Dear Genners:
Does anyone out there have any connection to the village of Horozanna Wielka near Komarno (Galicia)? We already know where it is located; does anyone have family from there? Many thanks for any leads, Yale J. Reisner & Anna Przybyszewska Drozd The Ronald S. Surnames Spellings and Soundex
#general
Barbara Zimmer <bravo.zulu@...>
Recent inquiries about the "correct" spellings of surnames brought forth the
suggestion to use Soundex (which applies a numerical value to various consonants or groups of consonants.) There is only one drawback -- you must start with a designated letter. Hence, there are different Soundex numbers for KRAVITZ versus CRAVITZ, for example, since they start with a different letter of the alphabet. My advice is to try both. Also, remember that pronunciation >from the Old Country could produce a name that was spelled with a variety of initial consonants in English. "Creative" spelling attempts often produce success! Presumably an Australian Family History Group must be able to give guidance on this without suggesting that every person who has a problem with obtained family information go to the Australian Privacy Commissioner. Whilst I am sure that these issues might be important for the complainant, I would suggest that people think long and hard before going down this route. After all the best way of bringing the operation of a well-intentioned Act to a halt is by the load of requests that are made. Thank you -- Creation of a Passenger List
#general
Doug Mason
"Thank you" to everyone who has helped me better understand the context of the
Passenger Lists ("Manifests"). The following is my current understanding. Please send me corrections and additions. The Lists were written by the shipping company at the place of departure. I was told the shipping company was given the details for a Passenger List by the Agent who ordered the ticket. An Agent might be a professional or a relative. Some Agents might have known how things had to be written to make the passenger acceptable to an Immigration official. Just like a student at school who might write an answer in an exam that will get good marks >from a teacher. I believe errors on the Lists also happened while information was copied on to a List >from the written information provided by an Agent. I was told shipping companies were responsible for the return journey of a passenger who was refused entry into the US. If this was so, shipping companies would have a vested interest in presenting information so that it was accepted by an Immigration official. Even if a passenger knew something was not exactly correct, they might not have dared say anything. They simply wanted to enter the US, and if an incorrect entry allowed this to happen, they would not mind. Given their lifelong experience with authoritarian regimes, intending immigrants would hardly argue with a US government representative. "My" passenger, who travelled in 1920, could not read nor write her own native language, let alone English. So how could she recognise or correct any errors in her entry? The shipping company and the passenger were interested in their current situation. The Lists were produced by them, for them. They did not produce the Lists for their descendants or for future genealogists. The Passenger Lists are vitally important. They provide information that might otherwise not be available to a modern genealogist. Recognising the various factors at play in a List's creation helps us understand and accommodate any imperfections. Knowing the possible sources of errors helps us make better use of the Lists. BTW. "My" passenger travelled on the "Baltic" which, along with its sister ships the "Celtic", "Cedric" and "Adriatic", had Passenger Lists that were typed, not handwritten. These ships belonged to the White Star Line, which was taken over by Cunard. I wondered if the White Star Line archives are still available, but my on-line search has run into a brick wall.
