Firstly, those who understand German may find this
website of "some" value although it refers to
Nordwuerttemberg [and not Jewish] genealogy:

I would like to comment and amend a few points which
have arisen in this discussion.

1. Re: Factor or Faktor also Hof Faktor {applied to
Court Jews}.

Factor = maker. This is incorrect in the context of
the Hungarian Jewish census and occupations unless one
refers to the Yiddish *macher* which is closer to the
mark!

Also the additional comment: Maker "But not as a
laborer or artisan. He has a factory of some sort."
This too is incorrect. I doubt many/any Jews had
factories when the word Faktor/Factor was in common
use. This word has been discussed before - please look
at the message archives both in the SIG and General
Discussion Group under Factor & Faktor {see footnote}.


The Hof Faktors were the rather elevated {protected}
court Jews - with financial and dealing/trading roles
- found frequently in the Habsburg Empire [Vienna],
in Germany and elsewhere. Read this re the tragic and
famous OPPENHEIMER - immortalised in Jew Suss:

The lesser Faktors/Factors were dealers, {commission}
agents, managers of property or business. In Bohemia
and Moravia for example [in the 1700s - 1800s], many
of the Lords of the Manor used Jews to manage aspects
of their estates [they were designated *Faktors*].

2. Re: *Galanterie* being a clothier. Again, not
strictly correct - the word is not generally applied
to a clothing shop but more to the bits 'n pieces ie
accessories [gloves, hats, belts, ribbons, scarves
etc] and haberdashery. I should know, as my forebears
had such a shop in Pressburg in the early 1800s and I
have correspondence re the purchase of items for the
shop.

3. Re: *Schacterius* {is} presumably slaughterer - and
specifically a Jewish slaughterer.

nb schlachten = to slaughter [German] and schachten
[umlaut a ] = to slaughter according to Jewish rites
[also German].

Appears in the 1736 Jewish census of Pressburg as
Mactator seu Schachter - David Beer [Alsoviecensis].
For *mactator* see url above under *macellator*]. I
assume they are the same. I may be wrong.

4. Re: *Epocillator* - yes it is a publican also known
as epocillator cerevisiae - referring specifically to
beer. However, it can also apply to wine.

5. Re: *educillator*, a server of wine. However it can
also apply to beer; in the 1736 Jewish census of
Pressburg the word appears together with *cerevisiae*
ie beer {Daniel HIRSCHL ex Livonia}.

This is a complex area linguistically, historically
and socially and a straightfoward translation may not
always be the correct one in the context of the
Hungarian Jewish censuses.

lists. It's taken a couple of years but *Eureka*! There they were one day.

of her brothers. Maybe she'd come in with one of them. Instead I found

I don't know why she traveled that way unless it was because my grandfather
had left a step ahead of the army and she was afraid she'd be held back.

Anyway, I thought my experience would be a help to others having trouble

I had searched for William Street without success but have now found it with
Jeremy's help, on my 1873 map. It ran >from Cannon Street Road to Samuel
Street and was about 120 yards in length. By 1913 Samuel Street had become
Wicker Street and many other of the small streets in that immediate area had
been re-named also.

The International Institute for Jewish Genealogy and Paul Jacobi Center
opened this week. Located at the Jewish National and University Library at
Givat Ram, Jerusalem, the new Institute, a non-profit organization, has two
main aims: (1) to engage in Jewish genealogical research and teaching at the
university level and (2) to make Jewish Genealogy a recognized academic
discipline within the realm of Jewish Studies.

The Institute is the only one of its kind in the Jewish world. It plans to
operate on an interdisciplinary basis and also in a collaborative way with
organizations engaged in aspects of Jewish genealogy. It will put a premium
on innovative programs and projects of practical benefit to individual
family historians.

Its establishment is the result of efforts over the last two years of an
international Founding Committee, headed by Sallyann Sack, of Washington,
DC. and Yosef Lamdan of Israel. Lamdan, a former Israeli ambassador to the
Vatican, has been appointed as Director of the Institute.

One of its first projects is an academic symposium to be held in Jerusalem
in September with a view to setting research and teaching priorities for the
new Institute. Experts >from the academic and genealogical world will be
presenting papers.

Latin/English translation websites that I've seen do not include many of
the occupations in which Jews typically participated. Does anyone have
good translations for or could point me to a website for terms such as:

epocillator
equisios pilorus
factor
galantarius
granatarus
granalaru
informator
opifex/opifices (artisan or laborer?)
quaestor (treasurer or paymaster)
quaestor circumforanius

isn't one there today, I thought I would have a look. According to
the London County Council list, there was a William Street in Stepney
(which includes St. George's North) but it was renamed PONLER Street
in 1936.

Ponler Street runs westwards off Cannon Street Road, south of
Commercial Road. It used to turn north and become Wicker Street (in
my 1955 A-Z) but redevelopment seems to have got rid of Wicker and
perhaps truncated Ponler Street.
