maternal family of DANIELS. My G grandfather was born there and his name

I have spent the past 30 years researching my MANNHEIMER
ancestors >from Mittlefranken (Bavaria). >from old family
letters, I know there were branches of the family living in
Fuerth, Feuchtwangen and my branch in Schopfloch. The family
name had originally been KOHN. My oldest direct ancestor
was, according to the Matrikel and other records, Ruben
Michael MANNHEIMER, who was the cantor of Schopfloch. Other
records list him as Ruben KOHN MANNHEIMER. Among Ruben's
seven children was my great-great grandfather, Dr. Moises
(Moritz) MANNHEIMER born August 8, 1808. He died in
Dinkelsbuehl, May 28, 1861, and was buried in his birthplace
of Schopfloch. His headstone displays the hands of Kohen.
Moritz had four sisters, Babet (b: 1794), Minet (b: 1796) ,
Ester (b: 1799) and Sara (b: 1813). His brothers were Osser
Jakob (b: 1800) and Lazarus (Ludwig) b: 1806. I have
information on both Moritz and Ludwig and their descendants.
Both were physicians and their widows and children
emigrated to Chicago.

Moritz's brother Osser Jakob MANNHEIMER was born August 13,
1800. Family lore said that he was involved in a duel in
Germany, thought he killed his opponent, fled to France and
joined the French Foreign Legion, was made an officer
(Colonel) and later sent to Algiers. There he met and fell
in love with a princess, was assassinated and no one ever
learned any details. End of story.

I considered this just lore until recently when I discovered
a book "Vergangene Tage: Juedische Kultur in Muenchen"
edited by Hans Lamm, published in 1958. One essay, written
by Dr. Erich ORTENAU, was entitled "Aus einer juedischen
Familientruhe Muenchen" (Papers >from a Jewish Family Trunk
in Munich) pp 106-114. Erich ORTENAU was born 1912, the son
of Dr. Gustav Ortenau and his wife Adele who was a painter
and sculptress who worked in Florence, Italy. His family
fled to Italy during WWII and were among a group of highly
educated Germans who were interned there. Erich served in
the British Forces between 1941 and 1949 and then studied
medicine and ethnology in Munich. He became a well-known
ethnologist in Munich.

The fascinating part of the essay on pg 113 was the
statement, in loose translation. "The brother of my great,
great grandmother, Jakob Assur CAHEN, went >from Schopfloch,
the denied birthplace of Sara Bernhardt, to Paris where he
joined the newly formed Foreign Legion in 1832. He rose in
rank to Captain. In front of me lays a document signed by
Isabella II of Spain in which she graciously awards to the
Teniente Don Jacobo Cahen the order of the Heilige Ferdinand
1st Class for bravery in the battles at Segur in Catalonia
on November 16, 1835. He was loaned with his regiment to
the Spanish queen for the war against the Karlisten."

It is obvious to me that the Osser Jakob in both stories are
the same person and that Erich ORTENAU's great, great,
grandmother was the sister to my ancestor Dr. Moritz
MANNHEIMER. Until now, I had no information on any of the
female members of his family. In searching the internet, I
found Ortenau has a grand-niece Elke SISCO who has a weblog
but I have not been able to get in touch with her.

In researching the Matrikel records, I found two ORTENAUs in
Fuerth. One page even had Isaac Mannheimer (Matrikel #304)
b: 1772 whose Matrikel number went to Wilhelm Cohn in 1835.
Matrikel #306 is David Ottensosser ORTENAU (B: 1792).
There was another Ortenau in Fuerth: Daniel Ottensooser
ORTENAU (b: 1790). It may not be correct to assume one of
the Mannheimers sisters married an ORTENAU in Moritz's
generation, the connection might come >from a different
branch of Erich ORTENAU's ancestors. My hunch is that the
connection is on the ORTENAU side. Obviously those letters
in the trunk are a treasure trove of information...but where
are they? Any ideas on how to locate them?

If anyone has any information on either of these families, I
would appreciate hearing >from you. If you have suggestions
on how to proceed, that would also be appreciated. Thanks.

There was a message I posted about a year ago regarding the MANY available
sources in New York mostly for people doing Yiddish Theater and Vaudeville
research. I have not had a chance to search for and cite the exact date but
there is alot out there.

in several of Mr. White's Broadway Scandals and were very distant cousins to
my mother.
