Jerome,

Wolka (wo'lka) is one of the most popular placenames in Poland, Ukraine in
Belarus. Wulka's name derives >from "wola" (vola, volya) which in the several
Slavic languages identifies a freedom. Wulka name was given to many
settlements as to identify their independence >from the nearby parish. Very
often name Wulka is combined with name of this parish (or the region) as in
example: Wolka Medzynska (parish Miedzna near Wegrow) or Wulka Mazowiecka.

Without knowing exactly nearby parish or a district (uyezd or powiat) name,
it would rather difficult to pinpoint Wulka location.

"Zawodaceni" shall provide a clue as to researched by you Wulka whereabouts,
but this Moldavian/Romanian sounding town name is not identified - perhaps
it should read: Zawada or Zawady?

With regards to your question to the port of departure and Bremen's distance
from the ocean.
It is correct that Bremen is located on the Weser River is situated some 60
km >from the North Sea.
In reality, oceangoing vessels departured >from Bremenhaven, the twin city of
Bremen, the one of the largest German port.

Re: Town of Buehl - seek vital records SITE CITE 2 #germany

Justin Levy <levyduffy@...>

Hanna,
For finding placing in Germany, I find it best using the Genealogical Gazeteer at:

http://gov.genealogy.net/ (instructions in English - mostly)

There is a town of Buhl (with an umlaut on the u) in Landkreis Rastatt, SE of
Baden-Baden. The post code is 77815.

For Jewish communities in Baden-Wuerttemberg go to:

http://www.alemannia-judaica.de/baden_wuerttemberg_friedhoefe.htm

Although this site is mostly in German, this community history is in English:

"Buehl Baden. Jews are first mentioned in 1579 but the few Jewish families there
were forced to leave in the early 17th century and the Jewish settlement was only
renewed during the Thirty Years War (1618-48). A synagogue was dedicated in 1832
and a cemetery in 1833. In 1830-76 a Jewish elementary school was in operation
as the Jewish population grew to a peak of 301 in 1865 (total 2,888). In 1827,
Bruehl became the seat of the district rebbinate. Among its leading rabbis was
Leopold Schott (1807-69), one of the first rabbis in Baden with a university
education, who introduced a Reform style of worship. There were anti-Jewish riots
in the 1848 revolution. Jews were regularly elected to the municipal council.
from the last third of the 19th century, the Jewish population began to decline
through emigration and the shift to the big cities, dropping to 72 in 1933.
When the Nazis came to power, the Jews were immediately subjected to persecution.
Torah scrolls were vandalized in 1935 and Jews were gradually forced to liquidate
their businesses. On Kristallnacht (9-10 November 1938), the synagogue was burned
and Jewish stores damaged. Up to 1940, 21 Jews emigrated and 13 left for other
German cities. The community ended when 28 were deported to the Gurs concentration
camp on 22 October 1940."

Hope this helps you track down the records you are seeking.

any idea as to what this is?
Could this "Black Bread Disease" be related to Coeliac disease also
apparently known as celiac disease, non-tropical sprue, and gluten intolerance?
Celiac disease is caused by exposure to the gluten in wheat, rye, barley
and other grains --- the very ones which are the main ingredients of bread,
including black bread in Europe.

The custom of marrying the widow of your brother who had
not produced a child was alive and well in Nezhin Ukraine (a town

marriages do not appear specifically noted in the marriage records,
