Although I was born & bred in South Africa, I have been living in London for 15 years. I hope I can help you regarding your Galinsky family. I don't know exactly what you are trying to find out...if it's just anything to do with your Galinsky ancestors in general or just information about any branches that landed up in South Africa? I, together with a cousin in the USA have been tracing the Gavendo-Galinsky family tree for over 20 years. I have concentrated on the Gavendo branch of the family while the cousin in the USA has been collecting info about ALL Galinsky family & the various variant spellings of the surname. We have published a few editions of our Family Book, which contains all the info regarding the Gavendo/Gavenda family as well as info regarding all the Galinsky family who over the years have provided us with their various family trees. I need to tell you that whereas all the Gavendo family , & the variant spellings of that surname , are all related to one another, NOT all the Galinsky/Gilinsky family are related to one another. By collating whatever Galinsky/Gilinsky info came our way over the years, we have been able to link certain branches to our Gilinsky family & also link other branches to one another even if they were not related to our branch. Over the last 2-3 years we have had members >from all the various branches Genetically tested & so we have now been able to proove genetically which branches are related & which are not. We actually held a Gilinsky/Galinsky family reunion in London a while back. I don't know how far back you have been able to trace your family but I can tell you that you are presently showing as being descended >from Enoch Galinski. Most of the people who attended the London Reunion were descendants of Enoch Galinski & thus your relatives. If my memory serves me correctly, your Galinski family has been shown through the Genetic Testing not to be related to my branch . Your family tree has been extensively researched & if you let me know what you are trying to find out, I will try put you in touch with the people who can help you most. Also, feel free to ask me any questions you may have. With best wishes Joel Levy, London, UK

Ukraine SIG News Alert - New Projects Pages
#ukraine
Deborah Glassman <historian2020@...>
Dear Fellow SIG Members
We continue to add resources to the Web site. Go to our Projects Page http://www.jewishgen.org/Ukraine/projects.htm to see that: 1. Ron Doctor and Sheree Roth together leading the Kremenets Shtetl CO-OP of the JRI-Poland, have provided an amazing set of tools that in addition to showing you the picture of what your surname probably looks like in Russian and Hebrew (if it is one of the surnames also in their region) and specific words for causes of death, or for occupations, or for words in vital and demographic materials; also gives name indexes to a major community in Volhynnia gubernia. 2. The ShtetLink Webmasters of the Ukraine now have a new forum to let you know about their work and their upcoming projects. And the webmasters of Litin, Poninka, and Snitkowo have begun to do so. 3. That there is a new place to collect a visual database of info on photographer's marks >from different cities so that eventually, we can help date your photos . We certainly want every photo that you have that was taken in Ukrainian towns and cities. But now we also want you to turn them over and send the photographer's details that are on the backs too. 4.Where the flood of data and pictures that you have been sending has gone to make our projects work. What you can't see there are the volunteer efforts that the membership have begun after these project needs were posted.. Alex Kopelberg helped bring into being five pages of quality modern photographs of Zhitomir and is eager to help with other Volhynnian projects. Laura Katz, Bonnie Blish, Barbara Stephenson, and Naomi Moderick have been creating indices of emigrants from their respective ancestral towns of Smela, Dashev, Odessa, and Proskurov and they have agreed to begin on the long slow process of creating an index that did not exist previously for Third Parties named in the Records of the Emigrants >from those towns. The names of people back in the "old country" and the names of the relatives and friends waiting at the destination address and the names of all members of a traveling party, these are the names being tracked for the first time by these hard-working ladies, who will be eyes-on for every manifest with an emigrant >from their towns. Eliana Aizim has graciously shared photos, recipes, information about Brazilian resources on Ukrainian immigrants, and suggestions that improved the information-gathering ability of our databases. There are others who have made important contributions too and I am going to try to work around to naming them all in the coming months, I didn't even mention all of those who have long been SIG activists. In September we asked for information on particular towns as an incentive to start the process rolling. Your fellow members understood the spirit of the request and did not limit themselves to those towns. But it seems to help to have a target list, so for November we would like folks sending us pictures, family records, archival finds, etc. for the towns of Kharkov, Poltava, Mogilev-Podolia, Lutsk, Nikolaev in Kherson, anyplace in Taurida or Crimea, and Kremenchug. If you have sent me data for one of the databases and it was not published within 2 weeks of your sending it, can you please send me a note? With the Holidays, it might have been put aside and not returned to, and your contribution is important. Use the 2 week rule anytime, to make sure that your material has not been misplaced. Her grave had been in a similar state (a long story not to be told here) when I began paying for it to be cleared and looked after. When I first made contact with the office at Baron Hirsch I was told that a geneologist had been researching the names buried there and discovered the name of my maternal great grandparents. No other information was available and I asked for my details to be passed to the genealogist for help with my research. She never replied. That was 5 years ago. I've often noted requests for translations >from Yiddish and other languages. I had a two page letter posted on Viewmate and never got a full translation, but through the National Yiddish Book Store in Amherst, MA I obtained a four page list of translators living in many states and outside the U.S. I contacted one who lived near me (in case I needed to bring the original document) and got a good result. I would gladly send a copy of the list of translators (in MS Word format) to anyone who might need it. Many translators have email links and telephone listings. It would be up to the recipient to contact and make whatever arrangements suit their needs. I can trace my taglines back 8 generations Ken Browne clacking the keys in olde Sturbridge village, MA Moderator Comment: PLEASE RESPOND PRIVATELY.

Nicki Chodnoff - On The Go Publishing <nicki@...>
I've hit a stumbling block. I've been trying to find my grandparents (Wolf
and Hudes Rozental) grave sites in the new Lodz Jewish cemetery. I know Wolf and Hudes are buried there. My aunt told me that directly after the war she visited her father's grave (Wolf). Wolf died in the Lodz Ghetto in 1942. He was prominent in his synagogue in Lodz and after the war the remaining synogague members secured a grave and put up a headstone. My grandmother, who also died in the Lodz Ghetto in 1942, is buried in the Ghetto Field, so my aunt couldn't find the exact location. I've searched the Lodz cemetery database online at http://www.jewishlodzcemetery.org and couldn't find their names. However, only a small portion of the people buried in the cemetery are listed so far. I've contacted the Jewish Community of Lodz and asked about my grandparents graves and their location. They responded that neither of my grandparents are buried in the cemetery, which I know is not true. Is there a place where all the people buried in the cemetery are listed, other than actually visiting the cemetery? Any and all suggestions on how to proceed and find the burial spots will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
