research in Israel #general

Martha LEV-ZION <martha@...>

I will be travelling to Israel for a week(18 - 25 September). I am
wanting to do some research regarding my family. Besides going to
Beit Hatfutsoth where else should I go. I am not looking for any
WWII records otherwise I would naturally go to Yad Vashem.
Welcome to Israel when you come, Jeff. The first stop in your
preparation for coming to Israel, or for going to any other place,
for that matter, is to look at the website of the genealogy society
of that place. On www.isragen.org.il, you will find a wealth of
material to aid your research. Make sure you take a look at the
section on Archives on the left hand side bar.

We look forward to welcoming you when you come. You might also check
out on the website which societies of the IGS are having meetings
when you will be here. We would love to see you amongst us!

Have a good trip!

Hi,
I have two sets of questions that I would appreciate some help =
with. The first concerns the reporting and recording of suicides in =
England at the beginning of the 20th century. According to my family's =
oral history, my grandfather MORRIS MILLER's first wife ALLKA committed =
suicide. Allka was alive and was living with Morris in London at the time
=
of the 1901 English census. Also, Morris married my grandmother ESTHER =
BOOK in London in January 1902, so Allka must have committed suicide some
=
time in the middle of 1901. However, I cannot find any record of her =
death in the GRO's Death Indexes for either 1901 or 1902. Were suicides =
excluded >from these records and, if so, is there any other place where =
they might have been recorded?
See this article "Mortality and political climate: how suicide rates have
risen during periods of Conservative government, 1901-2000" (M Shaw, D
Dorling, G Davey Smith)
http://www.shef.ac.uk/sasi/publications/2002/shaw_et_al_mortality_political_climate.pdf

The source for Table 1 Suicide rates per million 1901-1998 England and Wales
by prime minister is given as www.statistics.gov.uk/statbase dataset "Deaths
(per million population) >from injury and poisoning: external cause and year
of registration or occurrence, 1901-1998", which must clearly be based on
such records.

You might contact one of the authors of the article Dr M Shaw
mary.shaw@bristol.ac.uk who I am sure would be able to help you (Dept of
Social Medicine, Univ of Bristol).

You possibly need to contact the Family Records Centre
certificate.services@ons.gsi.gov.uk.

I can imagine that possibly the cause of death might not be accurately
recorded, but I find it difficult to imagine that the death would not be
recorded.

Variant spellings of town names #poland

Avigdor&Laia <lbendov@...>

Henry Schwartz posed a question re: town names in Poland. This is exactly my
complaint that there needs to be a database of Eastern European towns with
variant spellings, coordinates, and Hebrew and/or Yiddish equivalents since
so many of us are trying to pin down towns of interest and get lost in the
poor transliterations which often are not uniform >from yizkorbook to
yizkorbook. The Dutch-Maikoff Soundex is useful, as in the search for
shtetls, but more can be done.

For example, KROCANKA can be Kruszenica or maybe Krosnica?? If we would
also try to at least give a geographic context, say East or West of Warsaw
about so many miles/km. that would help reduce the fuzziness in deciding
which alternative might be "correct".

Bessarabia Duma List Project Completed #general

Terry Lasky <tlasky@...>

The Bessarabia Duma List Project is now completed. Another 55,000+ names have
been added, bringing the total to 128,000 names. The Bessarabia Duma project is a
listing of all men over the age of 24 who were eligible to vote in the 1906 and
1907 Bessarabian Duma Election. The gubernia of Bessarabia includes all of
Moldova and portions of the Ukraine (Black Sea area and the area along the
northern border of Moldova). This database is a part of the JewishGen Romania
Database, which is found at

Many people worked on this project, but I would specifically like to thank Harry
Green, Claire Stuart and Leslie Oberman who were the "superstars" of this effort
and did the majority of the work. I would also like to thank JewishGen for all of
their support and especially Warren Blatt and Michael Tobias.
