Roll 3324, Frames 392-399 it looks like Q.E. might stand for Ex Quota and 1230 is the time of day of the Inquiry. In the 1920's immigration quotas were established for each country, so many per year and so many per month. The quota for your G-mother's country may have been exceeded for the month of July. Richard Gilbert could try the Manchester Jewish Museum which has a website.
I went there in the summer and it has some useful documentary evidence. Also Bill Williams' books about the Jews of Manchester (and other authors along the same vein) which are available on the 2nd hand and antiquary book websites such as xx Jill Whitehead Researching Abrahams/Abrams of Manchester MODERATOR NOTE: In accordance with the policy of JewishGen the name of the bookseller has been removed.

In his Jan.7 2006 message to this group, Elliot Fishman said that his
grandmother came >from Ratno and his grandfather >from Volochisk. I can offer him no information about either grandparent, but as for data on his towns, I want to call his attention to Jewishgen's Ratno Hizkor book at: http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/pinkas_poland/pol5_00187b.html Also, Mr. Fishman has somehow gotten the impression that Volochisk is now called "Wolinsk." This impression is erroneous. "Wolinsk" is another version of Volhynia, the province in which Volochisk is located. See: http://www.shtetlinks.jewishgen.org/Volochisk/Volochisk.html Also, there is a Volochisk message group to which Mr. Fishman may want to subscribe at: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Vololchiskans/ Lately the Volochiskan group has not been very active, but I have particpated in it occasionally because I have distant relatives who lived accross the Zbruch river in Podvolochisk. SOLOMON SEARCH
Diane I understand your problem as I am in Australia too. Have you tried www.oldbaileyonline? I found a number of my relatives giving evidence in trials and it helped me to solve many puzzles that I thought would never be solved. Another great source is The Times - it is on line at the State Library Victoria and I guess it would be at Sydney as well. Have you found anyone else in Australia researching Solomon families. I have done quite a bit of research on one Solomon family of London and Melbourne and would be happy to share information with you.
