re equivalent names #lithuania

Margaret Fullarton and David Mark <fullmark@...>

Well, you haven't failed me yet so here is another query!
We have all these weird first names in our family for which I cannot
find the Jewish equivalent and they are not even western names really so
I wonder does anybody, particularly in the UK know what they replace?
e.g. My father in law's name is Leslie and his Jewish name is Laizer,
his brother is Bernard and he has cousins too with this name but it is
more Catholic than the Pope so where does this come from?

Bernard
Harris
Barnet(t)
Fanny
Ralph
Ellis
Ettie
Netta
Rose
Lily
Bertha
Bessie

I'd be obliged - the given name index has helped me out with a few but
these I cannot find and therefore I cannot look them up in the
databases.

Thankyou
Margaret Fullarton Mark

Maiden name of Chana Chaimovitz wife of Chain Tvi of Krekenava. #lithuania

<From: Anita Fischer anitwal@videotron.ca
<I am trying to search the Lithuanian Internal Passports Database but
<seem to be going in circles. I have found my grandfather in several
<databases but never his wife listed nor her maiden name. Is there a
<data base only for Internal Passports?

It would be helpful if Anita could clarify her question. She states
that she has found her grandfather in several databases and, at the
same time, asks if there is a data base only for Internal Passports.
There are many databases pertaining to Lithuania on Jewishgen in
addition to the Internal Passport Database, i.e., the LitvakSIG
All Lithuania Database (ALD), the Jewishgen Lithuania Vital Records
Database, just to name a few.

It will be awhile before the Krekenava internal passport files will
be translated, if they exist. Chaim and his wife may have applied for
their internal passport in some other town in Lithuania other than
Krekenava.

Jewish companies in Slovakia #austria-czech

Jan Hellmann <jan@...>

I suppose that Slovakia being part of Austria - Hungary is inside of
frame of our group interrest. In this connection, I wish to inform that this
month the Slovakian government had open a new web side concerning Jewish
companies liquidated in the period 1941-1942 - totally some 10.000 names.
The page is unfortunately in Slovakian only, however it is possible in
the frame "okres" to choose a city name and than go line by line.
Good hunt

Investigating: HELLMANN/EHRMANN/GUTH/HELLER

MODERATOR NOTES:
1 - Strictly speaking, Slovakia is not within the area
that AustriaCzech focuses on; it is dealt with at H-SIG, which may
be found at: http://www.jewishgen.org/Hungary/

2 - There is in fact an English version of the webpages - go to the
bottom of the homepage and click on the small link "english version".
It does not appear to have the same full functionality as the
Slovakian version.

ITKIN family #belarus

PETER ELMAN

I am researching Shlomo Simeon ITKIN, probably born a little before 1850,
from either Kovel (presumably Ukraine) or Vitebsk/Kolyshki. Most of the
later family seem to have come >from the Vitebsk family. Shlomo married a
Zipporah, possibly a YUDKIN. I know a fair amount about his children (one
of them married an ELMAN, my grandfather), but little about him and his
ancestors.

His father was Yaakov Aaron AGRINYONKA (perhaps various spellings), who had
two sons, Issachar (or Zachar) Agrinyonka, and Shlomo Simeon, who was
"loaned out" to another family, Itkin, to escape conscription (so family
word has it). Zachar married a Chayar KAHANOFF, whose brother was later to
marry one of Shlomo Simeon's children. Zachar had a daughter who married a
Mayer YERUCHAMOVICH. They have three children born between 1911 and 1917,
whose names I have and nothing more, nor anything more of their line.

Re: Using the British Pound Symbol #unitedkingdom

Windows assigns a numeric code for different accented foreign
characters and special mathematical symbols. The code for the
pound symbol is while holding the ALT key down type 0163, then
release the ALT key.
Using GBP (for Great British Pounds) is also ok.

In the US (perhaps other countries as well) there is a asii table that =
will
allow you to print symbols that are not included on your keypad. If you
hold the Alt down while typing 156 (then releasing Alt) you will see the =
=A3

produced by
Alt 186. =BA.

If anyone is interested, I'd be glad to send you my copy.
