Dear moderator of the H SIG list,

I am not sure that M. Amsel-Arieli previously sent Email to this group or to
the Romania SIG list. If it was this list, please note that I strongly
object to her signing her message with a website which advertises her book.
No one should be allowed to use the SIG forum as a means of advertising a
product or a service they sell, promote or derive some benefit from.
Signatures should consist solely of name and location.

Thank you Miriam Taylor

Moderator: The book in question can be purchased at the JewishGen Mall, which is the sole reason why the tag line was included with the message. The Moderator apologizes for not including an explanation to that effect. JewishGen is currently evaluating this policy.

Dear Group,

Does anyone have information regarding Menachem Mendeal
LEBOWICZ (c.1875 - 1944) married to Alte Chana Bayla
JUROWICZ (1875-1944). Both perished in the Holocaust. They
lived in Nagykallo and had several children. One was Tzvi,
born 1902 and presumed perished as well.

I am interested in finding out more detail about this
family as well as possible survivors.

Re: missing Ellis Island manifest #general

Morris was frustrated when the Ellis Island on-line manifests was "missing"
If the data exists, there are other ways to get it: (I might add, the
"old fashioned way"...<g>)

1. NARA (national archives in NY and Washington)...they have the microfilm...
some of the other local branches may have them too. You can call and ask.

2. Local libraries & genealogical societies: (i've seen many at the NY public
library at 42nd st, at the NY B&G, and in the main Savannah public library)

3. Certainly the Mormon Family History Library has the microfilm
Begin with their online catalog
http://tinyurl.com/9bsjr
Select the film#. On the same web page there is a search for the nearest
library; order the film and view the manifest (if possible, print it in order
to review it later)

there's a reason....and it's a financial one. In business there needs
to be a financial reason to fund a project; otherwise you will soon go
out of business. The archives are opening up all over the world...why?
altruism? i dont think so. The archives have discovered a way to make
themselves self-sufficient, by charging for access to the documents.
There are plenty of archives, usually public ones, which are open free,
in full or in part, to the public. To take a few examples - the Commonwealth
War Graves Commission, Canadian National Archives, National Archives of
Australia, The London Gazette. These are available on the Internet. Some of
these and others can be visited personally where sight of the archives is free.

It's true enough; not idle propaganda. While Denmark and Holland somehow
achieved a not entirely deserved reputation for saving their Jews, the

pride on this account.
Some Jews >from other countries even found refuge in Albania.
1 Holland -
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,13509-1795316,00.html
shows that 75% of the Dutch Jewish pre-War population were killed.
This is about what I understood, yet Holland had quite a reputation
for saving its Jews; PR is a wonderful thing.

I did not know the statistic below about Denmark; thank you. Quite a
contrast. Albania, by the way, is said to have lost no Jews at all,
because of popular resistance to German efforts at departation.

2 Denmark -
http://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/jsource/Holocaust/denmark.html says that
Denmark was the only country to actively resist the Nazi attempt to deport
its Jews. It says that of the 8,000 pre-War Danish Jews that only 50 Jews of
500 who were deported to Theriesenstadt didn't survive - this was because of
pressure >from Danish officials expressing concern for the wellbeing of their
Danish Jewish compatriots.
