Marrying in-laws #general

ben-ari <yrcdi@...>

There is no Jewish Halachic problem for two sisters/brothers/brother and
sister to marry two other sisters/brothers/brother and sister.

My grandparents did that in the ultra-orthodox community of Jerusalem in the
1920s.

The problem is of one man marrying his late wife's sister.

I am wondering if anyone has some advice that I might not of thought of.
I have been trying to find out what happened to my grandmother. She
abandoned her husband and young children in London around 1944 and no one
has heard >from her since 1954. Even in 1954 no one knew where she was
living, she just showed up a family event and disappeared again. I have
used her maiden and married name to search the GRO records. Have search
death records for people with the same birth date, searched for divorce
and marriage records all to no avail. I have a feeling that she may have
lived common-law and taken he man's name. If anyone has any bright ideas
I would appreciate hearing them.

Re: Ellis Island Wall of Names #ukraine

Joan Rosen <jgrosen@...>

There are several walls, with names listed
alphabetically according to when the contributor sent
the names in. They would have no way of knowing who
is related to whom. Basically there are several
complete *alphabets* arranged chronologically by when
the money was sent in.
I believe, but am not certain, that at Ellis Island
there is a way of determining who paid for which
names. I never tried to do that when I was there.

Baruch Plazcek, Gregor Mendel & Charles Darwin #austria-czech

Celia Male <celiamale@...>

In my posting on {Oct 1 2005} entitled "Architectural plans for the synagogue
in Brunn/Brno, Moravia", I wrote: I was most interested to discover that Baruch
Jakob PLACZEK had carried on a correspondence with Charles Darwin see:
http://tinyurl.com/8va7m

Darwin wrote to Placzek on 15 Sept 1878 asking for his view on evolution and
on 19 Nov 1880, Placzek wrote to Darwin >from Brunn telling him that the
behaviour of pigeons was now different >from that described in Genesis! ........
Whether Placzek had any relationship with Gregor Mendel [1822-1884] in Brunn,
I have yet to discover."

Well, I did not look hard enough, as Ray Minkus >from Chicago [I have his
permission to quote] wrote to me that he was interested in the PLACZEK family
too as Baruch Placzek, the provincial rabbi of Moravia, had officiated at
the Brunn wedding of his gt-grandparents, Jacob FISCHGRUND and Filipine ADLER
on 19 July 1886. Ray writes: I am descended >from the LOEW and KNOPFELMACHER
families and hence The Maharal and later one of the grand rabbis of Moravia
prior to Reb Placzek. Ray then found the missing link I was looking for in
the biography of George [Georg] Placzek who was grandson of Baruch PLACZEK
and his wife Karoline [nee LOW BEER - umlaut on O].

George Placzek was a famous physicist and his interest "in science had been
nurtured in him by his grandfather Baruch Placzek" ........ who was Provincial
Rabbi of Moravia and a close friend of Johann Georg Mendel (1822-84), founder
of genetics, who was an Augustinian abbot in Brno." see:
http://tinyurl.com/b32zs
and you will read that a plaque was unveiled in Brunn/Brno in Sept 2005 in
honour of Georg PLACZEK [born Brunn 26 Sept. 1905 - 9 October 1955 [U.S.];
see also:
http://dumbell.physics.muni.cz/placzek
http://www.cerncourier.com/main/article/45/7/29

For historic photographs see: key in "Placzek"
http://www.aip.org/history/esva/catalog/esva/Placzek_George.html

So here we have three fascinating relationships across the religious and
cultural divides of the 1800s: the Augustinian Friar {Gregor Mendel}, the
learned Moravian provincial rabbi {Baruch Placzek} and one of the leading
English scientists of his day {Charles Darwin}* exchanging views on
inheritance and evolution.

This represented a period of "scientific enlightenment" sadly extinguished
in the following century by two tragic world wars.

I would have loved to be a "fly on the wall" as Baruch Placzek and Gregor
Mendel sat together and discussed their views of evolution and inheritance.

Baruch and Karoline PLACZEK are buried in the Jewish cemetery at Brunn/Brno
in graves 3B,2,1 and 3B,2,2. In this database, Baruch is designated as an
ornithologist, rabbi and the son of Abraham [>from Boskowitz] and his date
of birth is given as 1834 and date of death as 18 Sept 1922. His wife,
Karoline, was born in 1844 and died 22 Sept 1914:
http://tinyurl.com/bd49p

Now we can understand Baruch Placzek's pigeon observations and his letter
to Charles Darwin; Baruch was an ornithologist** and a view of the original
letter is obviously called for. I will have to go to Cambridge to see it.

Footnotes:

* The genealogy of the Darwin family is also fascinating:

** Our Moravian SIG member, David Glasner, is also an ornithologist and
is involved in studying stork migration in Israel. This is the website

August [I have his permission to quote].

Robert John AUMANN is a half-second cousin of mine. His grandfather and my

Our common greatgrandfather, Marcus Israel LANDAU (possibly born FREDKIN)
was born 1837 in Gomel, Mogilev, Russia.

His first wife was Hannah born 1836. She died in 1871.

Their eldest son, John LANDAU, was born in 1853 in a place unknown.. In
about 1870 he migrated to South Africa.

He had a daughter, Miriam LANDAU, born in 1892 in Johnannesburg, South Africa.
They returned to England that same year.
In 1922 she went to Frankfurt to marry Siegmund AUMANN.

I have just spoken to my father who tells me that it [?] covers most of the
