Here we are folks, on JewishGen's bulletin board. Someone asks for a
map of the ukraine to locate 3 towns.

Well, we have the greatest shtetl locator available ... the JewishGen
Shtetlseeker....just go there, click on "find towns", enter your town
and the country....(soundex is built in)..and voila...3 ways to view
the maps...(i prefer mapquest)...

www.jewishgen.org/shtetlseeker

and one wonderful tool too....you wont find this on any other map!
Jot down the latitude/longitude of your main shtetl....put that into
your next search and the ShtetlSeeker will tell you the distance
between the 2 towns!! so you'll know if you are in the right area.

good news for Mielec researchers #galicia

Renee Steinig <rsteinig@...>

As Town Leader for the town of Mielec for JRI - Poland (Jewish
Records Indexing-Poland), I am happy to share some good news
for Mielec researchers.

Approximately 5,000 Mielec records in the Rzeszow branch of
the Polish State Archives have been indexed for JRI - Poland,
including census listings, army draft entries, and vital
records. The Archives also reports the discovery of
3,000-3,500 additional records, which we hope can be indexed
in the future.

If you would like more information on these records, please
let me know, and I will be glad to send details.

Passengers on the Baloeran ex Rotterdam Feb 18 1939 #poland

Dear Researchers,

The web site below enables a search of passengers and dutch ships. As many
of our ancestors fled Europe by this means you may find it useful source of
records.

http://d-compu.dyndns.org/Passagiers/default.asp

I have recently obtained a list of passengers on the Baloeran that departed
from Rotterdam on Feb 18 1939 to various destinations including Port Said
and others on the way to Batavia. My grandparents were on this vessel as
the first leg of their escape >from Germany to Australia.
I have studied the list and identified what I believe to be other Jewish
names. I have listed these below. Anyone with an interest in these names
or other aspects of this list are welcome to contact me for more details.
I may have missed some or included ones that are not of Jewish heritage as
well.

Condolence to Dr. Perets (Percy) Mett #lithuania

It is with deep sorrow that I convey condolences to Dr. Perets (Percy) Mett
and his family of London on the tragic loss of his son Shmuel Eliyahu
(Hashem Yinkom Damo) who was murdered by an Arab terrorist in Jerusalem.

Dr. Mett is a member of the committee of RavSIG and is known for his
genealogical researches, particularly Chassidic families.

Those who attended the International Conference on Jewish Genealogy in
Jerusalem last year may recall Perets.

May the Almighty comfort him and his family together with all the mourners

Dear Susana,

Here is some information about the town you are looking for:

Belz, Ukraine, previously in Eastern Galicia
Coordinates: 50°23' 24°01'
Variant name: Beltz, Belzec, Belza, Bele
38.0 miles N of Lviv

Administrative District: Sokal
Judicial/ Sub District: Belz
Jewish population before the Holocaust: 2.104

Belz was part of Poland in the inter-war years so you can see the Belz Business
Directory in the 1929 Polish Business Directory Project webpage:
http://www.jewishgen.org/jri-pl/bizdir/start.htm
Click on:
Town Index Search Engine
and type in Belz

There is a famous old Yiddish song " Mein Shtetele Belz" [My Little Town Belz]
frequently sung by Klezmer bands and more recently by Neil Sedaka and
Mandy Patinkin.

There is also a town that was called Belz in Romania and is now Balti, Moldovia.
It was also known as Belz, Beltsy. Coordinates: 47°46' 27°56'. But since
your family came >from Galicia the town above is the one you are looking for.

There is some information on the JewishGen website that you can find by going to

I have checked the web site and find it very interesting.
The first 2 maps show Napolean's Army path to Moscow in 1812 and the Russian
Army following him back.
The second page shows nationality makeup of cities in Belarus Territory in
1897 >from Riga to Gomel. Included populations are Belarus, Russian,
Ukranian, Polish, Latvian, etc.
One of the other maps of Belarus further down the list appears to show
provinces in 1770.
