Hello To All
I am hoping someone out there can help me. I am trying to trace the wherabouts and death of my grandfathers mother(my great-grandmother). She is listed on the 1930 census with her daughter. Her name was spelled Reva, but it could also be spelled as ruth or rwya. On the census for 1930 in new york she is listed in her mid 50's and widowed. She was residing with her married daughter Rose Friedman & husband Aaron. She was also listed as head of household. I have never been able to find any trace of her in my searches. I believe they were living in brooklyn. My grandfathers name is Milton FAIKES and his sister was rose. His sister came to america in 1922, followed by the mother 1929. Then my grandfather came here in 1932. Any help and advice is appreciated. Sarah Greenberg sacredsisters3@aol.com

For those that wish more information, go to www.houstonjewish.org,
the website of the Houston Jewish Federation, which is coordinating help for Gulf Coast Jews (not just in New Orleans) impacted by Katrina. The New Orleans Jewish Federation is now based in the Houston Jewish Federation offices. We found out yesterday that our cousins >from Kenner, LA, whose home was 2 blocks >from the lake, all made it out to their daughter's home in Dallas. Some 44 people, ages 1-64 (grandparents, children, spouses, siblings, grandkids) are safe there in that one home, although they got out with only important papers and one change of clothes (expecting to go home the next day). All the kids are already enrolled in school, a first step in bringing some normalcy to an abnormal situation. Although none of them have homes, businesses or jobs to return to, they are safe and sound, albeit crowded for the time being. Luckily, they are a very close family. Just imagining the logistics of having 44 people in one home every day for what may be months is impossible to visualize. We certainly include in our prayers all the Gulf residents impacted by Katrina, and salute Texas for doing so much. And at this time, although not to take our attention off the immense human suffering, it is appropriate to remind researchers to make back-up copies (electronic, disk, hard copies) of their work. Make copies and send them to family in different places. One never knows what may happen. With best wishes to everyone whose family and friends have been through this, with the hope that those separated will soon be reunited, and with thanks to the communities which have welcomed those in need! Hello To All
I am seeking any information on my MENDELSON ancestors. Is there anyone out there who may have known them or are descended >from them. Samuel & Louis Mendelson are siblings to my great-grandmother Anna(Mendelson)Rakoff. My great-grandmother died in 1980. I am trying to find the death date of Samuel/Sam Or Louis. I don't have a lot of information to go on. I believe that Samuel probably died after 1949, for I believe he is in the photos of my grandmothers wedding in new york in june of 1949. I also have naturalization papers on my great-grandmother >from 1958, and both Louis & Samuel are listed as witnesses. My problem is I know they lived and died in New york but not where or when. I do know that Samuels wife Is named Emma. Also what makes it more difficult is the spelling of the last name. I am not sure if they spelled it as mendelson or mendelsohn. When I look in the social security death index for Samuel I get too many possibles. So I am seeking help >from anyone who may have known them. My great-grandmother and her family lived in Brooklyn, so perhaps her brothers did as well. According to my great-grandmother's social security application her parents were listed as Max & Baila Reva Mendelson. All advice and help is appreciated. I believe they were all originally >from russia possibly minsk. Sarah Greenberg sacredsisters3@aol.com

Hi,
I do not believe that these people came >from somewhere else as there are none of them anywhere else, at least so far. If one accepts that most Jewish families had to adopt "western" family names at around the time of the early 18th century, then I have to believe that these folks, apparently a JaKob Podwinecz, living around 1725 took a name having to do with some geographic connection. Maybe he just walked by the place and liked the name better than what was on the list. The fact there are only Podwinetz near to where there is a place called Podwinetz suggests that this is the case. Peter From: Celia Male <celiamale@yahoo.com>snip>>>>>

#austria-czech
Celia Male <celiamale@...>
Peter Bakos writes in his posting entitled "Mlada
Boleslav Cemetery": The Freiherren von Waldstein owned 20 towns in the area of Mlada Boleslav/Jung Bunzlau], one of which is called Podwinecz but which I cannot find on any map. I am fascinated by the connection [with my PODWINECZ family] but have no idea if there were Jewish people living in that village. The Kreis surrounding the Bunzlauer Kreis are the Bidschover, Leitmeritzer and Kaurzimer Kreis. I have checked the 1793 Jewish census of Bohemia for a village of that name in the four Kreis named above and it is not listed. One has to presume, that in that era at least, there were no Jews living there. This is confirmed by the fact that the village is on the comprehensive list provided by Felix Gundacker on our own website: http://www.jewishgen.org/bohmor/towns/gundframe1.html There is a Bohemian village with a name closely resembling *Podwinecz* in the Leitmeritzer [Litomerice] Kreis mentioned in a commercial website, which because of prevailing Jewishgen rules I cannot list here: Former spelling of the village: Podiwin Current spelling of the village: Podvini Parish attribution: Zitenice Start of Vital Statistics: 1708/1708/1708 Former Parish attribution: Litomerice dek 1626/1626/1637 Former judicial denomination and archives: (Bohemia & Moravia only) Litomerice You can also search the website with "PODW" which brings up a few other choices but they seem less likely. I found an interesting website about the regional archives in Zitenice which can be traced back to an Imperial sanction of inheritance of the trust of Count Vaclav Eusebia of Lobkovic in 1677. These archives will probably contain much information about Schutzherren and Schutzjuden in some of the less-used collections which are stored off the premises of the Zitenice castle. http://www.mvcr.cz/archivy/litomerice/english/zitenice1.htm Frank Eisinger has also submitted our Gemeinde View for Podivin [nr Lundeburg/Breclav] in Moravia: http://www.jewishgen.org/AustriaCzech/towns/podivin.htm As with the villages of Kaunitz and Kanitz I wrote about two days ago, there is a Moravian doppelganger to the Bohemian Podiwin/Podvini village, discussed above.
