Dear Sam,
I just came >from Transcarpathia, that visited for up to date impressions about the archives. I guess there is not problem to get data >from the post 1895 civil vital records -- if you have a bit of luck. The vital record books are preserving by register offices (ZAGS) of the 13 districts. The problem is the accessing to the pre 1895 Jewish records, of course. I had been at some archives in Ungvar, Munkacs and Beregszasz, and nobody of archivists could say me, what kind matters has exactly, and where are the pre 1895 Jewish vital records. For example the 1867-1874 BMD entries of Beregszasz are in the Beregszasz Archives, but the archivist able not to imagine where are the more years of the records. The Beregszasz Archives also has the 1879-1887 entries of some towns of Maramaros, as like Nagybocsko, Lonka, Karacsonyfalva etc. - it can show well the troubled situations. I have known that years ago some matters were moved >from the Beregszasz Archives to Ungvar, but the archivist doesn't have information, what kind of matters exactly. Regarding Ungvar vital records, I went to three different archives to look for, and finally can imagine that the fourth preserves it. I'm sure that will able to access to all Jewish records - and maybe the 1848 Jewish census of Bereg and Ugocsa too -, but need a bit more time and luck for it. Regards, Sandor Bacskai Budapest, Hungary

Towns: VILKA & SZAPINKA Name: BRAUN

Pamela Weisberger <pweisberger@...>
Dear H-Siggers:
I am seaking information on the town of: VILKA, which was once in northeastern Hungary (Transcarpathia) , but is now either in Slovakia or Ukraine. The family associated with this town had the surname BRAUN (Samuel, Miska/Max, Martin and Ettel/Ethel) and emigrated to the States in the early 1900s. Another town name mentioned is: SZAPINKA (sp?) which would have been close to VILKA. If you have a location or current town name, or have information about the BRAUNs (or BROWNS) >from these place, please contact me privately. Where is Kadon, Russia
#general
Tom Smith <tmsmith2@...>
Dear Jewishgen:
The details of my paternal grandfather's background have been somewhat of a mystery to our family. His death certificate >from 1936 in Chicago shows his birthplace as Kadon, Russia. His father's surname is shown on the certificate as Smith and his mother's maiden name as Block. However, when I searched for Kadon, I hit no exact spelling but many sound alikes. Before coming to the USA, family lore has it that he was in South Africa for a few years during and after the Boer War. However, I have not yet been able to find any records of this. He married my grandmother in Chicago, and she was >from Vendzigola near Kovno, Lithuania. Does anyone have a notion as to which place would most likely be referred to in English as Kadon? Also, what would be the best database for online search of this place? Tom Smith Van Nuys, CA USA

Yiddish Translation Request

Janice Sellers <janice@...>
Dear Jewishgenners,
I would appreciate any help in translating some Yiddish written on the back of a photo postcard. A scan of the Yiddish is at: http://publications.seismosoc.org/~janice/RigaYiddish.tiff I do not read Yiddish, so I could easily have this oriented in the wrong direction. If I do, please let me know which way it should be, and I'll repost it. The back of the postcard also has a mark on it that includes "Riga." A picture of the couple shown on the postcard is at: http://publications.seismosoc.org/~janice/RigaCouple.jpg I do not know who either person in the photo is. Please respond privately. Thanks for any help, Janice Sellers Oakland, California Researching: BRAININ, JAFFE, BINDERMAN, MICHELSON

In surfing the Net, I came across my cousin's son's email address. I wrote
to him & received this reply . The following is the interchange .... I wrote: Would you by any chance be the son of [name omitted] If so, I am a first cousin to [your mother], & would like to get in touch with you. (I'm publishing our Family History & would like to discuss it with you.) His totally baffling response was: "Yes. I don't know you. I am not willing to provide further information. Please remove my name >from any email lists or any other form of communication. Please respect my privacy. Thank you." That was it. I followed up with a short note that said: "I was stunned by your curt reply. When you celebrated your barmitzvah, my husband, Harold & I were there, & even dropped by your house to bring your gift. If you "don't know who I am", you can ask your mother when you speak to her. (She & I are on the phone together frequently.) If your mother is my 1st cousin, that makes us 1st cousins once removed. Not a distant relationship at all!! You can check it out below. It represents 29 years of work! I hope you recognize this family. Sincerely, Florence" He actually answered with just one line; no names or signature: "Remove all references to me >from your lists." The information I have about him came >from what was already (his work & email are online in more than 4 pages of Google!!), the only other info are his vital statistics & wife's name. I believe all of this is in the public domain & the genealogist is permitted to use it. What would you do in this situation? I'm publishing *just for immediate family* very shortly & don't like omitting relationships on my trees. Thanks a lot, Florence Elman haflo@shaw.ca
