Hi,
My grandfather, Arthur Steckerl was in the Army in WW1 and died in 1916 and
is buried at the Zentralfriedhof cemetery in Vienna. How do I find
information about him...what rank,if any and where was he when he died and
if this was a full job, or he another profession and when the war broke out,
he was drafted??? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Andrew, I appreciate the information about the field hospital at Kiev (you
never know which piece of the puzzle will fit in).

However, I believe my grandfather Antal Linhardt was taken to a hospital
nearer to Voronezh because he was an influential member of the Social Democrat
Party (SZDP) and would have been courted by the Soviets

My theory is that the Nazi labor camp at Davidovka where Olympic fencer
Atille Petschauer died was converted to a Soviet Hospital. Atille Petschauer was
in the 101/28 Forced-labor company. Does anyone know about the 101/28?

grandfather was taken to a field hospital at the Front (although it is

According to the book Fekete konyu by Eugene Levai, Hungarians in exile in
Moscow (Mihaly Farkas, Erno Gero, Bela Illes, and Zoltan Vas) arranged for
POWs taken by the Soviets to be cared for at the Davidovka Hospital in the
Ukraine.

There are several places in the Ukraine called Davidovka, but I believe
this
to be at long. 51' 10", lat. 39' 26"

I noticed that Hungarian Olympic fencing athlete, Attila Petschauer, whose
death was depicted in the movie Sunshine, died in Nazi labor camp at
Davidovka, Ukraine.

I am wondering if this is the same Davidovka and if the Soviet's took over
the Nazi labor camp and converted it to a field hospital and/or POW camp.

Does anyone have any information or suggestions on the Davidovka Hospital
or
Labor Camp?

I have been searching for UK Merchant Marine archives information for th=
e pasts 20 years as time permitted. Now at age 81, time isn't permittin=
g more dilly-dallying if I'm to complete my fathers family history. My
last information on my grandfather, Edward Rosenbloom is as a widower on
the 1901 census at 47 Three Colt Street, Limehouse. At that time he had
two dependents; son, Frank (14) and daughter, Louise (9). He was liste
d as retired and in business as a stationer (which I'm assuming is an En
glish name for newspaper distributor?) During my grandfather's active d
uty as a Captain (?) with the Merchant Marine my grandmother lived at 47
Woolmore Street, Tower Hamlets, Mile End Old Town, London, Middlesex,
England, and her occupation also was listed as stationer. I know that m
y father and his brothers all worked delivering newspapers in their yout
h, so it seems to be a logical conclusion. I really would appreciate an
y clues to finding any information on my grandfather's Merchant Marine h
istory. I know that he was gone most of the time during the period from
1870 to the late 1890's.

Thanks for any help you can give.

In any event, it gives the researcher another place to search for records.

Name Yevno (Evno) -- could it be Yonah? #general

Cyndee Meystel <cmeys@...>

I have found a listing in one of the Lithuanian Databases recently put on
line that shows what might be one of my husband's ancestors.

It lists the man's (head of household) first name as Evno which I have been
told corresponds to the Yiddish name Yevno (I have never heard of Yevno as a
Yiddish name and am very familiar with Yiddish and Hebrew names).

The person I am looking for was named Yonah. Could Yevno be Yonah?

Other data (name of a child and sexes of children as well as ages and dates)
leads to this being the person I am looking for.

Does anyone have any additional information on the name Yevno/Evno?

Thank you.

I'd like to thank everyone who responded to my inquiry about 27 Pitt
Street. Who knew that there was so much information? All was much
appreciated.

For anyone who is doing similar research, I'd like to send several URLs.
While this topic has been discussed before, the city of New York has
reorganized their website, and some of the old URLs for building
information and property taxes are no longer active.

For building information (alterations and permits, going back to the
late 19th century):

For property tax information, going back to 1966:
