Cemeteries in Cape Town

If you read my message correctly you will see that I wrote this particular message, after having "made assumptions on a few occasions" - because there was an article in the English press in Israel last week which caught my eye, in which Cemeteries and Synagogues incorrectly facing Jerusalem >from the rest of the world was mentioned. from S.A. it would be North East, and depending on which part of the world you are in, this fact is reliant on the geographic situation of each country in proportion to Jerusalem. I hope this solves the query to members who think I am making unecessary assumptions >from time to time. Beryl Baleson Israel.

hat1946@...
I am searching to any information on my grandmother
Hattie CONNERS (CONNORS) I have a playbill >from the Lyric Theater in Dayton Ohio dated Nov. 30, 1910 stating coming next week M. Golden the famous producer of dances peculiar to the land of the Czar is opening his new production etc. (It gives a the production story line) My grandmother Hattie Conners (she was a singer and dancer) is pictured with Mr. M. Golden. I also have a letter >from Aronson & Backer addressed to Hattie stating that she should report to the Broadway Theater for a production that will open in the 2nd week of August 1911 she will be joining the company of Lewis Fields etc. Yet with all my research (at the NY Public Library of Performing Arts) I can find nothing. I have search for M. Golden, I have searched for a show in Aug. with Fields and have hit that brick wall. Would appreciate any assistance in trying to locate any infO. Thank You Hattie Berman-Murphy New York City.

Yiddish >from 1934, I encountered the town or Shetel called Mepil in Lithuania. Does anyone know of this town and can give me some reference to it.>> A good guess would be Memil. Confirming the address of a business
#unitedkingdom
Hazel Dakers
The many suggestions about Cornwall Road prompt me to remind members of the
wealth of information to be found in business directories. Good reference libraries tend to have them. Local studies libraries usually have a selection of old ones. Leading libraries & county archives will almost certainly have a wide range. In the BL you can look at cities and at counties - or parts of London. Some very old ones are on the web www.historicaldirectories.org <http://www.historicaldirectories.org/> . These are a selection and give you a taste of what can be found in hard copy elsewhere. To the mid C20th at least it was very usual for small and medium sized businesses to be listed in these directories. I have used them to locate the whereabouts of family a century earlier. Hazel Dakers, London UK Researching: NORDEN (London & South Africa); HEIMANN (Luegde, Germany and South Africa); GOLD (Zgierz and Lodz, Poland), BIRNBAUM (Zgierz and Lodz, Poland)

Searching NATHAN - 3 Primrose Street, Bishopsgate Circa 1840
#unitedkingdom
sam_m@...
Dear All,
I would like to resolve two questions on my GG Grandma=92s line. She, = Fanny NATHAN, shows on her MC that her father was one Benjamin NATHAN (Cigar Maker) and her Mother Rachel NATHAN born Bishopsgate, East London. = Having found her mother in the 1861 Census I find that Rachel was widow running = a coffee and chop house in Coventry Street just off Leicester Sq. On = Fanny=92s BC however, her father is listed as one Joseph NATHAN, Commercial = Traveller. They were married, that is clear >from the listing. Rachel lists her = maiden name as NEWTON. Having searched records back through 1837 I need some = help in finding out where Rachel and Joseph/Benjamin might have been married = =96 this may help me understand firstly if Rachel=92s line was Jewish and = secondly if she married Joseph or Benjamin. The family lived at 3 Primrose = Street, Bishopsgate in 1840, the year of Fanny=92s birth.=20 =A0 Lastly I may have found Rachel=92s burial place but the date of death is listed as 26-Adar-5683? Is this a Jewish reckoning that relates to a different date format I might be able to check her age at death from? =A0 Thanks for any help, =A0 Samuel MOORE Australia sam_m@executivecentres.com.au

Fieldgate Street
#unitedkingdom
Derek & Rosemary Wenzerul <dandr@...>
Hi
I have only just come in on this discussion. I have a copy of the London 1891 census and have just looked up the details for you. The disc is: Disc.21. Bethnal Green, St. George and Whitechapel. RG12/269-284. The section you require is: R12-0281 - 18. First of all I looked up the name Grodzinski in the name index but nothing came up - the nearest was Grodski and they didn't live in Fieldgate Street. I then looked up the street index and that gave the above reference. It seems that in 1891 the numbers were 9,10,11 and not 29,30,31 but unfortunately there was nobody by the name of Grodzinski living at these numbers. No. 9 looked like Rosenfeld, with Bernstein as a lodger, No. 10 very difficult to read could be Buberuol with Michaels as a servant and Greenbaum as a lodger and No. 11 was the same as No. 10. 29,30,31 only appeared in Fieldgate Street Buildings and not as separate house entries and again not Grodzinski. Strangely enough, in 1922, my grandfather owned the Kings Arms Public House at 32 Fieldgate Street, but on the 1891 census it is shown as No. 16 Fieldgate Street. Sorry not to be of help.
