My Grandfather's House film screening
#general
Eileen Douglas <faithdouglas@...>
Dear JewishGen members,
We wanted to let those in the Baltimore and Greater Washington, D.C. area know that our documentary "My Grandfather's House" will be screening at the Jewish Museum of Maryland in Baltimore on Sunday, November 6th, at 2 p.m. The museum is located at 15 Lloyd Street in Baltimore, phone number is 410-732-6400. Filmmakers Eileen Douglas and Ron Steinman will be present for a Q &A. My Grandfather's House follows the determined search to find the house the filmmaker's grandfather lived in in Kovno, Lithuania before he fled to America in 1911 to avoid conscription in the Tsar's Army. With only fragments to guide the way, the documentary is an attempt to left the veil of darkness and discover "where it all began." My Grandfather's House has screened in Chicago, Los Angeles, the IAJGS convention in Las Vegas, the National Yiddish Book Center, and the Library of Congress in recent months. We hope those in the area can join us in Baltimore. Eileen Douglas

Hallo Jewishgenners
Some time back, through JewishGen , a Lazer Szaff contacted me asking me for information on a LAPIDUS family. I emailed him back but it bounced (even though I clicked on "reply". Jack LAWRENCE/ Jacob L. SCHWARTZ
#general
Joan Rosen <jgrosen@...>
The composer and lyricist Jack LAWRENCE, nee Jacob L. SCHWARTZ, is a distant
relative. I am including bio information about him in my genealogy program. I would like to include a collage of the *original* covers of the sheet music for any of his songs, whether he was lyricist, or composer, or both. I have been unable to obtain copies of any of those *original* covers, although I have newer reprints, which are not as interesting and colorful as the old ones. I seek copies of those covers--I do not need the entire piece of music. I would be happy to receive them via email attachments, or through postal mail ( I will send my address to any who need it for that purpose.) Below is a long list of what he wrote (he has lived a long and productive life, and is still composing in his nineties.) Please pardon the long posting. The following is a list of the songs Jack wrote, either the words or the music or both, between 1920 and 1979. Neither the dates of the individual songs nor his role as composer or lyricist is given in this first list. It is >from a book called *Popular Music*, edited by Nat Shapiro, c1979: All or Nothing at All; Beyond the Sea (English version); Choo Choo Train; Ciribiribin (They're So in Love); Concerto for Two; Delicado: Faith; The Greatest Mistake of My Life; Hand in Hand; A Handful of Stars; Hold My Hand; Huckleberry Duck; Had a Ball; I f I Didn't Care (The Ink Spots Theme Song); I'll Hate Myself in the Morning; I'm Glad for Your Sake (but I'm Sorry for Mine); In an Eighteenth Century Drawing Room; In the Moon Mist; It's Funny to Everyone but Me; Johnson Rag; Linda (written for the Linda who became Linda McCartney); Merry-Go-Round; Moonlight Masquerade; My Heart Isn't in It; No One but You; The Other Half of Me; Passing By; Play, Fiddle, Play; The Poor People of Paris; By the Sleepy Lagoon; So Far, So Good; Sunrise Serenade; Symphony; Tenderly; To You My Love; Vagabond Dreams; The Valentino Tango; What Will I Tell My Heart; What's Your Story, Morning Glory; With the Wind and the Rain in Your Hair; Yes, My Darling Daughter. The *ASCAP Biographical Dictionary*, which was published 1980, lists a additional titles by songs and by lyrics: Songs: Almost; Big Boy Blue; Fickle Finger of Fate; Foolin' Myself; My Bel Ami; My Love Has Two Faces; Susan Slept Here; Talk to Me 'Bout the Hard Times; What Would People Say? Lyrics: Boy Scout in Switzerland; Never Smile at a Crocodile; Poor People of Paris; Song of the Barefoot Contessa; Trembling of a Leaf; What's Your Story, Morning Glory? In addition, Jack wrote the scores of the following Broadway shows: I Had a Ball; Courtin' Time; Ziegfeld Follies; Crazy with the Heat; and for the following films: Torch Song; Dinner at Eight; Lady Eve; Peter Pan; Valentino; Sleeping Beauty; Manhattan Merry-Go-Round; Susan Slept Here; Only Game in Town; Bachelor's Daughters; Affairs of Bel Ami; Flame and the Flesh; Deadfall; Fedora; The Pawnbroker He has written songs more recently, but I do not know the titles. I know he has written some for Barbra Streisand. I thought he had written the words to Bei Mir Bist du Shayn, but I am not certain. Any would be appreciated. Thanks for your help. NYC Census Update
#general
Joel Weintraub <jweintraub@...>
Group,
Just an update on the utilities for the New York City Census on the Morse One Step site. http://www.stevemorse.org/nyc/nyc.php Our initial goal was to produce aids for researchers to find the Assembly District/Election District number (AD/ED) of their target address for the New York State Censuses of 1905, 1915, and 1925 for the five boroughs of NYC. Three census years x five NYC boroughs gives 15 entities to cover. Two entities lack census schedules (Queens and Staten Island 1905). Of the remaining 13, only Staten Island 1925 has a commercially available name index, so a geographical method must be employed to find the AD/ED number, and then the Family History Library film number, in order to see the Census schedules for the boroughs/years. (Suzanne Danet is working on an everyname index for Brooklyn 1925 that is on the Morse website.) We employed a number of strategies to provide such utilities. Bronx 1915 was just put up on the website, and is based on maps >from the New York Public Library that only show half of that borough...thus only half of the AD/EDs are searchable. With the latest database, we have covered twelve of the thirteen entities; only Bronx 1905 is uncovered. Most of the utilities are based on producing or reading maps of the necessary AD/EDs, and transcribing streets. Since Election District boundaries often changed between Elections, the accuracy of this approach isn't 100%. A better way would be to have a table of an address to an AD/ED specific to the NY Census date. Such tables are also being worked on, and when completed will be added to the existing utilities. Read the FAQs on the website to find out further information on the utilities. I have run out of mapping resources for doing Bronx 1905 or completing at this time Bronx 1915. If anyone is doing research in the Bronx archives, and comes across ED boundary definitions for 1905 or/and 1915, photocopy them, and contact me. Such descriptions were required to be publicized by law, and might appear in Bronx newspapers of that time or perhaps Election Boards. We checked the NY Times archives and they do not have what we need. The 1925 NY census is often touted as providing detailed information as to what court naturalizations occurred. I have found that the NYC enumerators were not consistent in filling out that part of the census. Some did put down the actual court and date of naturalization while others just put down a year and a state (e.g. "NY"). It would be interesting to see a copy of the instructions to enumerators for these state censuses, but so far I have been unable to find a copy. The 1925 census was the last one done by New York State. In the late 1930s the state legislature agreed to use the Federal census for their apportionment needs. Enjoy... Joel Weintraub

Having said that, there is a website 555-1212, that is a subscription site. One can get info by name, address, or phone number, unless the phone number is not listed. This is a real problem.
