Cemeteries in Cape Town #southafrica

Colin Plen

When the first Jews came to South Africa, to the best of my knowledge, the
belief was still to design houses of prayer to face towards Jerusalem, as
they had prayed in der heim, so their houses of prayer faced East or South,
as they would have in Europe. Only later did they take into account that
Jerusalem is North >from South Africa and shuls were built accordingly
thereafter. Maybe this has something to do with the way the graves faced?

Colin Plen

I have asked this question on numerous
occasions and have not received a satisfactory
reply. Hopefully, this message will now bring the
answer for which I am looking.

All over the world the head of a Tombstone faces
Jerusalem, which means that Tombstones are one
next to the other in rows. In Pinelands cemetery in
particular, Tombstones are back to back. Therefore
not all heads of Tombstones are facing Jerusalem as is in Jewish
Tradition.

Is there a reason that Cape Town cemeteries are
different >from the norm?

Re: FULD - ABELES - Thank You! #germany

GundR.Reuther@...

Dear friends of GerSig and jcr-uk!

I was searching for Lily FULD and I found her by your help! It was like a
great puzzle! Many hints of yours helped me to find out her son and herself. In
Germany nobody remembered the families BAER - SANDER - FULD - ABELES
from Frankfurt I was looking for.
At the "Hessische Hauptstaatsarchiv" of Wiesbaden I was told
her first name and where she lived after war. So I described to the
discussion-group of Great Britain, too. Step by step I was helped. It would be
too much, to tell everything. But many, many hints were helpful! I try to answer
everybody but it could be I don't find every e-mail.

Once I was sad as I thought, I wouldn't get on, one lady consoled me: "Don't
give up!" Indeed! Thank you for this, I don't find your mail anymore!
I was searching for descendants of Friedrich Moritz ABELES, too. I got helpful
hints. Having found the family of Lily FULD I am connected to ABELES, too.
Now I'm going to find out how to contribute to JewishGen.

Excel VB expert needed #lithuania

Joel Ratner

The VRI project is in need of someone knowledgeable in writing Excel macros.
We have a simple task at hand right now that requires a macro to open a
defined set of files and which populates an output file with all the records
from the input files.
Anyone who is capable of coding a macro to perform this task should contact
me directly.

ROSNER From Krakow #general

Abuwasta Abuwasta

My name is Jacob Rosen >from Jerusalem. I am the son of
the late Leon Leib ROSNER (1903-1999) who was the youngest
child of Jakub Chiel Rosner and Ittla Borgenicht. My
father was convinced until his death that he was the
only survivor >from his family and barely spoke about
his brother and 4 sisters. He never mentioned their
given names or married names.
Last year I managed to find out that a son of my
father's siters,Channa,Reuven Orschutzer (b.1925)
survived and lives in Israel. He gave me the names of
the other siblings of my father. Following that I
discovered via Yad Vashem that the son of his brother
Abraham Meyer,Rudy (b.1920) survived as well and lives
in Florida. We reunited last year in Jerusalem (they
have not seen each other since 1938).

Now I have more or less the list of my father's
siblings:

1. Abraham Meyer b. 1890 in Gdow .Disappeared in the
USSR.

2. Channa Orschutzer b. 1894/5 in Gdow. Perished in
the Holocaust.

3. Erna /Esther Susskind b.1896? in Gdow .Perished in
the Holocaust.

4. Beila /Berta (surname unknown) b. 1897-9 married
and lived in Tarnow. Perished in the Holocaust
Mechla/ Michalina b.1901 in Dobczyce. Was a
Communist,married at a certain stage(surname unknown).
Disappeared in USSR.
5. Leon Leib b. 1903 in Dobczyce (my father).

My grandfather Jakub Chiel Rosner after whom I am
named was born in 1866 in Dabrowa Tarnowska to Rubin
Rosner and Malka
Perlberg. My grandfather moved around 1905 to Krakow
where he had a big storehouse of coal.
My two surviving cousins are named after our
ggrandfather Rubin. Mechla/Michalina is probably named
after our ggrandmother
Malka.
All this info was constructed >from www.shoreshim.org,
JRI-PL, Yad Vashem and my cousins' memory.

I wonder whether any one of you came across these
names and may shed some light on the two aunts of me
whose married names are not known to me.Thanks.

help finding an address in 1910 census #general

Jenni Hymoff Koeppel

Hello again.
One question leads to another. Thanks to all of you who answered my query
from yesterday: One of you actually managed to find a marriage listing for
my ggp and a death record for an unknown
"Lena" who might be yet another mystery sister to the mysterious Rachel.
Now to get the documents and see what information can be gleaned >from them!
Could somebody look at the 1910 census for Suffolk County, MA,
and see who lived at 102 Everett Avenue? My ggp's were there in 1900, but in
the 1910 census I only found my ggf in Rutland Sanatorium and didn't think
to look at the address the family lived at in 1900 when I had access to it.
That information could help me discover if two people were still alive
then. Or if there are even more mystery people around.

I live in Spain, on the Canary Islands and the nearest FHC is in
Seville, almost 1000 km away, and there are no library lookups here.
There isn't even a library in the town I live in.

Thanks for all your help, support and generosity!
