ViewMate Photo Identification -- My Uncle's Uniform #galicia

Mark Halpern

I have uploaded a photo to ViewMate, with the hope that some kind person
will be able to identify the uniform in the photo. I would like to know
anything about the uniform, but especially want to know which country's
uniform this was.

This is the 1921 Polish passport photo of my Uncle, Abraham Halpern, who
lived in a small Galician village near Tarnopol. The photo can be viewed
directly at
http://data.jewishgen.org/viewmate/ALL/viewmateview.asp?key=7240 or by
going to http://data.jewishgen.org/viewmate/ALL/index.asp and scrolling
down to VM 7240.

Your help will be greatly appreciated and please respond privately.

Happy Hanukkah to all.

VM7243/5 - Thank you (translation from Romanian into English) #general

Martin Fischer

Thanks very much to all of those >from the JewishGen mailing list who have
translated >from Romanian into English the letters I recently posted to
ViewMate.
How strange that they include a note saying the correspondence was written
in 1905 but not mailed until more than two years later!

Budapest 1950's sources #general

Omri Arnon <omri@...>

Dear group,

I wonder if there are any information sources you know about in Hungary,
specifically in Budapest, that can help me trace a relative whose details I
found in the Neveklarsfeld survivors list. I am trying to find the living
relatives of ERDOS Gabor, son of Dr. Erdos Josef (son of Erdos Ignacz and
REINITZ Rosa) and Margit BARCZA. Finding his descendants would help me
immensely in solving a difficult piece in the puzzle. His record details
are:
Record Number 1062637
Registrant's Family Name ERDOS
Registrant's First Name GABOR
Gender M
Date of Birth 1922
Place of Birth Budapest
Mother's Family Name BARCA
Mother's First Name Margit
Address Street Horthy Miklos
Address Number 35

Any help would be appreciated.

Social Security Application #general

Joel Weintraub <jweintraub@...>

There was a recent inquiry about attaining the Social Security Application
form (SS-5) of a relative. A recent posting on the New York board of
Rootsweb indicates a change in what you can expect for your application fee.
I do not know the accuracy of the posting. See:

The above is a single address... if it appears as two lines on your screen
make sure you have the entire address if you try to go to this link.

Actually, the TSETISHKA family was originally >from Pandelys and probably
came to Rokiskis when they married there.

Also, a Rajza Kark is mentioned in a newly translated chapter of the
Rokiskis Yizkor Book which can be found on JewishGen's Yizkor Book Site.

Different Goldbergs in Praetoria! #southafrica

Saul Marks <saulmarks@...>

Dear Jules,

Believe it or not, I'm also looking for Goldbergs in Praetoria, but
different ones.

Ronald Bernard (aka Ronnie) Goldberg was born in London in 1933 & married
lounge singer Eva Bart. They had two sons, Keith G Goldberg & Sean Goldberg.
Ronnie & Eva divorced in the 1970s, & Eva & the boys moved to Praetoria.
Ronnie died in 1980 in London. Contact with Eva, Keith & Sean was lost soon
after they emigrated, & I've yet to find them. My guess is that Keith & Sean
would be around 45 now, & they may have moved around within South Africa or
even re-emigrated. I know Eva was well-known in some circles in London
through her work as a singer & may have continued her work in South Africa.
She would be about 70 now.

Ronnie Goldberg's father was born in Lodz, Poland, c.1904, but his parents
brought him to London c.1905, where they settled. My Goldberg ancestry was
in Lodz >from the 1870s, and in the shtetl of Grocholice (29 miles south of
Lodz) prior to that.

As you can see, my Goldbergs are definitely a different family >from yours,
but do please let me know if you run into them on your searches.

Everything is Illuminated #general

Ben Forman <ben.forman@...>

Hi Guys

If any of you have the opportuity to see the film Everything is
Illuminated over the holiday period (or any other time!!) I can
recommend it very highly. I saw it last night, and thought it was a
brilliant film, I went with my girlfriend and mum and they both thought
it was great, but I have to say I think for genealogists the first half
of the film is hilarious.
The film is about the journey of Jonathan, a young amercian jew - an
obsessive collector of family memorabilia - who travels to the "old
country" to solve the mystery surrounding a photograph of his
grandfather taken before the war. Jonathan's guides on the journey are
Alex,a young Russian with a command of english and understanding of
america that comes >from old books and MTV respectively, Alex's
grandfather and their dog. Together the dysfunctional group travel
around the Odessan countryside looking for Jonathan's ancestoral
Schtetl.
It is funny, and very moving movie, and on both levels, you think how
close any of us or our relatives could be and were to all of the
characters in the movie.

anyway have a good holiday season
