If you look at this site: http://www.photolondon.org.uk/directory.htm you will find quite a bit of information about London photographers. At the same address as "your" Mr. Olley is this entry - Olley, Charles Richard 110 Southgate Rd, Kingsland Rd. N. 1903-08- 194 New Kent Road S.E. 1907-08- Maybe M.B. Olley was his brother? Anyway, >from the lady's dress, it would seem that this was taken at the beginning of the 20th century. Jill Anderson London UK

1. Ester Rochel (?) Kuznetsov (?)
No living person, that I know of, knows what my paternal grandmothers maiden name was. >from notes that my Mother took years ago I've learned that she was from Belarus, Minsk Gubernia, somewhere near Babroisk. Unfortunately the only other info I have is >from her headstone...it says that she was the daughter of Rav Yacov and that she was born in 1896. If anyone out there thinks that this rings a bell or that we may be related please contact me. I thought that I had an entry >from ellis islands database which may be her but there are several inconsistencies. It still may be her but I really have no where to confirm any of this yet. It seems that her father was living when she came to this country but stories have it that her mother and sisters were killed in a pogrom. Thank you for your indulgence and any help you may be able to give. naming practices
#lithuania
ellieweld <ellieweld@...>
I have been happily ignoring the discussion on naming practices until I
remembered that my father's name was Beryl and my brother's Beryl David (he is always called David, however). Both my parents were children and grandchildren of rabbis but were totally nonpractising and nonbelieving. It seems possible that they were cocking a snook at practices which they scorned; and I wonder whether any other families who named a child after a living parent or grandparent were doing the same thing. Gerald commented :
The one aspect regarding the 'Sarah bas Sarah' question that does not No, in this instance Sarah b. Paris 1892, daughter of Sarah b.Vilna 1866, was the second of three children. Her Mother, also known as Sarah, died in 1904, two years after the birth of her third child. So, in this case, obviously Sarah was probably not named after her Mother or either of her Grandmothers, but may have been named after another unknown relative. Who knows! One of these unanswerable puzzles we all come across in our research. Thanks anyway. Lorraine Bertelsen Boho, Downunder

Hi,
I am looking for my grandpa's cousin, Ruta (Ruth) BALSAM, or her descendants. Her maiden name was MILLER. Her mother's name was Bluma (JACUBOWICZ) Miller. Searching location of Sitnija, Ukraine

We are looking for a town or village in Ukraine that sounds like Sitnija.
Various family members say the name differently. I have also heard, Shittinya and Shitneya. The only other clues I have is that it may be near or related to Jomel and Sloboda, all supposedly in Ukraine, but I have not been able to find any of the above. Marjorie Goldberg
