from the New York
City Department of Health, one needs the written permission of the person

The information you're looking for can be found at
http://www.nyc.gov/html/records/html/vitalrecords/home.shtml

Here is what is said for birth certificates for anyone born after 1910.

http://www.nyc.gov/html/doh/html/vr/vr.shtml

Unfortunately, when you apply for a certificate which isn't your own, if
that person was born post 1910, an original, notarized letter signed by that
person authorizing release of their certificate to you must be provided. You also
must supply that person's photo ID as well as your own. I assume that if
the person is dead you'd have to prove that to them in some way.

Town of Hertza #general

I also believe "Herca" is "Hertza." My great-uncle Moshe Landau of
Holon, Israel was the gabbai / secretary of a chassidic rebbe who lived

from. Unfortunately, my uncle is deceased and I have no more

While looking at the mapquest map, I noticed a small
place [town, village, shtetl, dorf?!?! - please,
don't] located halfway between Cz and Dorohoi named
Herca. This could potentially be the place where
Sarah's great-grandfather was born/had lived.
