Would it be possible for posters to give sources. If I am talking >from my
own personal knowledge about my family etc then that is valid testimony, but
otherwise if people are merely stating to be what they believe to be the
case it can end up as a never-ending series of exchanges until one person
retires hurt.

I would imagine that at the time all vassalls were the property of a local
lord.

According to
http://www.nationmaster.com/encyclopedia/Jews-in-the-United-Kingdom under
Henry (1100-1135) a royal charter was granted to Joseph, the Chief Rabbi of
London.

It says that special weight was attributed to the evidence of a Jew (=12
Christians).

It also says that Jews had free movement round the kingdom as though they
were the king's property. This is what Yisroel says but sheds a slightly
different light.

No doubt, if you only had the protection of your local lord your life would
be in danger anywhere else. It was as though the Jews had a national
passport.

Of course, when that protection was removed then the whole thing would
collapse.

The 1926/27 Poland and Danzig Business Directory, "Ksiega Adresowa Polski
( wraz z w. m. Gdanskiem ) dla handlu, rzemiosl i rolnictwa," is now freely
available online at the Digital Library of Wielkopolska's site
http://www.wbc.poznan.pl/dlibra/docmetadata?id=11407. This 2626-page
directory is primarily organized by place, then by business type, then by
surname or business name. To facilitate searching, I have applied optical
character recognition (OCR) software to the Digital Library images and
incorporated the result into my Search Engine for Online Historical
Directories at http://www.kalter.org/search.php. When searching, please
keep in mind that OCR is not 100% accurate, so you still might want to
manually search the directory, especially if you are only interested a few
known small towns. To improve your chances of success, I encourage you to
make use of all three available methods of searching. An explanation of how
to access the scanned directory images at the Digital Library site can be
found in the FAQ on the Search Engine site.

If you find this tool to be helpful, please let me know.

Please realize that an initially high response may slow the Search Engine.

There are WASSERKRUGS in Baltimore. Irene (SHAPIRO) and Jerry WASSERKRUG
both recently died. However, in the telephone book there is Morton and Hannah,
whom I don't know. Check _www.verizon.com_ (http://www.verizon.com) .
Somehow it feel like an invasion of privacy to me for an individual to publish
addresses and telephone numbers. Good luck.

I do not know when he died, but since he was 83 at the time, I assume it was

If you will contact me privately I can give you the name of someone that I
used in NJ who only charged for what they found. In my case, it was nothing.
However, it turned out that this person did a lot of work and I was
searching for an incorrect surname.

but don't know for fact that the person died in NJ.

There still *are* synagogues in Exeter, Plymouth and Bristol, although
