Re: Searching for descendants of Mendel Henkin #general

Dear Lenn,

There is farmer, Mandel P. Henkin (56) in 1930 New
Haven Census with wife Ethel H.(49) and son Henry P.
(17). This matches info in 1917-1918 Draft
Registration for farmer Mendel Henkin in New Haven,
with closest relative of Ethel. There was a Henry P
and Bessie P living in New Haven area in Seymour in
1959 at 816 Elm. In the 1967 Directory it showed Henry
P as a salesman at Seymour furniture in Seymour. And a
student Judy Henkin living at the 816 Elm address.
Bessie wasn't listed. You might look up student
directories for Seymour around that time, or vital
statistics for the marriage of Judy Henkin.

There was also a death listed in 1986 in Branford,
Connecticut for Henry P Henkin who would have been
around 17 in 1930.

Sincerely,
Yehudah ben Shlomo

The name Binyamin, having been the father of my grandfather, Joseph VINER,
was the name written on Joseph's gravestone in the Etz Haim Cemetery in
Leeds UK.
The family possibly came >from Bialystok.Joseph

Gravestone Names #hungary

Sam Schleman <Samara99@...>

Hi;

A friend has found a photograph of a gravestone in the cemetery in
Nyiregyhaza that seems to be a relative.

The gravestone gives the correct father's name, and the age of the woman who
died is correct, as is her name. The one thing that is throwing me a bit is
that the surname is her maiden name, and my understanding is that she
married. In fact she is supposed to have died in childbirth not too long
after getting married. Her age was 23.

Has anyone encountered an instance where a young woman's gravestone uses her
maiden, rather than married name?

Does anyone know whether this occurred frequently enough that I can
reasonably figure this is my relative?

Thanks,

Sam

Re: MENDEL from Bellheim, Speyer, Germersheim, Landau #general

Roger Lustig <julierog@...>

Dear Angelika:

I see no reason to assume that anyone with the (sur)name MENDEL was
Jewish or descended >from Jews. The IGI lists MENDELs in the Catholic
parish christening register as far back as 1718 if not earlier. For most
places, Jewish records >from before then are not easy to come by; and
they wouldn't record a conversion. So, unless you can find such records
in Bellheim (for which LDS has films going back to 1684), your only hope
would be in whichever archive preserves old town records for that area.

If the name had derived >from Jewish ancestry, it would have been as a
patronym, most likely. But many people took a new surname when they
converted, so having a surname that could be a Jewish name doesn't
really indicate much. The name MENDEL is quite common, after all--and
as far as I know, nobody's ever found Jewish ancestry for, say, Gregor
MENDEL.

We have purchased and are restoring a house in Levoca (Slovakia). On our

last visit we were able to find, thanks to our friend Jana, the pre-war=20
Jewish cemetery of the town. It is located in an area of allotments=20
outside the town, and although unvandalised, it is completely overgrown=20
and invisible to anyone who doesn't know it is there. I took some=20
photographs (which include in one case a gravestone now half enclosed in

a tree which has grown round it). Many of the stones are however=20
completely legible (in Hebrew and Hungarian).

I would like to know if there is any organisation which may be=20
interested in restoring, or at least tidying up, the cemetery. My wife=20
speaks Slovak and we would be glad to intervene with the local=20
authorities for their support or assistance. Please let me have any
ideas.
