Joseph Fibel z"l
#lithuania
Jrbaston
Longtime Lida District researcher Joseph (Joe) Fibel of New Rochelle,
NY passed away Saturday, Sept.8 at age 92. His burial will be on Wednesday at Zion Memorial in Mamaroneck, NY, likely around 1 PM. For more details, please contact Joe's grandson Scott Steinhardt at scott@scottsteinhardt.com. Joe had a wealth of documents pertaining to his family, and many other family trees. His grandson Scott has saved all those documents - paper and digital - and would love to share them. Scott asks us to "please share this information with anyone who knew Joe. I knew he was active in LitvakSIG and the JGS, Inc.(NY) and kept in constant contact with members about finding other families. It was something he loved doing, and he was good at it." Judy Baston, Coordinator, LitvakSIG Lida District Research Group P.S. On a personal note, Joe was most likely the first good friend I made in organized genealogy. He had valuable material about the town of Voronovo, which he shared with me back in 1992. He was my "landsman-in-law' and I will miss him. May his memory be for a blessing.

SANKTIN or SANCTON Relatives
#general
Barbara Sloan <bj1friends@...>
I am researching my grandmother's family. They emigrated to the US
sometime before 1910 >from Brest, Litovsk, Russia. My grandmother was Baila (later Bella), her brother was Simcha or Sam and their father was also Sam. Bella's mother's name was Fannie GROSS. An uncle is David SANKTIN. Early records show the name as SANKTIN and later ones as SANCTON. Family lore suggests that some of the family emigrated to England or the UK rather than the US. I would like to find that branch of the family if possible, but I have no first names. Please write me privately if you believe you are related to this family or know them. Thank you so much. The Iowa Jewish Historical Society is identifying Iowa's Jewish
veterans. The project started in 2011 and currently they have 1,470 men and women who served >from the Civil War to today The names came from cemetery records, records in their archives and informationprovided by veterans themselves and or their families, obituaries, etc. They know that there were more of Iowa's Jewish veterans who are missing >from the list. If you served, or know someone who served in the US military >from Iowa and would like to add your/their name please call 515-987-0899 ext 216 or email ijhs@dmjfed.org. Soon they expect the form to be on their website, but checking at the time of writing this it still is not posted. Note, their website is hosted by the Jewish Federation of Greater Des Moines. Their collection website is: http://ijhs.pastperfectonline.com/. I did not get results when I put in "veterans" to the search field. The IJHS is still inventorying and digitizing its artifact collection and archives. Jan Meisels Allen, Chairperson, IAJGS Public Records Access Monitoring Committee

Re Koma and Sandak
#hungary
judyyoung@...
Just a small additional point on these two words which in the genealogical=
and Jewish traditional context have pretty much the same meaning and use: = both refer to the person who is the "godfather" and/or the person who holds= the baby at the bris, and as our Moderator explained, is usually a relativ= e. Koma is a Hungarian word (though probably with Slavic origin) and in addit= ion to the "godfather" or Sandek meaning, it is often used as a general co= lloquial expression for any relative among Jews and non-Jews alike (and som= etimes even a non-relative but close friend, a bit like "buddy"). Sandak (sandek) is Yiddish / used in Hebrew also - not sure to what degree = it was used in early Hungarian vital stats records but those of you working= with them will know.=20 Judy Young Ottawa =20 Subject: Koma/Sandak-meaning From: gopublic@verizon.net Date: Wed, 5 Sep 2018 13:01:15 -0400 X-Message-Number: 1 Hello - Here is a very basic question.
