SMITH: Russia to Detroit #general

Roland Tompowsky <roland.tompowsky@...>

Dear Genners!

It seems like an impossibility to find any specific person with the name
SMITH. But I have the problerm and might help. Anyone maybe knows about the
family and about any living descendant of them, please give me a tip or a
name!
The family is:
Louis Smith b. ab. 1867 in Russia and his wife Dora - maiden name not
known - b. ab. 1870 in Russia;
Their children who lived with the parents in 92 Erskine Street, Detroit,
Wayne, Michigan, USA in the year 1920 according to US Federal c. that year.
Morton Smith b. 1895
Zelda Smith b. 1897
Bernie Smith b. 1901
Abe Smith b. 1903
David Smith b. 1909
Irving smith b. 1913
and Gertrude Smith b. 1911 inmarried in my family 1930 to Isadore HARRISON
TUMPEER (TUMPOWSKY).
Gertrude became a widow already 1939 and left a daughter >from the marriage
named Pera Lee Tumpeer - her first name seem a little uncommon, and as her
maternal grandmother was named Dora - it would not surprice that the name
rather should be Dora Lee, but this last is just a guess.
Anyone who knows about the family or their descendants and especially Pera
(Dora) Lee Tumpeer and her future, please send me a message to my
emailaddresse.

Alert on State Legislation Impacting Genealogists- New Hampshire and New Jersey #general

jan meisels allen <janmallen@...>

Dear Jewish Genners:

The IAJGS Public Records Monitoring and Access Committee monitors
legislation that impacts access to vital genealogical records (birth,
marriage, death) and census. In that vein I am informing you of several
egregious bills recently introduced in New Hampshire and New Jersey.

I. New Hampshire- HB 1382 prohibits a public or private entity >from using
non-public personal information about an individual for any reason without
the individuals' consent. The bill defines the term "individual" to mean a
human being, including a deceased human being. As drafted the bill would
prevent organizations, such as Ancestry.com and other data collection
organizations >from obtaining information on a deceased person, unless that
person had given their approval. Another concern we have, if the bill is
enacted as currently written, some state and local government employees may
preclude individuals >from obtaining copies of information (birth, marriage
or death records) on someone who is dead as the deceased had not given their
approval.

The genealogical community, as represented on the FGS/NGS Records
Preservation and Access Committee, --- IAJGS serves on the committee, is
taking the position of "support if amended". The amendment we are trying to
achieve is the removal of "deceased human being" >from the definition of
"individual" in the bill.

The first hearing is scheduled in the Judiciary Committee of the New
Hampshire House of Representatives on January 31, 2006 at 10 AM.

You may read the bill by going to:
http://gencourt.state.nh.us/legislation/2006/HB1382.html

2. New Jersey AB 1390 (2005 session it was AB 3806). This bill removes vital
records (birth, marriage, domestic partnership and
death records) >from the definition of public records, thereby making access
to such records very difficult, if not impossible. The bill has been
assigned to the Assembly Homeland Security and State Preparedness
Committee-the committee members are not yet announced per the legislative
website.

The bill needs to be amended to permit copies of such records for
genealogists. Efforts to get time limits on the confidentiality of birth
records (100 years), marriage records ( 60 years) and death records (40
years) in the bill do not appear to be successful as yet.

The bill can be accessed at the New Jersey Legislature's website:
http://www.njleg.state.nj.us/2006/Bills/A1500/1390_I1.PDF

Both bills cited above are PDF files, therefore, to read them it is
necessary to install Adobe Acrobat Reader on your computer which is
available for free by accessing the site at:
http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readermain.html.

If you have any questions about the above, please contact me.

Dear Genners,
I am a bit puzzled and don't have Steve Cohen's original message, but
if I remember, Steve, you have the naturalization certificate. If you
have that it should give the court where the naturaliztion took place
and you should be able to get the full record >from that court. I have
never gotten anything >from the INS despite a number of attempts.

US Federal Census for Orphanages #general

Adelle Gloger

Dear Genners,

Every now and then a message is posted about a child appearing on a US
Federal Census with his / her family, and then sort of disappears in
subsequent census years. Often it is thought that the child died, but
there is no record of this event. A thought occurred to me that perhaps
the child was placed in an orphanage because of circumstances within
the family. The orphanage could be several hundred or even thousand
miles >from where the family resided.

I have in my posession the census for several Jewish Orphan Homes in
Cleveland, Ohio for the years 1910,1920 and 1930. I also have one for 1880.

These children and infants were not only >from Cleveland, but >from all
over the USA. I would be willing to look-up names of children who have
"disappeared." It would be of help to know where the child was born, the
approximate age, and where the parents were born.

BLAS/BLASS Family from Bardejov,Slovakia #general

Dear H-Siggers and Genners
I recently discovered at The Auschwitz Museum website
a certain
Hermann KOENIGSBUCH(1912-1942) who was born in
Michalovce. KOENIGSBUCH is a unique surname, all it's
bearers hail >from Brzesko,Poland. My mother's maiden
name was KOENIGSBUCH.
I saw at Michalovce's Yizkor book reference to
KOENIGSBUCH.
About a month ago I learned that at the Michalovce
cemetery there is a grave of Chaya ,daughter of Isser
and the wife of Joseph KOENIGSBUCH. She died in 1934.
3 days ago I found at Yad VaShem Pages of Testimony
that Hermann KOENIGSBUCH's parents were Joseph K. and
Helene BLAS.
Joseph is probably the brother of my grandfather,Ascher K.
I have no idea where this BLAS family hails from.
There is no mention of them at the Michalovce Yizkor
book so I assue that she was >from somewhere else.
But I browsed today through the Bardejov Yizkor book
because my late father in law,David Apotheker was born
there.By sheer chance I saw there a the name of a
certain Israel Isser BLAS(p. 89).I checked quickly at
Yad Vashem and found 1 PoT for Adela
BLASS >from Bardejov.
I just wonder whether any one on the list with
Bardejov roots can enlighten me about this family?

Johann Henrich KLEIN 1704 #general

I am looking for information on:

Johann Henrich KLEIN
born:1704 in Zweibrucken, Germany
married to: Anna Margaretha GRIMM on 10/23/1729 in Kussel, Zweibrucken,
Germany
died: 1810 in Adams, Pennsylvania

They had eight children:

Capt. Daniel LITTLE born 1731 in Kussel, Zweibrucken, Germany (my ancestor)
Johann Peter Little born 9/16/1734 in Kussel, Zweibrucken, Germany
3 unknown Littles born about 1736/1740/1742
Mary Little born about 1744
Jacob Klein born about 1746
David Little born about 1748
Henry Little born about 1750

The parents carried the Klein name but it seems they changed all but one of
the children's names, maybe when they came to Pennsylvania? Any information
would be appreciated, I don't know if they are Jewish.
Thank you,
