Hi--
I am writing a book about my grandmother's village,
Israilovka, also known as Yazer, which was located 9 km NE of
Ustinovka, 85 km south of Kirovograd and 30 km east of Brobinets. I
am writing about events that took place just before and during WWII,
including a massacre in the summer of 1942.
I am interested in locating relative who may have survived,
as well as any other surviving residents of the town. I am a
professional historian, with training in oral history, as well as
published poet, and want to tell this personal story about one
village as part of the larger story of the holocaust, and of Soviet
Jews in particular. My own family surnames are SAKHNIN, SHEVELEV,
DURKIROV, KHOUSETVISKY, ZASLOFF, LOSHKIN, but I would be very
interestedinspeaking with anyone fromt he village who may know about
the war years, Please emailme directly at aurora@historica.us.
Thank you,

Aurora Levins Morales, Berkeley, California, USA

Sources in Vienna - 1826 #general

Omri Arnon <omri@...>

Dear Group,

My great grandfather Ignacz (Ignatz) REINITZ, born and raised in
Nagykanizsa, Hungary, attended the University of Vienna in the 1826-7. He
was enrolled in the first year of the Philosophy Faculty in 1826 and
probably stopped studying there in 1827/8 when he moved to Budapest to study
medicine.

I checked with the University archive and it seems that while they have
Ignacz registered in the University, they do not hold additional details of
the students >from these years.

I know that Ignacz and his widow mother Regina lived in Vienna these years.
Regina probably continued living in Vienna or possibly Kis Marton
(Eisenstadt) in the late 1820s.

I wonder if anyone can help me with sources that will provide details of
their residence and additional details about Regina REINITZ.

Thanks,

Omri Arnon

Missing Family Link: HYMAN / HEYMAN #general

JUDITH PARIS <judyparis@...>

I only recently discovered that a member of the family ever existed. Seems
he angered the family with his marriage and was never spoken of again! His
name was Abraham HYMAN, b. 1890 probably in Poland, to Louis and Pauline
Hyman. Emigrated 1906, Naturalized 1911. Lived in New York City at least
through the 1930 census. He married a Beatrice---(?) who was born 1895.They
had four children. Milton (b. 1914), Wilbur(b. 1916), Shirley (1919) and
Harold (1925). All dates are approximate since they come >from the census
reports. Sometime before the 1930 Census he changed his name (and I assume
his children's) to Meyers Heyman.
He had 4 brothers (Samuel, Isidore, Milton, and Joseph) and one sister - my
maternal grandmother Annie. I'd love to be able to find his descendents -
considering he had four children there could be quite a lot of them. Anyone
having any information or suggestion please contact me privately at:

Hi,

Now there is a way to search for the exact edition, then one can go to
view the microfilm without having to sift through many editions in
order to find the article.

Yes, I also found several potentially interesting entries but thought the
price a little high! The BL web-site is www.bl.uk, >from where you can go to
Newspapers and thence to their catalogue. The entry for the JC
http://www.bl.uk/catalogues/newspapers/record.ASP?lngMTitle=9 says:

Place London; England
Main title The Jewish Chronicle
Numbers ser.1. no.1-ser.2. no.3
Dates 12 Nov. 1841-22 May 1842

Continued as Jewish Chronicle and Working Man's Friend
Numbers [n.s.] vol.1. no.1-20
Dates 18 Oct. 1844-13 June 1845
Continued as Jewish Chronicle
Numbers vol.1. no.21-
Dates 27 June 1845-

Notes Microfilm: 1841-1917; 1919-20

I'm sure you can get copies but I don't remember the exact procedure.

Thanks to Laurence Harris for informing about the digitising of The
Jewish Chronicle...
I would then like to go to The British Library, Newspaper section,
Colindale Avenue, to look at the items.

MODERATOR NOTE: Please may I prevail on members of this list to put a subject
in the subject box rather than use for example Digest 06 March. This makes it
easier when searching the archives for a specific.

Looking for shtetl Kuperchik #lithuania

Assaf Urieli <assaf@...>

Sholem aleykhem,

I've been trying to find out where my grandmother's family went when
expelled >from Siauliai in May 1915.

So far, I've discovered that they left by a hired wagon, and arrived in
the village of Kuperchik (pronounced Kupersik or Kupershik by another
great-aunt), where they rented a house a few kilometers outside of the
centre of town.

I haven't been able to locate Kuperchik on the map or in the Shtetl-seeker.

My guess is that it may have been the same as Kupiskis (or Kupishok),
since it lies 101 km east of Shavl - does anybody with a relationship to
this village know if it may have also been pronounced as Kuperchik? If
not, what other villages might this refer to?

Best regards,

As far as I know, my grandfather (Mark/Marko) Cohen had four sisters
who left Bialystok and went to the US. Mark did not initailly follow
them but instead went to live with an Uncle in Argentina and eventually
moved to the UK. Their parent - Yehuda and Yachah remained in Bialystok

The sisters all married ( only have surnames of husbands)

Julie - Simmons
Becky - Miller
Mary - Levine
Annie - Israel Wineberg

Nobody in my family has any data beyond what I have stated and I am
at a loss how to go any further.

Any help would be appreciated.
