I notice that you are researching "Stober" which is a variation of my family
name--having been spelled Stauber, Stouber, Stomber, Stamber, Stambor. They
were >from Zurdock, Hungary--now Surduc, Romania. My father's name was
Yankel ( Jack/Jacob) and his father's name was Heskel. Would appreciate any
information or assistance that might be helpful Thank you

Hi,

This was probably Carei, Romania. It was also known as Nagy
Karoly. There is another town in Hungary called NagyKiraly,
so you may want to consider that as a possibilty.

For more detail, you should go to JewishGen's ShtetlSeeker

My great grandmother, Paulin Widder Krausz, was born in the late 1860s in

Paulin seems to be an usual name for a Jewish woman of that time. I
have read many vital and census records for Hungary and Slovakia and that
name doesn't appear much.

Does anyone have insight into this name? I have her birth record >from
Slovakia, and this is the name that is on it.
This name Paulin for a female was apparently a secular Hungarian given name
used during the 19th century, and was related to the German names
Pauline/Paulina. It was not a common name among Jews (Pauline was used
instead), but has been found in some Hungarian records; I have not myself
seen its use in Slovakia. It is also possible, of course, that the German
name was intended, but a mistake was made during recording.

Nagy Karoly was the Hungarian name for what is now Carei, Romania; has been
known as Carei Mare, Grosskarol, Karalnnstadt and Nagy Karoly. Jewish
population (prewar) was 2,394; 133 km NW of Cluj-Napoca at 47o41';22o28'.
There is a long (2/3 page) article about the town in the Yad VaShem
Encyclopedia of Jewish Life before and During the Holocaut. If you contact
me off-list, I'll fax or mail you the article.

Peter Jassem <pjassem@...>

While I am sure it is not Wohamja, I am pretty sure this is Nehemja, a
Jewish name once used in Poland. If you look closely into the document you
will likely recognize the spelling, unless of course a clerk misspelled it.

I am trying to find any pictures of the following
towns in Galicia (whether old or new):

I am also looking for pictures of the following towns
that are not in Galicia:

Sandomierz (close to Galicia)

and

Biezun

All in the Northern part of Poland.

I am not looking for pictures of individuals. Rather,

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Gesher Galicia Tee Shirt Day #galicia

Shelley K. Pollero

To all Galitzianers who are going to Las Vegas,

Be sure to bring your Gesher Galicia tee shirt to the Las Vegas conference,
if you have one. We will plan to wear them on Wednesday for the SIG Fair
(9 am to 5 pm). We will make a Galicia statement and our presence will be
noticed.

If you do not have a GG tee shirt and would like one, we will have some at
the conference as a thank you for a donation to Gesher Galicia. See me in
LV. I'm traveling Friday July 8 and am staying at the Flamingo. I'll be
around and at the various Galicia related BOFs on Mon. and the SIG meeting
on Tues. Volunteers will also be helping with the shirts.

See you in blue and white on Wednesday. Be sure to stop by the Galicia table
at the SIG Fair. We hope to see you at the Galicia BOF on Mon. and/or the
Galicia SIG meeting on Tues.

Bon voyage.

Poland to France #france

TE <tome1111@...>

Some of my relatives left Poland around 1918 and went to France. I was told
that we had relatives in France who they went to see. They left LeHavre to
the U.S. around 1920.

Recently, I was on the Yad Vashem and looked up the last name, and saw that
there were people with the same last name who were born in Poland around
1864-1899, and were deported >from France (Drancy and Compiegne)to Auschwitz
in 1942.

I'd like to find out if there are any pre/post 1942 French records that I
can access, which will tell me about these people, and who their parents
were??

Thank you,
