Jewish companies in Slovakia #austria-czech

Jan Hellmann <jan@...>

I suppose that Slovakia being part of Austria - Hungary is inside of
frame of our group interrest. In this connection, I wish to inform that this
month the Slovakian government had open a new web side concerning Jewish
companies liquidated in the period 1941-1942 - totally some 10.000 names.
The page is unfortunately in Slovakian only, however it is possible in
the frame "okres" to choose a city name and than go line by line.
Good hunt
www.upn.gov.sk

Jan O. Hellmann/Denmark
Investigating: HELLMANN/EHRMANN/GUTH/HELLER

MODERATOR NOTES:
1 - Strictly speaking, Slovakia is not within the area
that AustriaCzech focuses on; it is dealt with at H-SIG, which may
be found at: http://www.jewishgen.org/Hungary/

2 - There is in fact an English version of the webpages - go to the
bottom of the homepage and click on the small link "english version".
It does not appear to have the same full functionality as the
Slovakian version.

ITKIN family #belarus

PETER ELMAN

I am researching Shlomo Simeon ITKIN, probably born a little before 1850,
from either Kovel (presumably Ukraine) or Vitebsk/Kolyshki. Most of the
later family seem to have come >from the Vitebsk family. Shlomo married a
Zipporah, possibly a YUDKIN. I know a fair amount about his children (one
of them married an ELMAN, my grandfather), but little about him and his
ancestors.

His father was Yaakov Aaron AGRINYONKA (perhaps various spellings), who had
two sons, Issachar (or Zachar) Agrinyonka, and Shlomo Simeon, who was
"loaned out" to another family, Itkin, to escape conscription (so family
word has it). Zachar married a Chayar KAHANOFF, whose brother was later to
marry one of Shlomo Simeon's children. Zachar had a daughter who married a
Mayer YERUCHAMOVICH. They have three children born between 1911 and 1917,
whose names I have and nothing more, nor anything more of their line.

Re: Using the British Pound Symbol #unitedkingdom

Windows assigns a numeric code for different accented foreign
characters and special mathematical symbols. The code for the
pound symbol is while holding the ALT key down type 0163, then
release the ALT key.
Using GBP (for Great British Pounds) is also ok.

In the US (perhaps other countries as well) there is a asii table that =
will
allow you to print symbols that are not included on your keypad. If you
hold the Alt down while typing 156 (then releasing Alt) you will see the =
=A3
symbol. Alt 155 produces the =A2 symbol and the degree symbol is =
produced by
Alt 186. =BA.

If anyone is interested, I'd be glad to send you my copy.

Khaim BERG from Vysokoye, Belarus who lives in Israel #belarus

Lee Nydell

I would like to thank everyone in Israel who assisted me in locating
Chaim Berg, who was born in Vysokoye, Belarus. Ella >from Israel was
able to locate his telephone number and speak to him on the telephone.
He unfortunately does not speak English or Hebrew and only a little
Yiddish. His main language is Russian.

His family does come >from Vysokoye and he indicated that "not many
Jews survived >from Vysokoye, he himself escaped to Russia, served in
the Red Army and after the war lived in Uzbekistan until his
emigration to Israel in 1990."

I would like to locate someone in Israel who speaks Russian and can
call Mr. Berg on the telephone. For Berg's privacy I will not post his
telephone number here.

Your help would be greatly appreciated.

International Institute for Jewish Genealogy Opens in Jerusalem #belarus

Gary Mokotoff- <mokotoff@...>

The International Institute for Jewish Genealogy and Paul Jacobi Center
opened this week. Located at the Jewish National and University Library at
Givat Ram, Jerusalem, the new Institute, a non-profit organization, has two
main aims: (1) to engage in Jewish genealogical research and teaching at the
university level and (2) to make Jewish Genealogy a recognized academic
discipline within the realm of Jewish Studies.

The Institute is the only one of its kind in the Jewish world. It plans to
operate on an interdisciplinary basis and also in a collaborative way with
organizations engaged in aspects of Jewish genealogy. It will put a premium
on innovative programs and projects of practical benefit to individual
family historians.

Its establishment is the result of efforts over the last two years of an
international Founding Committee, headed by Sallyann Sack, of Washington,
DC. and Yosef Lamdan of Israel. Lamdan, a former Israeli ambassador to the
Vatican, has been appointed as Director of the Institute.

One of its first projects is an academic symposium to be held in Jerusalem
in September with a view to setting research and teaching priorities for the
new Institute. Experts >from the academic and genealogical world will be
presenting papers.

Its e-mail address is info@IIJG.com.
