Rye bread and the Jewish connection. #general

Celia Male <celiamale@...>

As this is a Jewish genealogy group and we are dealing with a scientific subject,
may I suggest we stick to the facts re ergotism [which we have discussed under the
subject title "Black bread disease"], namely that it is caused by an ergot
[fungal] infection of rye which has dire effects on humans as the active
components in the ergot are very toxic.

There is no point speculating that it is coeliac disease, black death or caused by
eating *hot bread* - the cause of this condition has been known for hundreds of
years. This website, based on a lecture, gives the background [and also discusses
witchcraft and bubonic plague references] very clearly:
http://www.botany.hawaii.edu/faculty/wong/BOT135/LECT12.HTM

Coeliac disease is totally different - it is an autoimmune condition caused by a
sensitivity to a peptide sequence in the gliadin component of gluten found in
wheat, barley and rye. It can go undetected, cause great intestinal discomfort,
have minor symptoms or be asymptomatic. It is not of a neurological nature and is
now thought to affect up to 1-3 per cent of the total population in the UK and
probably many other Western countries. The only known treatment is to avoid these
cereals in the diet. Genetic engineering of cereal crops may eventually provide an
answer to the sufferers.

Rye cultivation [the grain was also present as weed infestation of wheat crops]
was very widespread in the Middle East in ancient times but probably ergot
poisoning was very rare as the fungus needs damp conditions to develop. Ergot
contamination can occur anywhere if the conditions are correct. An outbreak in rye
fields is recorded in 2000 in N. America:

http://tinyurl.com/eyx5a

We can read here about the global distribution of rye cultivation:
http://rye.vtt.fi/chapter6.htm and this is confirmed on our own Jewishgen website:
in Lida district Poland, rye was the predominant cereal crop: rye-229,300 ha.,
oats-103,600 ha., barley-37,100 ha., wheat-7,000 ha. Rye also grows very well in
Galicia.
Thus, rye cultivation went hand-in-hand with areas of high Jewish population:
http://tinyurl.com/aut2n

There must have been many Jews who suffered [and perhaps died] >from ergotism in
Eastern Europe - how this was designated on the death certificate is another
subject. If you read the first reference carefully, you will see that there were
large outbreaks in the twentieth century: Russia 1926/1927 with 10,000 cases;
France 1951; UK amongst Central European Jews in 1927. No self-respecting
Englishman would eat rye bread!

With modern detection techniques for contamination of rye, hopefully ergot
poisoning has been confined to the history books.

Re: STAKER/STECHER #unitedkingdom

Victoria Barkoff <vbar@...>

Julie Staker wrote that she has traced her STAKER ancestry back to
1563 in England. As the Jews were expelled >from England in 1290 and
not readmitted until 1654, it seems unlikely that Julie's STAKERs
were Jewish.

Julie also mentions finding STAKER records on JRI Poland. I suspect
that these Eastern European Jews adopted a surname many centuries
later than her British STAKERs, and were probably unrelated to them.

HENRY BERGMAN, an actor from Hull #unitedkingdom

Martin Miller <millerm@...>

Hansel BERGMAN died here in Syracuse in 1904 at the age of 96. His wife
Rebecca died here in 1879. According to her tombstone her Hebrew name was
Rivka bat Avraham and her husband's name was Yehoshua (Joshua).

According to Hansel's obituary, he resided in England for many years before
coming to the US about 1878.

According to the obituary he left three children: Henry BERGMAN of Hull,
England (an actor), Rachel GOLDBERG of Lynn, MA and Fannie BERNSTEIN of
Boston, MA.

Another obituary lists four children, adding Louis BERGMAN of New York City.
In an index of the 1881 England census I found a listing for a Louis Henry
BERGMAN, a single man, in Hull in 1881.

Hansel's place of burial, his synagogue associations and the folks he
boarded with over the years all point to Naishtat (Kurdirkos Naumiestis) as
a possible place of origin for the family.

His circumstances also indicate a potential connection to my wife's BERKMAN
(many used the BERGMAN variation) family, who came >from Sudargas, Lithuania
and migrated to other locations.

I'd love to hear >from anyone who recognizes these names.

Interested in doing a Yizkor or community history Book? #ukraine

zionsharav

Small towns of interest to me in subcarpathian modern Ukraine include:
VELKE BEREZNE aka Nagyberezne; TURIZCA aka Nagyturjaszog; and TURIA
REMETY. They were close to Galicia and the modern Slovak border but
seem to have been under Austro-Hungary rather than Russia or Poland.
These towns do not seem to have Yizkor books- so better late than
never! Let's start! - Ari Dale (Israel)

MOD NOTE: The book has to be obtained; copyright cleared; translators hired; etc.
This is up to you to arrange & coordinate.

My maternal granfather Nathan Krasnow came >from Krevoza in the early

Any information about the place or the people would be very helpful.

NATHAN and the ROUXVILLE HOTEL #southafrica

Adam Yamey <adamandlopa@...>

I have recently seen a photograph of President JH
Brand, taken in 1883, standing in front of a hotel in
Rouxville, in the (Orange)Free State. The Hotel, a
single storey structure, is named "The Rouxville
Hotel", and on its side wall, is the wording "HOTEL.
BY E. NATHAN". Who was this E. NATHAN? Was he related
to the NATHAN family of Graaf-Reinet?

Thanks, Adam Yamey, London, UK <adamandlopa@yahoo.co.uk>
