My family name was GIBIANSKI and my ancestors came >from Giby- a town in
Giberne Suwalki Poland. However, family legend says that the family
originated >from the town of Gibeon near Jerusalem. ( It is now an Arab
city). There is a tribe of Gibeon that were listed as "wily woodsmen" in
the Bible. My father always said that Gibian meant pine forest. Could there
be any relationship between the two?

Also, there is another Jewish GIBIAN branch in the United States, but this
group came >from the Czech republic. Is it possible that many years ago ( we
have Gibianski names back to 1720 in Poland) they were one family. Would the
family have migrated >from Czech to Poland or the other way around?

Jewish Given Names - Wohamja? #galicia

HJB <hjb@...>

Hi All,

I learned >from my Grandfather's Petition for Naturalization that
his given name was Wohamja and not Hyman as I'd been told. I was
discussing this with a cousin who is an historian and he tells me
that if this name is correct it would be highly unusual as a
Jewish given name. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? I
checked in the JewishGen Given Names database and the indication
I received is that Wohamja would be a female's name. That really
confused me.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Re: A Surname Puzzle #lithuania

Applying Occam's Razor, the simplest explanation is your 3rd suggestion.
Taubeis indeed a given name: http://www.avotaynu.com/books/dagnlist.htm
This isespecially plausible because of the importance given to the given
name "Nochim" in "The Nochim Family Society." I have seen the same confusion
in a tree thatincluded my great-grandfather, Joseph Benjamin/Beynes/Berman
(CHANOCH) BLOOM.The given name "Berman" that appears in some surviving
correspondence had been misinterpreted as his surname. The correspondence
from Lithuania consistentlyreferred to him by both given names, e.g.,
Joseph Beynes, Joseph Berman, etc.

Re: A Surname Puzzle: Sheyna TAUBE vs. Sheyna Taube ROKHALAFSKY #lithuania

Mel Werbach <mel@...>

I received eleven responses to my inquiry concerning
whether Taube was most likely my ancestor's second
given name or her maiden name. All but two (including
those with a lot of experience viewing Jewish names
from that time period and location) believed that
Taube was probably her second given name. Thus,
ROKHALAFSKY (the maiden name stated on her son's death
certificate) was probably accurate.

A hearty thank you everyone who responded.
Your help is most appreciated.

Help translating birth records from German/Polish #poland

Billie Stein <billie@...>

I just received copies of several birth records >from the Przemysl
Archives through the JRI-Poland shopping cart system.

I was able to decipher most of the information, but got stuck on
the occupations. I've posted two viewmate files, for which I'd
appreciate help in translating the handwritten portions.
On the first file, VM6435, the details refer to the father: His
given and surname (Simon Lamm), his occupation ???, and his town:
Sieniawa, and then something which seems to refer to another
record or set of records. What is this? Do these records still
exist, and is there any way I can get hold of them?
The second file, VM6436 refers to the mother: Her name and her
parents names (Liftshe Glanz, daughter of Josef Chaim and Bine
Glanz), his occupation ??? and his town: Sieniawa.

The direct links are:

Sirvintos records -- Good news #lithuania

Tova Jaffe <tovaj@...>

All,

I was just informed that the Sirvintos records are being sent out for
translation. This is great news and hopefully, the results will aid many
people in their family research. But while we have raised enough to start
the translation process, we are $600 short of funds needed to complete the
project. So please contribute! (Don't let the translation process be halted
mid-way.)

Go to http://www.jewishgen.org/Litvak/donor.htm

Write in "Sirvintos" and the amount you can give.

Thank you.

Dear Richard:

On our website at
http://www.shtetlinks.jewishgen.org/bialygen/homepage.htm, click on
Towns and you will find a table that summarizes what we know is
available for towns in the BialyGen area. Apparently there is no data
available for Milejczyce.

In Tomasz Wisniewski's book, "Jewish Bialystok and surroundings in
Eastern Poland," he describes Jewish Milejczyce and provides a list of
Jewish heads of households taken by the Nazis to the death camps.
