new translations from LITA yizkor book #belarus

Joyce Field

Four new translations >from the LITA Yizkor Book, Vol. 1 are now available at
http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/lita/lita.html:

-Alyta (Alytus)
-A Short Visit to Alytus
-Keidan (Keidainiai)
-Palanga

At the above link you will also find an English table of contents for
Volumes 1 and 2, with live links to all articles translated to date.
In addition, there is an index of all personal names and place names
mentioned in both volumes.

LITA is the traditional Yiddish term for "Jewish Lithuania."
Historically it has included not only the present-day country of
Lithuania, but also border areas that are now part of Latvia
(Courland or Kurland) to the northwest and Belarus to the southeast.
An enormous amount of material covering a wide range of geographical
areas and topics remains to be translated. However, we cannot
continue to fund translations without your donations. These can be
made online at
http://www.jewishgen.org/JewishGen-erosity/v_projectslist.asp?project_cat=23,
where you are asked to also make a donation to JewishGen, which
finances the infrastructure to make online translations a reality.

The co-coordinators for the LITA translation project are Max Heffler,
max@texsys.com, and Sonia Kovitz, shiralunacy@sbcglobal.net. They
will be glad to answer any questions you have.

Burials in Israel #general

Israel P

Last Friday's weekly Hebrew newspaper Makor Rishon had an article in the
financial section (page 14) regarding a private, volunteer project to put
burial information online. (The paper itself has an online edition, but
this article doesn't seem to be there.) The project is called kadishanet
and their website is http://www.kadishanet.co.il/

It is all in Hebrew at this time, though they have plans in principle to
put information in foreign languages. The site includes much useful
information about burial procedures and customs, customs of mourning,
cemeteries in Israel and more. The person behind it is Yehoshua Yishai,
who once served as director general of the Tel-Aviv burial society.

(I spoke with him yesterday and he would be interested in cooperation
with JewishGen and JOWBR and I sent him the JOWVR URL. Joyce Field will
be in touch with him - or perhaps has already - so that is not the
purpose of this announcement.)

MODERATOR NOTE: Please send any suggestions for projects JewishGen might

Hello,

You can find information about the research in Smyrna in the Infofile I
wrote some years ago, available on the Jewishgen website.

Several articles about this subject have been published in the review ETSI
(in French and English), devoted to the Sephardic History and Genealogy. You
should get an eye on the website of the society
www.geocities.com/Etsi-Sefarad You will find the list of the surnames and
places researched by our members, as well as the summaries of the previous
issues.

A part of the old records of the Jewish community has been destroyed, but
there are a lot of documents kept in Izmir, Israel or in other countries
(not only >from the Community).

There is not a register of the deaths or the burials, but a work in the
cemeteries has been done some years ago by Prof. Minna Rozen, >from the
Diaspora Institute at this time. Unfortunatly, this work is not available
for consultation.

If you have other precise queries, you can contact me privately.

Sincerely,
Laurence Abensur-Hazan (Mrs)

From: Sam Wolff <baalh@yahoo.com>
Does anybody have any experience in conducting genealogical research in
Smyrna, Turkey? I was informed by a local Jewish person that the old records
were destroyed in a fire in 1900 and that I could search the cemetery but
that would be "time-consuming." Is there not a register of the deceased in
the >cemetery? Any tips would be welcome.
