help finding an address in 1910 census
#general
Jenni Hymoff Koeppel
Hello again.
One question leads to another. Thanks to all of you who answered my query from yesterday: One of you actually managed to find a marriage listing formy ggp and a death record for an unknown "Lena" who might be yet another mystery sister to the mysterious Rachel.Could somebody look at the 1910 census for Suffolk County, MA, and see who lived at 102 Everett Avenue? My ggp's were there in 1900, but in the 1910 census I only found my ggf in Rutland Sanatorium and didn't think to look at the address the family lived at in 1900 when I had access to it. That information could help me discover if two people were still alive then. Or if there are even more mystery people around. I live in Spain, on the Canary Islands and the nearest FHC is in Seville, almost 1000 km away, and there are no library lookups here. There isn't even a library in the town I live in. Thanks for all your help, support and generosity! Jenni Hymoff Canary Islands, Spain researching KADETSKY and HYMOFF, Poland and Boston and REDLER, GAL and KRAVETSKY, Ukraine, Ra'anana, Minnesota and Boston

Leivik - a Hebrew name?
#general
Rochelle Gershenow
My father, born in the US, listed his Hebrew name as Leivik on a document.
I have been been unable to determine if this is truly a Hebrew name. His English name is Leo. I believe his Yiddish name may have been Leibl. His parents emigrated >from the Ukraine. I would appreciate getting an opinion on the name >from anyone knowledgeable about given names among Jews. Rochelle Gershenow Potomac, Maryland Searching: AGINSKY (Belarus; South Africa, USA); CHAIKIN (Priluki, Ukraine); GADISH/GAIDASH/GERIS (Belarus); LECKERMAN/LAKERMAN (Priluki, Ukraine; or Pennsylvania, USA); LIFSCHITZ (Priluki,Ukraine); PURINSON/PURINZON/PURRINSON Priluki,Ukraine; Argentina; Israel; USA); SLONIMSKY (Minsk, Belarus)or SLONIM (USA); SONDEK/SUNDOCK/SUNDACK (Lutzin, Belarus; Ludza, Latvia; USA); SOKOLOFF (Priluki, Ukraine)

GundR.Reuther@...
Dear friends of GerSig and jcr-uk!
I was searching for Lily FULD and I found her by your help! It was like a great puzzle! Many hints of yours helped me to find out her son and herself. In Germany nobody remembered the families BAER-SANDER-FULD-ABELES >from Frankfurt I was looking for. At the "Hessische Hauptstaatsarchiv" of Wiesbaden I was told her first name and where she lived after war. So I described to the discussion-group of Great Britain, too. Step by step I was helped. It would be too much, to tell everything. But many, many hints were helpful! I try to answer everybody but it could be I don't find every e-mail. Once I was sad as I thought, I wouldn't get on, one lady consoled me: "Don't give up!" Indeed! Thank you for this, I don't find your mail anymore! I was searching for descendants of Friedrich Moritz ABELES, too. I got helpful hints. Having found the family of Lily Fuld I am connected to ABELES, too. Now I'm going to find out how to contribute to jewishGen. Great thanks to all of you Rosl Reuther, Coburg gundr.reuther@t-online.de

re: caf=E9 Sztuka and Braun family members
Thank you to those who were kind enough to reply to my query. I am using a new e-mail program, and for some reason, I missed until today, all your helpful hints. Please don't hesitate to let me know of any others you may find, too. I will have to review all the digests, but in the meantime, I wanted to answer Kris, first.... From: Warszawa Research Group digest <warszawa@lyris.jewishgen.org> You will find more Polish directories online at the Library of Congress11001 wapage.db)=2012 Zielna Street (warehouses) and at 122 Radzyminska Street. Herman Braun's I hope some of this will be of help.--=20 Yes Kris, Much of this is very helpful. I already know about the Music of Rembrance group. Pola's poems were not "unpublished," but rather appeared in a book c. 1946 or 7 in Poland. Also, a researcher of Szlengel tells me that she rescued two of Pola's poems. These surviving six poems were not "published" in English, however. However, the website features a number of articles about the premiere, "Letter to Warsaw," without updating either journalists or readers that muc= h more information was located about Pola, and that the closest surviving relative (my father) was discovered last year. It was through his help tha= t a great of deal of new material was recovered very recently. Unfortunately, we've learned the very painful way that not everyone who works in the field of Holocaust studies chooses to pay homage to victims an= d survivors alike. Sometimes, things are just done for personal aggrandizement, such as what this group did, or didn't do. When you get the recording, you'll find in the notes that the music was not dedicated to Pola or any or her colleagues or victims of the Holocaust, and some of the sources of information upon further digging were not credited. We'll leave it at that, although I understand Maria von Trapp (of "Sound of Music" fame) was not even sent an invite to the premiere of the film, and did not receive a sou of the royalties (give or take the latter)..... Of course as an academic, independent researcher and a descendant of Pola, = I plan to keep records of collected resources, credit citations, and acknowledge people who have been helpful during the course of this work. I looked through the Polish Business Directory and couldn't find anything, but I was looking in Grodno, rather than Bialystok. I will look, anew. Thanks! I was wondering about the things you found in the Library of Congress website, and how you were able to find the index. I did find Herman and Hermanowa Braun on image 87, but I couldn't determine where to view the businesses addresses you were able to locate. I'd very much appreciate it, if you could tell me how to run searches through these digital materials, as I was not able to bring up the .pdf version. =20 My grandfather was a tailor and/or owned a fabric shop in Warsaw c. 1937-9. His last name was Braun, first Noach or Noah. Thanks so much for the Leszno address of the caf=E9. No one ever told me it before, and how delightful to finally see a photo of the outside (at least!). Best wishes and many thanks

Re: Deciphering handwriting on Viewmate (More Suggestions)

Hi. In addition to Ira Leviton's suggestion of including more of a page to gauge the handwriting, perhaps it would help to include a link and/or information to allow others to view the entire page of the document (with the assumption that viewing the document is at no charge). If the link to the document is long, and therefore liable to be made unusable once it is folded, spindled and mutilated via e-mail, use http://tinyurl.com/ to create a smaller, more manageable link. All you do is paste the long web address into the box and press the "Make Tiny URL!" button. You will then receive a much smaller link to the large one you pasted in. Some of the handwriting is not as difficult once one is able to recognize the writing style based on other writing on the manifest. For example, sometimes the letter "z" was written in cursive similar to how we print it, rather than the descending "z" that most people use today. The most legible manifests I have seen are those from ships leaving England....they must have used some nice and flexible pen nibs! There are other references on the net for helping to decipher various styles of handwriting. (Most of what I have found so far refers to "American" style rather than European styles.) Best of luck to you all, Henoch DUBOFF -- Researching: FAERSTEIN, TICKNER; (Skalo - Austria); MAILSHANKER/MELSZENKER (Grading/Gorodok Podol. and Buenos Aires - Argentina); OBLETZ, ROSOFF (Dokshytz - Belarus) ; FINN (Gluboko - Vilna); RAFKIN/RAVKIN (Dwinsk - Russia); ZEMBLE (Lushnitz - Russia);DUBOWY (Zalocie - Austria)
