Yesterday was the anniversary of my father's death. As I live in Los
Angeles and he is buried in Detroit I could not go visit the grave. A friend told me about http://earth.google.com/ At the moment it only works on a PC. I went to the site typed in Detroit, then the cemetery and then zoomed in on the area and could see layout of the stones. Not clear enough to read but clear enough to know that that was the plot. The next best thing to being there in person! Works on individual homes, schools, anything. A fascinating site. Re: Requesting cemetery photographs

Sam Schleman <Samara99@...>
Sounds good. Maybe I lack charitable spirit.
However, I suggest Mr. Griner post a message to this forum stating that he is going to Mt. Zion or Baron Hirsch or Riverside and asking if anyone would like photographs taken. :-) Then see how many requests he gets. I received numerous requests and had to choose which ones to pursue. It was not possible to satisfy all the requests in one day, even if I did nothing else. While I was taking photos for the person who lived 20 minutes away from the cemetery, I wasn't taking photographs for someone else who lived1000 miles away and had no ability to get to the cemetery. If someone can request assistance, they can also state that while living nearby, they are unable to go to the cemetery because "the person is infirm, disabled, or doesn't drive". ----- Original Message ----- I understand Mr. Schleman's feeling about doing someone elses work forFrom: "Zev Griner" <zgriner@yahoo.com> them, *but*, knowing where someone lives doesn't tell the whole story. According to Mr. Schleman, he was already going to the cemetery and made the offer. He was not going out of his way or making an extra trip. Also, how does he know how capable or able the person making the request is? Maybe the person is infirm, disabled, or doesn't drive. Or maybe its just one of those things that the person hasn't gotten around to doing. In short, consider a RAOGK an act of absolute charity, like service to the dead. >>>

Looking for Titner's
#general
Jill Ullmann <ullmannjt@...>
I have tracked my grandfather, Max TITNER, to Hennepin County in
Minnesota. He was born there in 1894. I believe his siblings were Dorothy, Harry, Lou, and Sam. It appears that Lou and Sam were born in Wisconsin. His mother's name was Lottie or Lotta and I believe her maiden name was Rabinowitz or Roberts. Lottie was born in Russia. I do not know her husband's name but he was also born in Russia. The census records show that Lottie was either widowed or divorced. An alternate spelling of the name was TITTNER. If anyone in the MN area can help me go a bit further, it would definitely be appreciated. Please respond off list.

Dear Genners. It's a pitty that there is nobody >from Russia,Poland or UkrainI am also on a Slavic academic list that has quite a few correspondents in the former USSR. I can send a message requesting to post an announcement inviting interested people to join this list. Perhaps our list managers can compose the message with the appropriate links and I will post it. The Jewish communities of Lithuania and of St Petersburg have web sites (I'm sure there are others, but these I know of specifically.) You can get them by googling. They have contact email addresses. Again, an invitation to join this list might bring in some people. Jules Levin Los Angeles MODERATOR NOTE: This list is open to all. Messages can be sent to jewishgen@lyris.jewishgen.org.

Request help with GUMBRICH and HALL in Germany

identifying the birthplaces {and dates} in W. Germany for her gt-gt-grandparents Isaak & Sophie (geb. Maier) GUMBRICH / GUMBRECHT and Sigmund/Selegman & Anna/Chane (geb. Regenstein?) HALL. As far as Lisa knows the GUMBRICH family lived in Rastatt (Baden) by the 1840s, but she does not know if they were born there. The Stadtarchiv in Rastatt states that they have no other records. I have GOMBRICH [fourth cousins] >from Vienna on my family tree and the earliest date I have is a marriage ca 1841 in Offenbach, Germany of an unknown GOMBRICH with another unknown - hence my interest in GUMBRICH which I assume is a variant of GOMBRICH or vice versa. I am not sure of the origin of the name, but I note that there are GUMBRICH in Poland [Poznan & Konin] and also GOMBRICHT and variants is listed as a Polish name: http://www.avotaynu.com/books/sourcebook.htm I have surfed, very selectively, and picked out a few tit-bits of interest which hopefully might be relevant to some [esp. what a wonderful collection of maps! thank you for the reference.

if they are not for sale, you might try printing them yourself on a colour printer. the one that i experimented with, bekes megye, was roughly letter-sized (slightly smaller than 8.5x11"), and the right resolution (175 dpi) to print reasonably well on my black and white laser printer at home. you should be able to print them on a colour printer in a copy shop for about $1 a page or less. ....... tom klein, toronto

I wonder if anyone knows of a reputable researcher based in Budapest (but
not necessarily) who is familiar with Jewish genealogy? I have used only Dr. Aristid Harmath in the past. One of my clients needs a few 20th-century certificates. Can anyone advise me as to whether Hungarian civil records are available only as extracts or also as copies of the original documents? And do Jewish religious records exist - eg. a Jewish wedding in the 1930s? kind regards Krystyna Duszniak Lost Histories 409 Inkerman Street East St Kilda Victoria 3183 Australia ph./fax +613 95072552 losthistories@optusnet.com.au www.losthistories.com Moderator: Please send comments and suggestions off-list.
