On the website https://www.mairie-paris.fr/fr/forms/asp/naissance.asp
You can fill the form for receiveing a birth record :

But it's just allowed for French citizen (as they ask for an ID card)

If you want me to order this record and send it to you by mail please

Charles LEBENSOLD (as Karl) appears in the Auschwitz arrival lists for =
22
June 1942 as Prisoner #40947. He is listed as having been born in =
Paris
6e, resided Paris XI.

My question is: Are there, somewhere, copies of birth certificates for =
Paris
VI, that might provide me with - among other things - the names of
Charles/Karl's parents? Or lists of residents of Paris XI?

Thank you.

In France, you can't obtain any birth (or marriage) certificate when
the birth or the marriage occurred for less than 100 years, except if
you are a descendant, ascendant or the spouse of the concerned
person. Other people can only obtain an excerpt which gives only the
name, first name and date of birth, while the complete document gives
(most of the time) the names of the parents.

On the other hand, complete death certificates can be obtained by
anybody (when they exist) and the names of the parents are written on
them. Unfortunately, deportees's death certificates where not often
drawn up, for different reasons.

According to different documents I checked into, Charles LEBENSOLD's
date and place of birth appear as 1st December 1922 in Paris (5e).
You should try to obtain his entire birth certificate in writing the
townhall.

Men of the Spirit [was: Reb Shraga Feivel] #rabbinic

Menachem Butler <menachembutler@...>

On 2005.10.28, Bernard Weill <linktree@...> asked:

Many of the references [...] are to Rabbi Alexander
Gross and Dr. Joseph Kaminetsky's "Shraga Mendlowitz", in Men of the
Spirit. Is anyone familiar with this publication? Was it a book
published strictly on Reb SHraga Feivel? Is it available?
Rav-SIG'ers:

Rabbi Leo Jung (1892-1987), Rabbi of Manhattan's The Jewish Center,
was famous for his collecting and publishing biographical articles
about prominent rabbis and Jewish leaders throughout modern Jewish
History. "Men of the Spirit" was the 1964 volume. It was the 8th
volume in his The Jewish Library series, which began in 1928 (though
earlier versions of some articles do appear). The final volume in
The Jewish Library series appeared in 1987. (The article about Reb
Shraga Feivel MENDLOWITZ appeared on pages 553-561.)

For other biographical information about Reb MENDLOWITZ, see "Jewish
Life" 16[2], December 1948 (the publication of the Union of Orthodox
Jewish Congregations of America); Gilbert Rosenthal, Contemporary
Judaism: Patterns of Survival (1986), 27, 46-47; Yonason Rosenblum,
"The Life and Times of Rabbi Shraga Feivel MENDLOWITZ, the Architect
of Torah in America" (2001).

"Men of the Spirit" and all of the other volumes published by Jung
are unfortunetly forgotten today but not because of its lack of
quality material. the information therein is amazing and people
should read all ten volumes!!!

SCHNEIER - New York City #rabbinic

In a 2003 article on Rabbi Marc SCHNEIER and his New York synagogue,
the online edition of the Forward
(http://www.forward.com/issues/2003/03.10.31/news16.nyshul.html)
refers to him as:

"an 18th-generation member of a rabbinic dynasty >from Austria
and Hungary. (His father, Arthur SCHNEIER, is the longtime
rabbi of the Park East Synagogue ten blocks north.)"

Is anyone aware of the rabbinic dynasty mentioned in the Forward

ILYA, Belarus records #lithuania

Howard Margol

I hate to disagree with Judy because, usually, she is right on target.
However, she is a little off on her statement that the ILYA records are
not in the Vilna archive. On behalf of the Belarus SIG, I obtained an
English translation of the entire 1850 Vileika District revision list
which included ILYA. I am presently working on the 1834 Vileika District
revision list which also includes ILYA. All of these records are in the
Historical Archive (LVIA) in Vilnius.

If you have any questions about these revision lists please direct them
to the Belarus SIG.
