Patterns of moving from one town to another #lithuania

Carol Rombro Rider

Tamar Dothan asked for reasons that Jews moved >from area to area. Although
I suspect in many cases it was for economic reasons or reasons of marriage,
there is another reason that just appeared in some research that was done
on my Lithuanian family.

Two brothers in my ROMBRO family were sent out of the uyezed in 1869 by the
DUMA (government) judgement of May 7, 1871. All that is mentioned in the
report is that "they broke the law". This explains why I have found
members of this family who moved to Latvia and Russia proper.

Heaven help those of us trying to track families with the names of Cohen,
Goldberg, Levy, etc. who also were on the move!

Then again, and not to contradict, but, my great-great-grandfather, Shmuel
Halevi HURWITZ of Vievis was the great-great-great-grandson of Shmuel
Halevi HURWITZ of Vievis.... Whether the intervening generations all
lived there is not readily apparent.

And one of my great-great-great-grandfathers, Fishel CHANOCH,also on my
mother's side, moved about Lithuania to a considerable extent in the
service of his business, which was managing large tracts of farmland
owned by himself and his non-Jewish partners, despite the fact that he
was quite wealthy.

So the final answer, if there is one, is that individual circumstances
dictated one's mobility as much as any generalized conditions.

In the postcript to my posting to the Rom-Sig of 10.24.05, I
incorrectly named Patricia Olson as the person who reported on her
Romanian trip. This should have been Desiree Gil's two reports of
September 7. 2005 to Bucharest and Galati.
To both Patricia and Desiree my sincere apologies for the error and any
inconvenience caused thereby.

Minsk 1889 Death Records #belarus

David M. Fox <davefox73@...>

Attention All SIG Members with Roots in Minsk City and Other Shtetls:

I recently obtained, using personal funds, the 1889 Minsk Jewish Death
Register. Each page has been photographed with a digital camera and the
images have been burned to a CD. A copy of the CD was provided to a SIG
volunteer translator who has already started to translate and enter the data
into an Excel spreadsheet that will be added to the Belarus on line
database. The translator has also extracted the surnames that are in the
1889 Minsk death register. There are approximately 900 deaths on this
register. Many of the surnames have multiple death entries, but to save
space, I have deleted those with multiple entries. Our generous volunteer
translator, who shall remain anonymous for now, has asked that people who
see their surnames on this list below, make donations to:
Minsk Gubernia Revision Lists and Metrical Records - Translation and
Indexing, which can be found on the Belarus SIG portion of JewishGenerosity:
http://www.jewishgen.org/JewishGen-erosity/v_projectslist.asp?project_cat=1
While you are on that page, please consider donations to other SIG projects
for which you have an interest and don't forget a donation to the SIG
General Fund as well as the JewishGen General Fund.

For those who are not familiar with what data is captured on a Czarist era
Jewish death register, here are the data elements. It should be noted that
all records do not include every data element.
1. Record Number (records were numbered separately for male and female
deaths)
2. Surname
3. Given Name
4. Patronymic (father's name)
5. Grandfather's Name (only some records)
6. Mother's Given Name (only some records)
7. Mother's Surname (only very few records)
8. Spouse's Given Name (only very few records)
9. Spouse's Surname (only very few records)
10. Spouse's Father's Given Name (only very few records)
11. Community Where Person was Registered (This is very significant for
researchers. It might indicate where a person originally came >from or it
might mean that someone >from another shtetl was visiting Minsk and died
there. >from just the first few records that have been translated, the
following shtetls where people were registered includes: Minsk, Smilovichi,
Kopyl, Gorki (Mogilev), Lyubcha, Vilna, and Slutsk.
12. Cause of Death
13. Age at Death
14. Date of Death
15. Hebrew Date of Death
16. Date Buried
17. Hebrew Date Buried
18. Location (town where buried, on this register all are Minsk)
** We have also added a field for the digital image number for the page
where the entry appears. Hopefully, this image can be linked when the data
is added to the Belarus Country database.

Born in London and Emigrates to New York. Did he need a passport in 1903? #unitedkingdom

Michael Goldsmith <mgoldsmit132@...>

I am hoping that someone can help me with a general inquiry, as I am unfamiliar with British law. My father was born in White Chapel in 1901 as Bermon Yokvedovitz (mother's maiden name was Goldsmid). Were children born in the UK in that era automatically citizens? If so were they required to have passports when they sailed for America with their parents? Although I have no trouble tracing the family in New York after 1910, (and have found them in the 1910 London census under the name Yachnedovitch at 10a Fieldgate Street), I have been unable to find any immigration record in the USA. I am hoping that the UK authorities might have keep records (passports or emigration lists)of departing citizens. If so, are these available online anywhere?

Were children born in the UK in that era automatically citizens? If so were they required to have passports when they sailed for America with their parents? Although I have no trouble tracing the family in New York after 1910, (and have found them in the 1910 London census under the name Yachnedovitch at 10a Fieldgate Street), I have been unable to find any immigration record in the USA. I am hoping that the UK authorities might have keep records (passports or emigration lists)of departing citizens. If so, are these available online anywhere?

Do you recognize? (Photo ID) #general

Flo Elman

Dear Genners,
I have a photo of a young fellow on Viewmate. It is very important that we
learn his identification. Today, he would be quite old, and have roughly
children in their late fifties. He lived in Montreal, Quebec, Canada and may
have moved there about 1939 (*possibly* >from Poland or elsewhere in Eastern
Europe). If you recognize him, and can give me his name or any other
information, please let me know. Responses should be be sent directly to
me - *not* to the List. The file will remain on the JewishGen ViewMate site
for at least 7 days.

The file is up on the ViewMate site -

Privacy on the internet #general

Dorothy Harper <dorothyharper17@...>

I have been reading through my Jewishgen digests and noticed some people
concerned about privacy with our families on the internet.

I have Family Tree Maker, with a Home Page and I am just beginning to put my
"book" on my home page.

I went to google. com and typed in: " Kaplan Dorothy"

The second article was me: (apparently there are other famous Dorothy
Kaplans, not me)

"Kaplan Family Genealogy ForumEzra Kaplan & Fanny Cohen, Russia to Conn. to
Canada - Dorothy Kaplan/Hochberg/Harper 11/02/02. Re: Ezra Kaplan & Fanny
Cohen, Russia to Conn. to Canada ...
genforum.genealogy.com/kaplan/ - 26k - Cached - Similar pages "

I then clicked and got several other Kaplan researchers.

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Kaplan+Dorothy&btnG=Google+Search

I don't know why, but this disturbs me. Obviously my family hasn't been
harrased since I started my genealogy, I am wondering what others think of
this. I have a feeling that if I typed in all my family names I would come
up with my Family Tree.

I remember that years ago I notified Google to delete my home phone number,
when clicked on it gave not only my address but a map on how to get to my
house.

We are all on the internet. This is a fact of life. Should we be
concerned?
