Picture of the Yismach Moshe

Todd Brody
I have previously seen a drawing of Moses TEITELBAUM, the Yismach
Moshe, in various books and on the internet. However, now that I am actually trying to find that drawing, I have had no luck. If anyone can direct me to a site where that picture appears I would be most appreciative. Todd Brody Englewood, NJ Searching: BRAUDE (Telz, Alsiad, Plotel), GLASS (Sandomierz, Montreal), ROSENBERG (Skaryszew, Montreal), GROSSER (Sieniawa, Przemysl, Jaroslaw), LAMM (Sieniawa, Przemysl, Jaroslaw), FRANKFORT (Sieniawa), ARFA (Biezun, Zuromin, Sierpc, Plock), MAJ ((Biezun, Zuromin, Sierpc, Plock).

assistance in Manitoba
#general
jutel@...
I have only one short branch to my family tree, and it
remains a bit of a mystery. But, without going into too much detail, I have a lead in Manitoba. I have found a newspaper report about someone with the same unusal name as my great-great uncle (Drozdowitz), working in the same field (pawnbroking), and getting up to the same antics as he did when I found him in Utah a few years later(violence). Although this seems completely out in left field in other ways, I'd like to try to follow up the lead and see if maybe I can find out where he came >from by his brief stint in Canada (if it's the same guy). He was naturalised in Colorado in 1880,and the 1990 US census shows his arrival as 1874. However, I have done no work in Canada before and am not quite sure where to start. My genealogy experience is all US or Europe. Is there anyone on the list either based in, or with some experience searching in Manitoba in the 19th century? I would appreciate if you dropped me a line off-list. many thanks, Annemarie JUTEL Wellington, New Zealand searching: GOLDSTEIN: Marijampole, Indianapolis; STEINBERG: Marjiampole, Louisville; HIRSCHLER: Hessheim, Mannheim, San Francisco; MANHEIM:Ottensoos, San Francisco; DROZDOWITZ: Plonsk, Ogden, Chicago.

re Cohens
#lithuania
Margaret Fullarton and David Mark <fullmark@...>
Not the surname but the meaning - How do you know if you are a cohen?
(as in of the priestly people??) My husband's family is of them and at funerals the men of the direct line must sit apart >from the rest of us at funerals. Can anyone explain this to me and how it has come about and why modern families still adhere to it? My family just sticks to it but when I have asked for the way they know this they cannot tell me. cheers and thanks Margaret Fullarton

Seligmans in Ekaterinoslav
#ukraine
Scott D. Seligman <heyscott@...>
According to records >from the Minsk Archives, several members of my SELIGMAN
family moved >from Parichi (outside Bobruisk) to Ekaterinoslav in the late 1880s/early 1890s, no doubt participating in the government's plan to encourage Jews to establish new agricultural settlements in Novorussia. Simon Zalmonov ZELIKMAN (b. 1832) and his wife Rochla and Simons' brother Pinchas Zalmanov ZELIKMAN (b. 1842) were among them, and possibly their brothers Avram, Meyer Leib and Aaron as well. Simon's family was "ruled out from Parichi petty bourgeoisie >from the beginning of 1st half 1887 . by thereason of including them into Ekaterinoslav 2nd guild tradesmans." Pinchas was included in "Ekaterinoslav petty bourgeoisies." I've done extensive research in Belarus but I'm a Ukraine newbie. Can anyone suggest some research strategies to point me in the right direction to see what became of these folks? In particular, what record groups are available in Ukraine for these agricutural settlers, and does anyone have a researcher to recommend? Many thanks... Scott Seligman

Fw: Fieldgate Street
#unitedkingdom
Derek & Rosemary Wenzerul <dandr@...>
Dear Jonathan
Just a thought that perhaps the people named as living at 9,10,11 Fieldgate Street in 1891 were employees of Grodzinski's shop, as shop owners and staff sometimes did live above the premises? All the best Rosemary Wenzerul dandr@wenzeds.freeserve.co.uk RESEARCHING: BARNETT, BENJAMIN, DEFRIES, GOLDSTON, MOLEN/VANDERMOLEN, MYERS, NUNES-MARTINES/MARTIN AND WENZERUL

I have replied separately to Jonathan with the census references for
the page he wants. I would remind the group that I have CDs for London Censuses >from 1841 to 1901 inclusive. Each box of CDs contains a street index, which is fairly accurate, and I'd be happy to look up a street name for you. It takes me all of one minute! Please form the queue at the right. These Censuses come >from a commercial source. I can provide this information privately. June, Hart Solntseff, ex-Brighton, Sussex, Canada.

Michael Bernet was correct in stating that pupik / pipik is the nameFull disclosure: I declared it was an umbilicus. Weinreich gives both terms as translations. In this case I earned undeserved praise in the citation. Usually I get misquoted and someone else's erroneous statement is hauled out to trump me. Important: make sure you're citing the correct citation for the correct person, whether you come to bury Caesar or to praise her. Michael Bernet, New York
