re Cohens #lithuania

Margaret Fullarton and David Mark <fullmark@...>

Not the surname but the meaning - How do you know if you are a cohen?
(as in of the priestly people??) My husband's family is of them and at
funerals the men of the direct line must sit apart >from the rest of us
at funerals. Can anyone explain this to me and how it has come about
and why modern families still adhere to it? My family just sticks to it
but when I have asked for the way they know this they cannot tell me.
cheers and thanks

Margaret Fullarton

Seligmans in Ekaterinoslav #ukraine

Scott D. Seligman <heyscott@...>

According to records >from the Minsk Archives, several members of my SELIGMAN
family moved >from Parichi (outside Bobruisk) to Ekaterinoslav in the late
1880s/early 1890s, no doubt participating in the government's plan to
encourage Jews to establish new agricultural settlements in Novorussia.

Simon Zalmonov ZELIKMAN (b. 1832) and his wife Rochla and Simons' brother
Pinchas Zalmanov ZELIKMAN (b. 1842) were among them, and possibly their
brothers Avram, Meyer Leib and Aaron as well. Simon's family was "ruled out
from Parichi petty bourgeoisie >from the beginning of 1st half 1887 . by the
reason of including them into Ekaterinoslav 2nd guild tradesmans." Pinchas
was included in "Ekaterinoslav petty bourgeoisies."

I've done extensive research in Belarus but I'm a Ukraine newbie. Can anyone
suggest some research strategies to point me in the right direction to see
what became of these folks? In particular, what record groups are available
in Ukraine for these agricutural settlers, and does anyone have a researcher
to recommend?

Many thanks...

Scott Seligman

Fw: Fieldgate Street #unitedkingdom

Derek & Rosemary Wenzerul <dandr@...>

Dear Jonathan
Just a thought that perhaps the people named as living at 9,10,11 Fieldgate
Street in 1891 were employees of Grodzinski's shop, as shop owners and staff
sometimes did live above the premises?

All the best

I have replied separately to Jonathan with the census references for
the page he wants.

I would remind the group that I have CDs for London Censuses >from
1841 to 1901 inclusive. Each box of CDs contains a street index,
which is fairly accurate, and I'd be happy to look up a street name
for you. It takes me all of one minute! Please form the queue at the right.

These Censuses come >from a commercial source. I can provide this
information privately.

In a message dated 1/22/2006 bloch@mts.net writes:

Michael Bernet was correct in stating that pupik / pipik is the name
for chicken (or goose) gizzard. This is the actual translation of the
word. My mother used to make a "rosselle ( stew ) of chicken
pipiklech (gizzards) gergalech ( necks) and hartselech (hearts) .
Full disclosure: I declared it was an umbilicus. Weinreich gives both terms
as translations. In this case I earned undeserved praise in the citation.
Usually I get misquoted and someone else's erroneous statement is hauled out to
trump me.

Important: make sure you're citing the correct citation for the correct
person, whether you come to bury Caesar or to praise her.

Vasilkov is/was a district (uyezd) in Kiev Gubernia. All I really know
about it is that the city of Belaya Tserkov (now Bila Cirkva) is within that

Can someone please advise me in which province or gubernia the town of Vasilkov,
Ukraine, is located and how contact can be made to discover a grave site in one

Yad Vashem Find -- Searching for Shabtai Shpringer (Israel) #general

Bopollack@...

My cousin emailed me with the news she may have found a relative via Yad
Vashem. I am new to this but I want to find the poster named Shabtai Shpringer
or the daughter of Shrifra SHPRINGER maiden name Winer (Viner).

My grandfather Yudel Mendel Winner (Julius Winner) came to the USA with his
older sister Rebecca Winner Barofsky. He was the youngest sibling and only
brother or 5 sisters. The parents names were of Gutl(Gordon) and Hinda, Minsk,
Vilna or thereabouts. The family operated apple orchards and had enough money
to travel. They all would have come to the US but for one daughter with an eye
disease now easily treated. During WWII all correspondence stopped. Because
they were sisters and could have been married the only name anyone could
remember was Tzak Springer the husband of one of the sisters.

All the information in the "testimony" fits. I want to find her and her
family. I am the oldest granddaughter of Julius and Rose Nevitsky-Brown Winner.
(My grandmother Gelka also had 4 other sisters. Her brother Max brought them
to the USA and changed Nevitsky to Brown and settled in Mass. I imagine I am
also related to some Brauns of New England.
