Superstitions #lithuania

Eileen Douglas Israel <faithdouglas@...>

Dear Litvak/SIGers,

Reading up after being away, I delighted in the rundown on Jewish
superstitions. Especially striking a nerve, I remember, too, being made to
chew on a piece of thread when my grandmother would sew a hem on a dress or
skirt I was wearing. But I was told the reason was so she wouldn't sew up my
brains. Naturally, I thought this was ridiculous. And, naturally, I
nevertheless did what I was told and chewed away. Never realizing anyone
else's grandmother was making them do the same thing.
Also, though it may not be relevant, I am a Litvak because of my
grandfather, not my grandmother, who was >from Romania.
Thanks for re-jolting a long lost childhood memory.

double listing n 1898 revision lists #lithuania

David Shapiro <ddshapiro@...>

Berel SHAPIRA son of David was a relative of mine. I find him and his
family in the ALD listed twice in the 1898 revision lists.

They are listed in Krekanova Volost under "families living out of town,
1st stan." with a comment "Registered in Panevezys; lives in
Mingeliany since birth".

The same family (with a few more older children and with the parents
and some of the children six years younger, but others the same age
as in the Krekanova list) are listed in Troskunai in the same year
under "additional family list".

Can anyone explain why they are listed twice, and the discrepancies.
Where is Mingeliany? It doesn't show up in the Shtetl-seeker.
Incidentally I know that one of Berel's daughters lived in Krekanova
after her marriage. Finally, can anyone suggest how I can find more
information of Berel's place of birth and on his father, David's, family?
I am descended >from David's sister (name unknown) who married
Kalman Zalkind SHMULEVITZ.

Many thanks,

David Shapiro

Hello everyone,
I'm getting together an order of vital records. Since I've never seen an
AGAD death record, I was wondering what information can be found in them.
There are a few records that are stabs in the dark for me and before I order
any, I just wanted to know what they may offer. Can someone give me a basic
idea of the information contained in them? Thanks.

Phillips Family formerly Filipowsky #poland

Kevin Caughlan <caughlan@...>

I am still searching for any descendants of Isaac/Itchie Phillips, born
Filipowski in Suwalki, Russia/Poland around 1876 or 76. Itchie and wife
Sarah (Gittel) came to the U.S., he in 1903 and she and their two oldest
children Jennie (b. 1902 and Sam (Schmiel) b. c. 1903) came in 1905.
Itchie and Sarah then had Ida, Fannie, Dora, David and Lawrence Phillips.
Jennie married Irwin Pintel in 1927 and they had one daughter Beverly born
around 1928. Jennie was called Jeanette on her marriage license. Jeanette
died in 1951. Dora (born around 1909-10) married Louis P. Licht in 1933.
She was also called Gussie and Dorothy. David married Sarah and they had a
daughter Marilyn Phillips. She is listed as an "infant" on David's will
when he died in 1963. David's sister Dorothy Licht, the executor, had also
died according to the document. She lived in Little Neck, NY. I don't know
if Larry Phillips, Ida Phillips, Fannie Phillips or Sam Phillips ever
married, so I am asking everyone's help. If they know any Phillipses from
Russia/Poland, could they ask if they are related to Uncle Itchie? Thanks,

Jenny Caughlan, Kensington, MD

Uyezd: Sipusheny? Onpushsky? Olpushena?
City: Oipusha? Onpusha? Olpusha?

I've concluded that it was the City of Olkusz in Opulski Uyezd and Kielce
Gubernia.

Does anyone have any other suggestions or would you come to the same
conclusion?

As usual, I thank you very much in advance for your help.

Have a lovely week.
Appears to be correct, Linda.

There is a bit of a play with the Russian grammar.
Town Olkusz, Uyezd Olkusz, Kielce Guberniya.

BTW, Olkusz was a district (powiat) town and was located also within Kielce
Province (Wojewodztwo) during independent Poland interwar period.

How do I contact the Submitter of Pages of Testomy? #general

Julian Peerutin <jushilli@...>

Shalom

I saw a page of testomy submitted to the Yad Vashem Holocaust database in
1956. Is there any way of knowing how to contact the submitter?
The Pages of Testomy in question were submitted by Batsheva Shulman for
Moshe Cindelis, Faiga Cindeliene, Shlomo Cindelis, Judit Cindel and Chaim

Does anyone know of Baysheva Shulman and how to contact her?

Thanks

Hello All

I'm trying to find the correct spelling and exact location for a pre-war

When I heard the name, it sounded like Yar Ochinski and was located on
Pomorska Street. If anyone knows the shul's correct name, spelling and
address, please email me privately. Or if you have research advice or
general information the rest of the group can use, please post for all.

Additional information such the shul's history, if photos survived or are
